Abstract

Rice straw is an abundant agricultural by-product commonly used as livestock feed or burned as waste. It contains cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and silica, which can be processed into activated carbon capable of adsorbing impurities and excess oil from the skin. To date, the utilization of rice straw has been limited mainly to compost fertilizer and planting media. Meanwhile, facial cleansing soaps made from natural extracts, eco-friendly ingredients, and affordable materials are increasingly popular. The objective of this study was to produce activated carbon from rice straw and apply it in the formulation of a facial cleansing soap product.This research employed an experimental laboratory approach with a quantitative descriptive method to determine the effectiveness of rice straw–based activated carbon in facial soap formulations. The procedure began with the carbonization of rice straw powder, followed by characterization of the activated carbon through moisture content analysis, ash content test, and FT-IR functional group analysis. The liquid soap was formulated into three variations and evaluated for its quality through organoleptic observation, pH measurement, cleansing ability test, and oil adsorption test.The results showed that activated carbon derived from rice straw had a moisture content of 8.92%, ash content of 7.68%, and exhibited functional groups such as –OH, aliphatic C–H, aromatic C=C, aldehyde C=O, and alcohol C–O based on FT-IR analysis. The facial soap formulations containing rice straw–based activated carbon demonstrated safe pH values—F1 = 5.46, F2 = 6.04, and F3 = 6.8—and exhibited enhanced cleansing and oil-adsorbing properties, with the highest oil adsorption value reaching 86%. These findings indicate that activated carbon from rice straw can be effectively applied in the formulation of facial cleansing soap that is safe and beneficial for skin health.

Abstract

Traditional herbal medicine remains widely consumed by Indonesian communities to maintain health and alleviate various health complaints, including musculoskeletal pain. However, the high demand for herbal remedies for aches and pains is often accompanied by the circulation of products adulterated with medicinal chemical substances, such as paracetamol and mefenamic acid, which are prohibited in traditional herbal medicines. This community service program aimed to improve public knowledge and awareness regarding the presence of medicinal chemical substances in herbal remedies for musculoskeletal pain circulating within the community. The program was implemented using an educative-participatory approach through interactive lectures, group discussions, simple case studies, and question-and-answer sessions. A total of 40 participants were selected through purposive sampling and attended all stages of the program. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test questionnaires, participation observation sheets, and participant satisfaction surveys. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in participants’ knowledge, with the mean score increasing from 57.63 in the pre-test to 86.25 in the post-test, representing an increase of 28.62 points. The proportion of participants categorized as having good knowledge increased from 15.0% to 85.0%, while those in the poor knowledge category decreased from 45.0% to 2.5%. Participant engagement was also high, with 82.5% categorized as active or highly active throughout the program. Satisfaction assessment revealed that more than 95% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the overall implementation of the activity. These findings indicate that the educational intervention was effective in enhancing public understanding of the risks associated with medicinal chemical substances in traditional herbal products and encouraging the selection of safe herbal medicines for consumption.

Abstract

Outpatient services are one of the most widely used health services by the public, but various obstacles still arise in their utilization due to lack of understanding of service flow, administrative requirements, and registration mechanisms. This condition has the potential to hinder public access to effective and efficient health services. This community service activity to improve public understanding outpatient services easily accessible, understandable through educational and mentoring activities. The activity was carried in Lubuk Pakam I and II Villages on May 21–23, 2026, with 15 participants. The method used a participatory-educational approach that included identifying community needs, developing educational media, interactive counseling, mentoring through service flow simulations, evaluation using pre-test and post-test instruments. The educational media used were leaflets, posters, presentation slides, and outpatient service flow simulations. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' knowledge after participating in the mentoring. The average pre-test score of 58.0 increased to 87.0 in the post-test, with an average increase of 29 points. All participants experienced improved scores, indicating that the educational and mentoring methods implemented were effective in increasing public understanding of outpatient care procedures, from administrative requirements and registration mechanisms to the stages of obtaining healthcare services. In addition to increasing knowledge, this activity also encouraged active community participation in understanding and utilizing healthcare services more independently. Therefore, this community service activity has been proven to increase public literacy regarding outpatient care and can be an educational strategy that supports realization accessible, understandable, and community-oriented healthcare services.
