Abstract

Urban river conservation demands not only technical intervention but also strengthened community communication capacity. This community service program aimed to empower the MAT PECI community (Masyarakat Peduli Ciliwung dan Lingkungan Hidup) through digital communication capacity building in support of Ciliwung River conservation in Jakarta. Prior to the program, the community’s Instagram had only 486 followers with 2–3 posts per month and low public engagement, indicating a significant communication capacity gap. Using Participatory Action Research (PAR), activities included digital communication training, social media content mentoring, photography and videography workshops, environmental storytelling, and digital publication strategy development. Pre-test and post-test evaluations showed a significant improvement in participants’ average scores from 51.7 to 85.2 across all dimensions. The program also facilitated formation of an internal media team, a monthly content calendar, and a consistent visual identity, increasing publication frequency to 7–9 posts per month. These findings confirm that community-based digital communication capacity building effectively sustains grassroots environmental conservation movements, aligned with SDGs 6, 11, and 13.

Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial period in human life, characterised by the transition from childhood to adulthood. During this phase, adolescents often encounter various challenges, including those related to sexual behaviour.   The sexual behaviours exhibited by adolescents can carry high risks and negatively impact their reproductive health, such as the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and the possibility of unintended pregnancies. The implementation of this community service programme is conducted through a series of structured stages. These stages include the development of educational media, the delivery of information using animated video media, and mentoring carried out in collaboration with organisations focused on HIV prevention. In this programme, information regarding HIV is conveyed to 22 students who are members of the Student Council (OSIS) at SMK Negeri 2 Tangerang. The process of delivering information is conducted through several steps, beginning with the administration of a pre-test to assess the students' initial knowledge, followed by education presented in the form of animated videos, and concluding with a post-test to evaluate the understanding gained after participating in the programme. The results of this community service programme indicate an increase in the students' knowledge regarding HIV, as well as a change in attitudes related to the transmission of the HIV virus before and after the information was provided.

Abstract

ABSTRACT In his book "Mass Communication Theory", Denis McQuail explains that the emergence of internet technology has brought the spectrum of mass media into a new force of communication, influencing social integration, disintegration, and public enlightenment through information disseminated by mass media. Mass media cannot be separated from its role as a medium for advertising, entertainment, and as a tool for economic and political propaganda to influence public opinion on various issues. The issue of nickel mining activities in the Raja Ampat region in 2025, for example, was reported with different tones by Tempo and Media Indonesia. Tempo, known for its investigative journalism style and founded by liberal-minded figure Goenawan Mohamad, tends to portray the nickel mining issue with a negative sentiment. In contrast, Media Indonesia, owned by Surya Paloh and closely affiliated with the government, tends to frame the issue more positively. These differences in reporting perspectives align with the framework of media and society formation theory (Westley & MacLean, 1957, in McQuail, 2010), which highlights the key determinants of media coverage, such as institutional control, organizational motives, involvement of other social institutions, and the portrayal of reality shaped by each institution’s “media logic.
