Abstract

Soil bearing capacity is a critical parameter in geotechnical engineering that determines the safety, stability, and performance of foundation systems. Accurate evaluation of bearing capacity is essential for selecting appropriate foundation types and preventing excessive settlement or structural failure. This study aims to evaluate the soil bearing capacity in Gunungsitoli City, Indonesia, based on Cone Penetration Test (CPT) results. A quantitative descriptive research approach was employed using in-situ CPT data collected from six representative investigation points. The analysis involved the interpretation of cone tip resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs), friction ratio (Rf), soil stratification, and estimation of allowable bearing capacity through established empirical correlations. The results indicate that cone resistance generally increases with depth, reflecting a transition from soft clay and silty sand near the ground surface to dense sandy deposits at greater depths. The estimated allowable bearing capacity ranges from 320 kPa to 500 kPa, depending on local subsurface conditions. These values suggest that isolated footings are suitable for light to medium-rise structures, whereas raft or pile foundations are recommended for heavier infrastructure. Spatial variations in bearing capacity demonstrate the influence of local geological conditions, emphasizing the necessity of conducting site-specific geotechnical investigations before construction. Overall, the study confirms that the Cone Penetration Test provides a reliable, efficient, and economical method for evaluating soil bearing capacity and supports safer and more cost-effective foundation design for future infrastructure development in Gunungsitoli City.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to implement civil engineering expertise through the preparation of a building floor plan for BNKP Hosiana Church in Gunungsitoli City as a technical document to support the planning and development of worship facilities. The partner's main problem was the absence of a systematically documented floor plan, which hindered renovation planning, building development, and the preparation of technical construction documents. The activity employed a participatory approach consisting of coordination with the partner, field surveys, building measurements, data processing, floor plan preparation using AutoCAD software, validation with the church management, and submission of the final technical document. The results demonstrated that an accurate floor plan reflecting the existing building conditions was successfully produced and validated by the church administrators. The document serves as a reference for future renovation planning, building expansion, construction documentation, and systematic building asset management. In addition to producing a technical drawing, the activity improved the partner's understanding of the importance of technical planning documents in supporting effective, efficient, and sustainable building development. This community service demonstrates that the application of civil engineering knowledge can provide practical solutions to community needs through the provision of high-quality technical planning documents.

Abstract

The construction industry is one of the sectors with the highest occupational accident risks, making the implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) essential for ensuring worker well-being and improving project performance. This study aimed to analyze the effect of OHS implementation on the productivity of construction workers in Nias Regency, Indonesia. A quantitative research approach with a survey design was employed. Data were collected from 120 construction workers selected through purposive sampling from various construction projects in the region. The research instrument consisted of a structured questionnaire measuring OHS implementation, including safety training, personal protective equipment (PPE) utilization, safety supervision, hazard identification, and management commitment, as well as workers' productivity indicators. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, and simple linear regression analysis with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics. The results indicated that OHS implementation in the surveyed projects was generally categorized as good, while workers' productivity was also found to be at a favorable level. Regression analysis revealed that OHS implementation had a significant positive effect on construction workers' productivity (β = 0.673, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the coefficient of determination showed that OHS implementation explained 45.3% of the variation in workers' productivity. These findings demonstrate that effective OHS practices contribute substantially to improving work efficiency, reducing accident-related disruptions, and enhancing overall project performance. Therefore, construction companies should strengthen safety management systems, improve training programs, and ensure consistent compliance with safety regulations to achieve sustainable productivity improvements.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the essential skills that needs to be developed at the elementary school level because it helps students understand, analyze, evaluate, and solve various problems. However, teacher-centered learning processes may limit students' involvement in critical thinking activities. This study aimed to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on the critical thinking skills of elementary school students at SD Negeri 075048 Lasara Siwalubanua. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The research sample consisted of 31 students, including 16 students from class V-A as the experimental group and 15 students from class V-B as the control group. The experimental group received learning through the Problem Based Learning model, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data were collected using a critical thinking skills test administered as a pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality testing, homogeneity testing, an independent sample t-test, and N-Gain analysis. The results showed that the mean pretest score of the experimental group was 56.25 and increased to 82.50 in the posttest, while the control group increased from 55.67 to 70.00. The N-Gain score of the experimental group was 0.60, while that of the control group was 0.32. Both groups were categorized as having moderate improvement, although the experimental group demonstrated a higher increase. The independent sample t-test resulted in a significance value of 0.002 < 0.05, indicating that H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted. Therefore, there was a significant effect of the Problem Based Learning model on students' critical thinking skills. Problem Based Learning can be used as an alternative instructional model to encourage students to actively identify problems, seek information, discuss, provide reasoning, determine solutions, and draw conclusions.

Abstract

Water availability is one of the important factors affecting the growth and productivity of horticultural crops. Improper water management can result in water stress, reduced plant growth, and decreased crop productivity. In this study I wanted to see how [SPECIFIC CROP SPECIES/CULTIVAR] grows and produces when using a drip irrigation system to give the plants water. The research was conducted from May 4 to June 8, 2026, in Tetehosi Afia Village, North Gunungsitoli District, Gunungsitoli City, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. A quantitative descriptive approach was used, with observations focused on plant growth and crop productivity during the cultivation period. Growth parameters included plant height, number of leaves, and number of branches, while productivity was evaluated based on harvest weight and the amount of marketable produce. The results showed that the application of water through the drip irrigation system supported continuous plant growth. Average plant height increased from 18.4 cm in the first week to 51.3 cm in the fifth week, while the average number of leaves increased from 8.2 to 23.5 leaves per plant and the number of branches increased from 2.1 to 7.1 branches per plant. The total harvest reached approximately 24.60 kg from 30 productive plants, with 21.80 kg classified as marketable produce. These findings indicate that controlled water application through a drip irrigation system can support the growth and productivity of horticultural crops by providing water more directly and consistently to the root zone. Drip irrigation therefore has potential as an efficient water management technology for horticultural crop cultivation under local agricultural conditions.
