Abstract

This study presents a comparative analysis of the technical effectiveness and cost efficiency of three ground reinforcement methods—geogrids, soil nailing, and gabion retaining walls—for slope stabilization in highway construction projects. Numerical modeling using geotechnical software was conducted to evaluate the performance of each method based on the increase in the factor of safety (FS) and the degree of slope deformation. The results indicate that soil nailing is the most technically effective method, providing the highest FS increase (up to 1.68) and the best control over deformation. However, it also incurs the highest implementation cost. In contrast, geogrids proved to be the most cost-efficient solution, although with a more moderate FS increase. Meanwhile, gabion retaining walls offer a good compromise between performance and cost. The study concludes that the optimal choice of a ground reinforcement method must be based on a multi-criteria analysis that considers specific geotechnical conditions, safety priorities, and budget availability. The findings of this research are expected to serve as a practical guide for engineers in designing safe, efficient, and sustainable slope stabilization solutions.

Abstract

Soil bearing capacity is a critical parameter in geotechnical engineering that determines the safety, stability, and performance of foundation systems. Accurate evaluation of bearing capacity is essential for selecting appropriate foundation types and preventing excessive settlement or structural failure. This study aims to evaluate the soil bearing capacity in Gunungsitoli City, Indonesia, based on Cone Penetration Test (CPT) results. A quantitative descriptive research approach was employed using in-situ CPT data collected from six representative investigation points. The analysis involved the interpretation of cone tip resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs), friction ratio (Rf), soil stratification, and estimation of allowable bearing capacity through established empirical correlations. The results indicate that cone resistance generally increases with depth, reflecting a transition from soft clay and silty sand near the ground surface to dense sandy deposits at greater depths. The estimated allowable bearing capacity ranges from 320 kPa to 500 kPa, depending on local subsurface conditions. These values suggest that isolated footings are suitable for light to medium-rise structures, whereas raft or pile foundations are recommended for heavier infrastructure. Spatial variations in bearing capacity demonstrate the influence of local geological conditions, emphasizing the necessity of conducting site-specific geotechnical investigations before construction. Overall, the study confirms that the Cone Penetration Test provides a reliable, efficient, and economical method for evaluating soil bearing capacity and supports safer and more cost-effective foundation design for future infrastructure development in Gunungsitoli City.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the soil conditions at the construction site of the BNKP Hosiana Church by conducting cone penetration tests (CPT) as a basis for designing a safe and efficient foundation system. The CPT was performed to obtain cone resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs), and friction ratio (Rf) across various soil depths. The results indicate the presence of three main soil layers: a soft clay layer at depths of 0–2 meters with low bearing capacity, a silt or stiff clay layer at 2–6 meters with moderate bearing capacity, and a dense sand or hard layer below 6 meters characterized by high bearing capacity. Analysis based on the Robertson approach suggests that shallow foundations are not recommended due to the weak surface soil conditions. Deep foundations, such as driven piles or bored piles, are considered the most suitable option to reach the competent hard layer capable of supporting the structural load effectively. Therefore, the cone penetration test proves to be an essential tool for strengthening the planning of the BNKP Hosiana Church building project, particularly in ensuring the long-term safety and structural stability of the facility.

Abstract

Abstract

Infrastructure development plays a crucial role in promoting economic growth and improving community welfare, particularly in island regions such as Nias. However, such development activities also have the potential to generate negative environmental impacts. This study aims to analyze the environmental impacts of infrastructure development in Nias and to identify possible mitigation efforts. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that infrastructure development provides positive impacts, including improved accessibility, regional connectivity, and local economic growth. Nevertheless, negative impacts were also identified, such as soil erosion, water pollution due to sedimentation, air quality degradation, and loss of biodiversity. These impacts occur during both the construction and operational phases. Therefore, the implementation of sustainable development principles is essential through environmental impact assessment (EIA), proper waste management, and strict supervision to minimize adverse effects. This study is expected to serve as a reference for formulating environmentally sustainable infrastructure development policies, especially in island regions.
