Abstract

The development of earthquake-resistant infrastructure in disaster-prone areas requires a holistic and evidence-based approach to risk management. Indonesia, located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, faces a high earthquake risk, making risk management essential in construction projects. This study explores strategies for mitigating risks in earthquake-resistant building projects by reviewing literature and case studies. Key findings highlight the effectiveness of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and adherence to international standards like Eurocode 8 and ASCE 7-16 in minimizing construction risks. BIM enhances project planning and collaboration, while international standards provide robust guidelines for structural design, reducing earthquake impacts. Challenges, such as limited budgets, technical knowledge gaps, and poor coordination among project stakeholders, were identified. These findings emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach to managing construction risks in earthquake-prone regions. Integrating technology, standards, and risk management practices is crucial to ensure structural integrity and occupant safety in earthquake-resistant buildings.

Abstract

The carpentry training program in Mudik Village aims to improve the technical and entrepreneurial skills of the community as part of local economic empowerment efforts. The three-day training program utilizes a combination of theory and practice. The first day focused on theoretical material, including an introduction to wood types, equipment usage, measurement techniques, occupational safety principles, and entrepreneurial fundamentals. The second and third days focused on hands-on practice in making simple products, such as bookshelves, covering the measuring, cutting, assembly, and finishing processes. Evaluation results showed significant skill improvements across all aspects, with the greatest improvement in the ability to use modern tools (+64%). Furthermore, participants demonstrated increased awareness of occupational safety and understanding of product marketing strategies. This training demonstrated that the three-day, integrative approach can improve skills while motivating the community to develop carpentry businesses. Future recommendations include further training, business mentoring, and the formation of village business groups to support the program's sustainability.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of using sea sand as fine aggregate on the compressive strength of concrete. The experimental research involved preparing concrete samples with varying proportions of sea sand, comparing their performance against conventional river sand. Compressive strength tests were conducted on the samples at 14 days, revealing that samples containing river sand exhibited significantly higher compressive strength than those with sea sand. The average compressive strength for concrete with 100% river sand was found to be 18.23 N/mm², while the presence of chlorides in sea sand, despite washing, adversely affected the strength. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference in strength between the control and sea sand mixtures. While sea sand presents an environmentally sustainable alternative, particularly in coastal regions, its use requires careful consideration of chloride content to prevent corrosion of steel reinforcement. This study concludes that sea sand can be a viable option for non-load-bearing or temporary structures, provided that appropriate measures are taken to mitigate potential risks.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the soil conditions at the construction site of the BNKP Hosiana Church by conducting cone penetration tests (CPT) as a basis for designing a safe and efficient foundation system. The CPT was performed to obtain cone resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs), and friction ratio (Rf) across various soil depths. The results indicate the presence of three main soil layers: a soft clay layer at depths of 0–2 meters with low bearing capacity, a silt or stiff clay layer at 2–6 meters with moderate bearing capacity, and a dense sand or hard layer below 6 meters characterized by high bearing capacity. Analysis based on the Robertson approach suggests that shallow foundations are not recommended due to the weak surface soil conditions. Deep foundations, such as driven piles or bored piles, are considered the most suitable option to reach the competent hard layer capable of supporting the structural load effectively. Therefore, the cone penetration test proves to be an essential tool for strengthening the planning of the BNKP Hosiana Church building project, particularly in ensuring the long-term safety and structural stability of the facility.

Abstract

This Community Service Program (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat/PKM) aimed to support school environmental planning through land measurement activities at SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi. The main problem faced by the partner school was the absence of accurate and well-documented land measurement data to serve as a basis for environmental arrangement and infrastructure planning. The implementation method consisted of several stages, including coordination with school stakeholders, technical preparation, direct land measurement in the field, data processing, and the formal handover of measurement results to the school. The program applied a participatory approach by involving school representatives during the measurement process as a form of technical assistance and knowledge transfer. The results showed that the land measurement activities successfully produced systematic and reliable data on land area and spatial division, which can be utilized as a foundation for school environmental management and future infrastructure development. In addition, the activity enhanced the school’s understanding of the importance of spatial data in educational environment planning. Therefore, this community service program provided practical and sustainable benefits for the school and strengthened the role of higher education institutions in supporting the improvement of educational environments.

Abstract

Basic mathematics is one of the main foundations in higher education, especially for students majoring in engineering fields such as civil engineering and mining engineering. Mastery of basic mathematical concepts is an important prerequisite for understanding advanced material in engineering, such as mechanics, structural analysis, numerical modelling, and other engineering calculations. Inaccurate understanding at this early stage has the potential to cause difficulties in solving quantitative and complex engineering problems in the future (Aida, 2021). This study uses a descriptive analytical method with a quantitative approach to describe and analyse the use of basic mathematics in calculating road material requirements and to evaluate its effectiveness. The research population consists of road construction projects in Indonesia in the last five years, with samples taken using purposive sampling from representative projects. The results show that the secondary education backgrounds of new students in the Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering Study Program in Gunungsitoli City are heterogeneous. Students came from various types of schools, namely senior high schools majoring in natural sciences, senior high schools not majoring in natural sciences, and vocational high schools with various expertise programmes. These differences in educational backgrounds had an impact on the variation in students' mastery of basic mathematics at the beginning of their studies. Based on the research results and discussion, it can be concluded that secondary education background plays an important role in determining the level of basic mathematics mastery of new students in the Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering Study Program in Gunungsitoli City. Differences in the types of schools attended, the curricula followed, and the intensity of mathematics learning at the secondary education level cause students to enter university with varying levels of initial mathematics ability.
