Abstract

Foreign language textbooks function not only as instructional media but also as cultural texts that construct specific representations of social life. This study investigates how cultural meanings are embedded in the Guten Appetit! theme of the Netzwerk Neu A1 textbook through the semiotic framework of Charles Sanders Peirce. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzes visual illustrations and textual elements using Peirce’s triadic model of representamen, object, and interpretant, as well as his classification of hypoicons (image, metaphor, and diagram). The results indicated that visual and verbal signs in the Guten Appetit! theme of the Netzwerk Neu A1 textbook represented German dining culture through icons, indexes, and symbols. These signs reflected social values such as politeness, orderliness, and communal interaction, showing that the textbook not only taught language but also conveyed cultural meanings to beginner learners. The findings contributed theoretically by extending the application of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory to the analysis of cultural representation in foreign language textbooks. Practically, the study showed that visual and verbal signs in simple themes such as Guten Appetit! conveyed deeper cultural meanings and could support learners' intercultural understanding in German language learning.

Abstract

Pronunciation is an important aspect of learning a new language because it helps learners speak clearly and communicate effectively. Many students experience difficulties in pronouncing German words because the sound system of their first language differs from that of German. This study aims to analyze the difficulties faced by students in pronouncing German words and to identify the factors that cause these difficulties. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research method. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with students, and pronunciation tests. The collected data were then analyzed to identify common pronunciation errors and the factors that influence students’ ability to pronounce German words accurately. The results show that students experience several challenges in pronouncing German words, particularly sounds that do not exist in their native language. The most common difficulties include pronouncing German consonant clusters, producing umlaut vowels such as ä, ö, and ü, and articulating specific sounds such as ch, r, and z. In addition, factors such as the influence of students’ first language, limited practice opportunities, low speaking confidence, and insufficient exposure to authentic German speech also contribute to these difficulties. Overall, students’ pronunciation difficulties arise from both linguistic and non-linguistic factors. Therefore, teachers should provide more opportunities for pronunciation practice, listening activities, and interactive speaking exercises to help students improve their pronunciation and communicate more effectively in German.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' perceptions of using the Mondly German application as a medium for learning German to support independent learning outside the classroom. The research background stems from the need for innovative learning approaches among Semester VI students in the German Language Education Program at Universitas Negeri Medan, who are accustomed to formal classroom methods, while Mondly German offers interactive features such as conversation exercises, grammar drills, and vocabulary games. Employing a descriptive quantitative method, data were collected via a System Usability Scale (SUS)-based questionnaire from 30 students and analyzed through SUS calculations (stages 1–4) along with validity testing. The results revealed an average SUS score of 79.13 (grade C, excellent category, high acceptability level), with all questionnaire items deemed valid (r > r-table). It is concluded that students hold positive perceptions of Mondly German, suggesting that the application can serve as a supportive medium for German language learning. Theoretically, this finding supports the integration of technology-based learning tools in second language acquisition and contributes to the understanding of student attitudes toward interactive language apps. Practically, educators and curriculum developers can consider incorporating Mondly German as a supplementary resource to enhance independent learning and student engagement.

Abstract

Studies on the construction of masculine identity myths rooted in local tradition within Indonesian cultural product advertisements remain searce. This study aims to analyze the construction of masculine identity myths and the representation of local tradition in the 2021 Sarung Wadimor advertisement using Roland Barthes’ three-level semiotic framework denotation, connotation, and myth. A descriptive qualitative method waz employed through textual observation and documentation of six advertisement scenes as units of analysis. The findings reveal three systematically operating myths: (1) a tradition-based masculinity myth that naturalizes the ideal Indonesian man as one deeply rooted in cultural heritage, (2) a religious masculinity myth that positions spiritual piety as a mandatory public component of Muslim masculine identity, and (3) a social nationalist masculinity myth that interpellates Indonesian men to percerve the choice of local products as a declaration of national pride. These three myths form a coherent ideological system through Barthes’ naturalization mechanism, transforming sarung from a mere textile product into an active medium for constructing masculine identity. This research demonstrates that advertisements not only promote products but also shape society’s perceptions of masculine identity, expanding the study of masculinity in Indonesian advertising by incorporating cultural and religious perspectives

Abstract

Food product advertising in Indonesia operates as a sign system that constructs meaning and ideology in consumers’ minds. This study analyzes denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the advertising poster of Lemonilo Mie Instan Alami Rasa Mie Goreng (Natural Instant Fried Noodles) using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. The poster presents a rich sign system: greenish-yellow noodles unlike conventional instant noodles, fresh ingredient toppings (egg, shrimp, chili, mushrooms, vegetables), four green checkmark-verified claims, and the hashtag #KitaSehatKitaHebat. This product contains a semiotic paradox: an instant noodle claiming naturalness and healthiness. This descriptive qualitative study employs Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis with data from visual observation, documentation, and literature review, analyzed through three stages: denotation, connotation, and myth. Results indicate: (1) denotative level shows literal representation of greenish-yellow noodles with toppings and product claims; (2) connotative level constructs images of naturalness, freshness, and differentiation through visual and verbal elements; (3) mythological level presents a narrative that consuming Lemonilo is an identity act of healthy and achieving individuals. Theoretically, this research enriches semiotic studies of food advertising in Indonesia. Practically, it encourages consumer semiotic literacy and provides insights for producers regarding meaning construction mechanisms in food advertising.

Abstract

This study originated from research on the use of semiotics to compare two well-known brands, which demonstrated that consumer decisions are not solely based on the visible product but also on the meanings constructed through the visual symbols associated with each brand. The analysis of visual elements is particularly intriguing because both brands operate internationally with visual communication strategies that share similarities as well as distinct differences. The focus of this study is on the visual aspect and how it functions as a symbol in the minds of consumers. The objective of this research is to analyze the variations in visual elements on Pepsi and Coca-Cola packaging, as well as to interpret how these two brands shape their image and establish an emotional bond with consumers through visual signs based on Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory of semiotics. By examining the visual differences between the two products, it is possible to explain how visual elements play a role in shaping meaning in the minds of the target market. Pepsi and Coca-Cola were chosen as the subjects of this study because both brands are global leaders in the soft drink industry with significant influence. This study is designed as a qualitative descriptive study using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic analysis approach. Data was collected through documentary methods, including photographs of product packaging available on the market and the official websites of both brands, supplemented by relevant journal literature and academic sources. The data analysis procedure was conducted in stages, including the identification of visual elements, the classification of sign types based on Peirce’s triadic model (Qualisign, Sinsign, Legisign), and the interpretation of meaning within the surrounding social and cultural context. The research findings indicate that Pepsi tends to project a modern, energetic image targeting the younger generation through the use of blue and simple designs. Conversely, Coca-Cola maintains its traditional, emotional, and historically rich identity through the dominance of red and its distinctive, consistent typography. Both brands demonstrate that visual choices are not merely intended to differentiate but also serve as carriers of meaning capable of creating an emotional connection with consumers. Specifically, this study offers practical benefits to professionals in the design and marketing sectors in developing more relevant visual branding strategies. Academically, this research broadens perspectives within the field of semiotics, particularly the application of Peirce’s theory to the analysis of visual signs in brand communication.
