Abstract

The integration of distributed generators (DGs) with flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) can improve the performance of the grid system. In this study, we determine the location and optimal size of one type of DG, based on wind energy, with a shunt-FACTS control device called a static var compensator (SVC). The voltage profile is increase and the power loss reduced due to an improvement in performance from the maximizing load bus system scenario. Newton-Raphson power flow with a wind turbine generator (WTG) and SVC are formulated as a multi-objective problem called MLB system and minimizing system power loss (Ploss) by satisfying various system constraints, namely the loading limits, generation limits, voltage limits, and the small-signal stability. A variant of the genetic algorithm, called the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), is used to solve these conflicting multi-objective optimization problems. Modifications to the IEEE 14-bus standard and practical test system integrated to the WTG and SVC in the PSAT software are used as a test system. The simulation results indicate that the optimal allocation of the WTG and SVC, determined using the proposed technique, results in improved system performance, since all the specified constraints are met.

Abstract

The stability and security improvements of the grid-connected to the wind energy conversion system (WECS) can be made by optimizing the placement of a flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS). This study discusses the optimal placement of one type of WECS, namely the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) with a series and a shunt-FACTS control device called unified power flow controller (UPFC). The DFIG and UPFC connected grid dynamic perfor mance improvement with a maximum load bus system scenario. The optimal placement of DFIG and UPFC on the grid is formulated as a multi - objective problem, namely maximizing load bus system (Max. LBS) while minimizing active power loss (Min. P loss ) by pleasi ng numerous security and stability constraints. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) have been utilized to settle this opposed bi-objective enhancement problem. The validity of the suggested method was examined on a modified IEEE 14-bus and a utilitarian examine system connected to DFIG with UPFC in power system analysis toolbox ( PSAT ) software. The optimal placement of DFIG and UPFC on the grid has increased the system's dynamic performance, with all the specified particular constraints being encountered.

Abstract

In this paper, an approach for end-user-based energy saving and loss reduction technique in residential networks has been proposed. The proposed approach is applied to an Oman case study of community microgrid networks by connecting automatically switched capacitors to improve power factor and analyzed for capacity saving and loss minimization. The proposed approach can reduce the cost of electrical bills in the total community microgrid by minimizing losses and the capacity investment cost saving of all equipments in the transmission and distribution line from the generation to the end user. In addition, this study focuses on the healthy conclusion that average kVA capacity could be saved to an extent of 12.22% and in economic terms, approximately USD 3.68 per hour in the microgrid. This proposed technique can be implemented as a model community project for other similar residential community systems.
