Abstract

The background of this study is the prevalence of the elderly aged 64-75 with hypertension in 2023 is 57.8 percent, and the number of elderly is estimated to reach 29 million of the total number of Indonesians in 2023. Hypertension can endanger the life of the elderly because it causes various serious health complications. Anxiety as one of the factors which aggravate hypertension in elderly, needs to be controlled so that complications do not occur. Deep breathing relaxation and progressive muscle relaxation are non-pharmacological interventions that can be performed to reduce anxiety. The aim of this study was to find out whether the combination of deep breathing relaxation therapy and progressive muscle relaxation can reduce anxiety in elderly with hypertension. The design of this study is a quasi-experimental one group pretest-post-test design, because it measures the anxiety level of the elderly before and after therapy. The respondents consist of 30 elderly people in the Jatiwarna Village area, who were selected by random sampling method. Anxiety data was obtained using the HARS (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale) questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and dependent t-test analysis. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that 93.3 percent of the elderly had mild anxiety before the intervention and became 100 percent after the intervention. The results of the bivariate test using the dependent t-test showed a p-value: 0.00 at a sig. value of 0.05 which indicates the effect of giving both therapies on the reduction of anxiety levels in the elderly with hypertension.

Abstract

Introduction: Stress is identified as one of the modifiable risk factors for diabetes mellitus. High stress levels can trigger an increase in blood sugar levels. There are four approaches to controlling blood sugar levels: pharmacological therapy, nutritional therapy, physical activity, and education on self-management of diabetes, such as implementing autogenic relaxation therapy. Autogenic relaxation is a form of mind-body intervention that originates from within an individual, involving short phrases or sentences that promote a sense of tranquility. The aim of this research is to examine the influence of autogenic relaxation in reducing stress levels in clients with Type II diabetes mellitus. Methods: The research design employed is a quasi-experiment with a group control and pre-post-test. The intervention group received autogenic relaxation sessions lasting 15-20 minutes, six times with a one-day interval between sessions. The control group was observed without any intervention. Results: The results revealed a significant difference between the intervention and control groups for the variables of stress (p-value 0.000) and blood sugar (p-value 0.008). Conclusion: The analysis indicates that autogenic relaxation therapy can effectively reduce stress and blood sugar levels in Type II diabetes mellitus clients. We recommend that healthcare services implement autogenic relaxation therapy programs to assist clients with Type II diabetes mellitus in addressing stress-related issues and managing their blood sugar levels

Abstract

The quality of life related to health can be affected by disease conditions, one of which is hypertension. Hypertension can reduce the quality of life due to the impact of the disease itself as well as the consequences of the treatment carried out. Elderly people who have a poor quality of life can have a negative impact on their physical and mental health. The quality of life of the elderly with hypertension is influenced by various factors, one of which is self-efficacy. Self-efficacy makes an important contribution to understanding the process of behavior change, where high self-efficacy makes individuals feel capable of taking the necessary actions. The study was conducted to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and quality of life in the elderly with hypertension and the characteristics of the elderly, namely age, gender, and family caring for the elderly. This study is an observational analytical study  with a bivariate Chi Square test. The sample in this study amounted to 106 elderly people who were selected using the Purposive Sampling method. Data was collected using questionnaires with instruments. Of the 106 elderly respondents in the Cakung Health Center area who became respondents, the results of the elderly who had high self-efficacy with the results of 65 (61.3%) were elderly, while the elderly who had low self-efficacy obtained results of 41 (38.7%). In addition, the results of the elderly who had a good quality of life were obtained with the results of 59 (55.7%) elderly people, while the elderly who had a poor quality of life with the results of 47 elderly people (44.3%). This study shows a meaningful relationship between self-efficacy and the quality of life of the elderly with hypertension (p=0.006). There is a meaningful relationship between self-efficacy and the quality of life of the elderly with hypertension.

Abstract

The elderly population is particularly vulnerable to various health issues, including sleep disturbances and hypertension. Poor sleep quality can lead to increased blood pressure by stimulating the sympathetic nervous system and elevating stress hormones. This study explored the relationship between sleep quality and blood pressure among elderly women with hypertension. This study uses a quantitative method with an analytical descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling with a sample of 67 elderly women with hypertension. The instruments used were the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire to measure sleep quality and a digital sphygmomanometer to measure blood pressure. The data analysis in this study used the Chi-Square test. Most of the elderly had poor sleep quality as many as 50 elderly (74.6%) and degree II hypertension as many as 44 elderly people (65.7%). The results of statistical tests showed a significant relationship between sleep quality and blood pressure in elderly women with hypertension, as evidenced by obtaining a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05).Poor sleep quality in people with hypertension can lead to memory impairment, cognitive abilities, and decreased health. It is hoped that the role of the family and the community health center will be to carry out monitoring and evaluation and motivate the elderly to control blood pressure and sleep regularly.
