Abstract

In Indonesia, forest and land fires have become an annual occurrence, with devastating effects. Following major fires in 2015, the government implemented policies restricting the use of fire in land preparation. This policy has affected the livelihoods of traditional farmers who still use fire for land clearing. The research aims to analyze the social changes that have occurred among traditional farmers as a result of the policy to ban burning in land preparation, and to assess its impact. The study was undertaken in Pulang Pisau Regency (Central Kalimantan) and Ogan Komering Ilir Regency (South Sumatera). Findings reveal two types of social transformation processes, namely, changes in agricultural commodities and changes in livelihoods. In general, fire policy restrictions in land preparation improved peatland ecosystems, but has had a detrimental impact on some rural communities living around peatlands. To anticipate these effects, the government promoted no-burn land preparation techniques and initiated a new paddy field construction scheme. However, both were less successful due to local resistance for their unsuitability in the local context.

Abstract

Purun is one of the Non-Timber Forest Products that comes from peat swamp forests. This plant grows wild and is used by communities around the forest to make various handicraft products as a side income. This research aims to analyze Purun's prospects as an NTFP to support the economy of communities around peat swamp forests. There are three research locations, namely Petuk Katimpun Village, Kalampangan Village, and Tumbang Nusa Village. The sampling method was purposive sampling, namely people who were purun craftsmen and lived close to the purun growing area. Data analysis uses SWOT analysis. The research results show that the prospect of Purun as a non-timber forest product (NTFP) to support the economy of communities around peat swamp forests in the three research locations is in a strategic position, namely at the cut-off point (0.569; 0.684), precisely in the first quadrant (I). The alternative strategy used is the SO (Strength and opportunities) strategy, namely utilizing Purun NTFPs; creating markets and promotions; increasing Human Resources (HR) through training and forming Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) groups. Based on these results, the policy that is expected is to support the use of Purun NTFPs by the community, by providing counseling, training and outreach so that Purun Purun products can compete with other NTFP products.

Abstract

Abstract

Local wisdom is knowledge and practices passed down by a group that serves as an identity and strategy carried out in meeting the needs of daily life. This research highlights the local wisdom of the Dayak Ngaju people of Buntut Bali village, Katingan, who use traditional farming systems for their livelihoods. This traditional farming system can not only be adapted to local conditions, but more importantly is able to contribute to food security and local ecological sustainability. The research methodology used was descriptive qualitative method with a field approach through observation and in-depth interviews with farmers who are members of the “Pamaran” farmer group. Data collected included crop types, cropping patterns and constraints faced by farmers. The results revealed that the Ngaju-Dayak community's cropping pattern is a polyculture farming system consisting of annual and seasonal crops. There are 15 types of annual plants dominated by durian and banana. While 14 types of annual crops are managed in rotation and intermittently, according to soil conditions and seasons. Simple economic formulas about the income obtained from the application of traditional agriculture show that crop yields cannot be guaranteed to be profitable, because the results are influenced by how many trees bear fruit that are seasonal, such as durian, langsat and rambutan. In traditional farming systems, there are also often wild plants that are used by the community that cannot be planted but are very popular as vegetables, such as: teken parei. Local wisdom in traditional farming systems needs to be maintained for the preservation of local species and increased innovation in the maintenance and improvement of crop products, especially fruits

Abstract

Community forests are one of sustainable development strategies that provides a variety of environmental services, especially to meet subsistence needs and provide community income. The important value of community forests can be seen from the contribution of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) to community's income. Therefore, it is important to conduct studies to create programs for the development of community forests. This research aims to identify various types of NTFPs in the Buntoi Village Community Forest, Central Kalimantan and their economic contribution to community income. This research uses a case study approach by combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected through field observations and interviews with respondents selected purposively. This research found 14 types of NTFPs and a contribution of Rp. 29,247,097/year/respondent or Rp. 2,437,258/respondent/month. The conclusion that can be drawn is that community forests are able to provide a significant contribution to income so they need to be developed further so that they can support increased community welfare.

Abstract

Medicinal plants are one of the essential ecosystem services provided by Indonesia's tropical forests. However, threats such as deforestation, forest degradation, climate change, and overharvesting jeopardize the existence of medicinal plants. This study aims to examine the diversity of medicinal plant species in three village forests in Central Kalimantan. The identification of medicinal plant species, including their local names, growth forms, and the number of individuals, was conducted using observation plots. Analysis was performed by calculating the Species Diversity Index, Species Richness Index, and Species Evenness Index. This research identified 69 species and 650 medicinal plant individuals. The study found that the diversity, species richness, and evenness of medicinal plant types varied across locations. Two villages exhibited medium diversity and richness index values (H’= 2.47 – 2.87; R= 3.82 – 4.48), while only one village was classified as having high values (H’=3.07; R=6.81). The species evenness index in all three locations showed a high category (E=6.69 – 11.54). The medicinal plants utilized by the community were predominantly climbers, herbs, and trees. High diversity of medicinal plant species was found in forest areas protected by customary regulations. This research conclude that di diversity of medicinal plant categorized as medium-high, and there are sign of declining biodiversity. Therefore, conservation program is urgently needed and encourage relevant stakeholders to participate.
