Abstract

The development of digital ecosystems and increasing community participation in community-based organizations have given rise to communication complexities that have the potential to create ambiguity of meaning. In this context, the sensemaking process is crucial for understanding how organizational members construct shared understanding and guide collective action. This study aims to analyze the sensemaking process in organizational communication within community-based organizations in the digital era. The study employed a qualitative approach with an interpretive case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 key informants, four months of participant observation, and analysis of internal communication documents and the organization's social media. The analysis was conducted thematically, referring to the stages of enactment, selection, and retention in sensemaking theory. The results indicate that information ambiguity, particularly that originating from digital communication, is a key trigger for the collective meaning-making process. Sensemaking occurs cyclically, influenced by community value framing, relational dynamics, and the mediation of communication technology. These findings expand the application of sensemaking theory by emphasizing the relational and digital dimensions within community-based organizations. Practically, this study emphasizes the importance of digital communication literacy and dialogic leadership in maintaining organizational cohesion and accountability. Future research is recommended to develop comparative and longitudinal studies to deepen understanding of the dynamics of sensemaking across communities.

Abstract

This study examines the intercultural communication strategies used by the Forum Pembauran Kebangsaan of North Tapanuli Regency in maintaining local-wisdom-based harmony. North Tapanuli is a multicultural region shaped by ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, making intercultural communication important for sustaining social cohesion. This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach involving twelve informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, and were analyzed thematically. The findings indicate two main strategies. First, the Forum Pembauran Kebangsaan internalizes local cultural values, such as Dalihan Na Tolu, ojo adigang adigung adiguna, and dima bumi dipijak disinan langik dijunjuang, as shared ethical references in cross-cultural relations. Second, the forum applies inclusive and adaptive dialogue by involving community, religious, traditional, and government actors. Supporting factors include shared local values, stakeholder involvement, and government support, while obstacles include hoaxes, sensitive ethnicity-religion issues, limited funding, and low youth participation. Practically, the study suggests that local wisdom can serve as a communication basis for strengthening dialogue, preventing social misunderstanding, and guiding more participatory harmony programs in multicultural communities.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the strategy of Badan Kontak Majelis Taklim (BKMT) in promoting women’s participation in socio-religious activities in Padang Lawas Utara Regency. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through three sources: field observation, in-depth interviews with BKMT officials and members, and organizational document review, then analyzed through data condensation, presentation, and conclusion drawing supported by source and method triangulation. The findings focus on women's high participation during activity implementation, with a stable 75–80% attendance rate. Based on SWOT analysis, BKMT's strengths lie in religious awareness and social cohesion. However, involvement in strategic decision-making is still hindered by customary norms, unequal information, and limited regional coverage. BKMT can become an inclusive space if members' roles in decision-making are expanded. Keywords:   SWOT Analysis; Organizational Strategy; Women's Participation.
