Abstract

Speaking anxiety remains a persistent affective challenge in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, particularly when learners are required to participate orally, respond spontaneously, or perform in front of peers. Previous studies have predominantly examined speaking anxiety as a psychological barrier associated with reduced willingness to communicate and limited oral participation. However, less attention has been given to how learners actively negotiate anxiety and develop communicative agency within classroom interaction. This study aims to explore EFL learners’ experiences of speaking anxiety and examine how they negotiate anxiety, construct participation, and develop communicative agency in English-speaking classrooms. A qualitative phenomenological design is proposed to capture learners’ lived experiences. Data are collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, reflective journals, and selected speaking-task recordings. The data are analyzed thematically through iterative coding, categorization, interpretation, and cross-source comparison. The analytical framework focuses on five dimensions: experiences of anxiety, sources of anxiety, patterns of withdrawal and participation, self-regulatory and interpersonal strategies, and the emergence of communicative agency. The study is expected to demonstrate that speaking anxiety should not be conceptualized solely as an individual psychological deficit but as a dynamic experience shaped by linguistic competence, fear of negative evaluation, classroom interaction, teacher practices, peer relationships, and perceived opportunities for participation. The study further conceptualizes communicative agency as an emergent capacity through which learners make strategic decisions to initiate, sustain, modify, or reclaim participation despite experiencing anxiety. The findings are expected to contribute to EFL pedagogy by shifting the pedagogical emphasis from merely reducing anxiety toward creating classroom ecologies that support learner agency, psychological safety, strategic participation, and meaningful English communication.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Islamic legal legitimacy regarding the commodification of sacrificial animal hides within a rural community setting (Village X), driven by limited local processing capacity and the urgency of utilizing sale proceeds for public benefit (mosque funds). Employing a qualitative-sociological approach with field research methods, primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving the qurbani committee, religious leaders, and local residents. Data were analyzed descriptively-analytically by confronting empirical practices with contemporary fiqh muamalah doctrines and Maqashid Shariah. The findings reveal a normative tension: while the majority of scholars (jumhur ulama) strictly prohibit the sale of any sacrificial animal parts based on textual Hadith prohibitions, local practices redirecting the economic value of hides to mosque infrastructure incorporate istihsan and maslahah mursalah principles to prevent waste (tzayyi’). This study recommends reconceptualizing the role of the qurbani committee not as vendor-owners (ba'i), but as proxy managers (wakalah) who administer property utility for collective welfare transparently.

Abstract

The expansion of mini fuel stations (Pom Mini) has improved access to fuel for communities in rural areas where conventional fuel stations are relatively distant. However, the use of measuring devices that are insufficiently calibrated raises concerns regarding measurement accuracy, transactional transparency, and consumer rights. This study examines the practice of fuel transactions at mini fuel stations in Rantau Karya Village and reconstructs the principle of fair measurement from the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh muamalah). Employing a qualitative field research design, data were collected through direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving mini fuel station operators and consumers. The data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation employed to strengthen the credibility of the findings. The findings indicate that mini fuel stations provide substantial economic and practical benefits by facilitating access to fuel for local communities. Nevertheless, variations in measurement accuracy were identified because some measuring devices had not been subjected to systematic calibration, creating discrepancies between the quantity displayed and the quantity received by consumers. From the perspective of fiqh muamalah, the transaction is generally valid when its essential elements and conditions are fulfilled and the parties enter into the contract voluntarily. Nevertheless, inaccurate measurement conflicts with the principles of ‘adl (justice), amanah (trustworthiness), and transparency in commercial transactions and may constitute tadlis when the discrepancy is knowingly concealed or deliberately manipulated by the seller. The study contributes to the development of Islamic commercial jurisprudence by emphasizing measurement accuracy as an integral dimension of transactional justice. Regular calibration, transparent measurement procedures, and effective consumer protection are therefore necessary to ensure that mini fuel transactions comply with both commercial standards and Sharia principles.
