Abstract

Teenage who enter puberty experience very rapid growth so that the need for iron also increases to increase their growth. Teenage girls who menstruate will lose blood every month so they need twice as much iron as during menstruation. The incidence of anemia in adolescent girls in Sambas Regency is quite high. The total number of adolescents in Tekarang Village in 2023 was 1,657 people with 928 of them being adolescent girls. The number of adolescent girls who experienced anemia in the Tekarang Health Center Work Area of Sambas Regency was 473 adolescent girls (51%) out of 928 adolescent girls, so additional food is needed that can increase hemoglobin. The iron in ferns can increase hemoglobin levels in the body and help reduce symptoms of anemia. The shoots or young leaves of this fern are often used as vegetables. Kalimantan people usually boil or saute ferns to be processed. The increase in Hb levels is caused by ferns containing 291.32 mg of iron per 100 mg of ingredients that can prevent anemia.

Abstract

Introduction: The proportion of anemia in pregnant women in Indonesia has increased from 37.1% to 48.9% in 2018. This study aimed to determine the difference in the effectiveness of combining green bean (Vigna radiata) or red bean (Vigna angularis) juice with iron (Fe) tablets on hemoglobin (Hb) levels in pregnant women in Pontianak City, Indonesia. Method: A quasi-experimental study with a two-group pretest-posttest design was conducted on 32 pregnant women in their second trimester, divided into two groups of 16 each. The intervention group received a combination of green bean juice (300 ml/day) and Fe tablets, while the control group received a combination of red bean juice and Fe tablets for 14 days. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests with a 95% confidence level. Results: The results showed a significant difference in the increase of Hb levels between the intervention and control groups (p=0.01). The mean Hb level increased from 10.90 to 11.72 g/dL in the green bean group and from 10.78 to 12.41 g/dL in the red bean group. The combination of red bean juice and Fe tablets showed the highest mean difference in Hb levels (1.63 g/dL). Conclusions: In conclusion, both combinations of green bean or red bean juice with Fe tablets were effective in increasing Hb levels in pregnant women, with the red bean combination showing a higher effectiveness. These findings provide additional information for healthcare professionals in educating about legumes that can help increase blood Hb levels during pregnancy.

Abstract

Background: One of the global targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2030 is to reduce maternal mortality rate (MMR) to below 70/100.000 live births and infant mortality rate (IMR) to 2/1000 live births. One of the factors that complicates childbirth is inadequate contractions, which is influenced by oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone secreted by neurohypophysis that causes uterine contractions during delivery. One of the traditional herbs that can be used to increase contractions is Fatimah grass (Anastatica hierochuntica). A. hierochuntica was used in Arabs, Indonesia, and Malaysia (63,9%) to shorten labor time, breastfeeding, and reduce postpartum hemorrhage by traditional. Purpose: This purpose was to identify the potency of A. hierochuntica as an oxytocin stimulator by invitro and invivo study. Methods: The method used a true experiment with a double-blind randomized controlled trial (RCT) and posttest design with a control group design of four groups (G1-G4). The research subject was 28 pregnant mice. Results: The results of this research were A. hierochuntica has flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, alkaloids, phenolic, tannin, and saponin secondary metabolites. A. hireochuntica have activity to increase the oxytocin hormone levels in pregnant mice (G1 averaged 49.79; G2 averaged 83.38; G3 averaged 91.05; and G4 averaged 101.39 pg/ml), increase the contraction of onset time (G2 averaged 17; G2 averaged 14.71; and G4 averaged 13.57 minutes) and shorten labor time. Conclusion: The use of A. hierochuntica decoction significantly increases levels of the oxytocin and uterine contractions. The use of A. hireochuntica in delivery women as traditional herbs requires monitoring from health workers because of its strong ability to increase contractions, and must be done carefully with health worker recommendation.

Abstract

Childbirth is a natural process that causes severe pain due to uterine contractions. If left uncontrolled, it can lead to prolonged labor and threaten the safety of the mother and fetus. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a combination of warm compresses and deep breathing relaxation on the intensity of labor pain during the active phase of the first stage of labor in mothers giving birth. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest and posttest with control group design. A total of 32 women in active phase I labor at the Karangan Community Health Center were respondents, with 16 in the experimental group receiving warm compress and deep breathing relaxation intervention, and 16 in the control group receiving deep breathing relaxation. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using the Paired T-Test, Wilcoxon, and Mann Whitney tests. The results showed a decrease in average pain intensity of 1.84 in the experimental group, while the control group only experienced a decrease of 1. The statistical test p-value of 0.003 (p < 0.05) showed that the combination of warm compresses and deep breathing relaxation was more effective in reducing pain intensity during active phase I labor compared to deep breathing relaxation alone. This conclusion indicates the significant effectiveness of warm compresses and deep breathing relaxation in reducing labor pain intensity.
