Abstract

Java’s tea plants have efficacy to treat diabetes. Sinensetin is a chemical compound in Java’s tea that acts as diabetes medicine. The experiment objective was to study diversity of agronomy characters and sinensetin content of ex situ collections of Java’s tea from West, Central, and East Java regions. Java’s tea was harvested when population has flowering about 70% and tested sinensetin content on leaf part. The experiment was conducted with a completely randomized block design with 18 accessions and one control (purple flower accession). The result of study showed that there were significant differences in the accumulation of height plant increase while 8 weeks after planting, secondary branches and secondary branches internode number; leaf length, width and area index; average stems and leaf dry weight per 4.41 m2 and sinensetin levels among some accessions. Banyumas 1, Sumbersari and Kraksaan accessions have agronomy and production characters except for sinensetin levels were better than control (Leaf sinensetin levels based on leaf dry weight increased from low to medium but decreased in high category) Based on comparison between accession and leaf dry weight category, purple flower accession has higher sinensetin levels (0.043%) than another accession, but only reaches 43% of Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia minimum standard (There were no significant differences in sinensetin accession production tested either by comparison of accession or accession categories). Abstract

Banda Langik Women Farmers Group (KWT Banda Langik) is an active women-led farming group in Padang City, established based on shared goals, harmony, and a spirit of collaboration in optimizing the use of agricultural resources. The group owns idle land and unused home yards that have not been utilized optimally. Through this community service activity, Monthong durian seedlings were planted to transform inactive land into productive economic assets while also providing the group with knowledge on durian cultivation. This activity was carried out from May to September 2023 using survey, discussion, and demonstration methods for planting Monthong durian on KWT Banda Langik's land. The seedlings were sourced from the Horticultural Plant Seed Center (Balai Benih Induk Tanaman Hortikultura) located on Jalan Pertanian, Lubuk Minturun, Kota Padang with a quality rating of 80%. One hundred twenty seedlings were distributed to the group-5 were planted on the group's shared land. At the same time, the remaining 115 were given to individual members, each receiving 10 seedlings to plant in their home yards or on personal land. Monthong durian is categorized as an early-bearing plant with a relatively short trunk height of 4–5 meters, which offers a significant advantage in harvest time compared to local durian varieties. The cultivation of Monthong durian, as a form of community empowerment, has successfully enhanced the understanding and skills of the KWT members in managing land effectively by planting high-economic-value crops that are also popular among the public.

Abstract

The utilization of sawdust waste in the early stages of mushroom cultivation represents an effort to support environmental conservation. However, challenges arise when the growing media becomes non-productive and remains underutilized. Accumulated baglog waste may serve as a reservoir for spore development, with the potential for airborne dispersion or transfer via workers’ clothing. Such conditions can trigger contamination within inoculation rooms, degrade media quality, and ultimately lead to cultivation failure. In addition, improper disposal practices, such as open dumping or burning, may contribute to environmental pollution and reduced sustainability of mushroom farming systems. Bioconversion technology offers a viable solution by transforming baglog waste into value-added products, including compost. Program components consisted of instructional delivery through an extension session on baglog waste bioconversion and hands-on practice in composting procedures. Practical implementation was supervised by the facilitation team to ensure participants’ comprehension and skill acquisition in processing non-productive baglog waste. The participatory approach enabled active engagement of participants throughout the program. Program implementation demonstrated an improvement in participants’ knowledge and technical competencies, particularly among members of the Limau Manis Sejahtera Women Farmers Group, in converting oyster mushroom baglog waste into compost. Participants successfully understood the composting stages and were able to independently apply the procedures. Baglog waste that was previously discarded or burned was effectively converted into compost, generating added value while simultaneously supporting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.
