Abstract

The Taruko Saiyo Farmer Group is a community-based farmer initiative that comprises and grows based on harmony, warmth, and shared interests in utilizing agricultural resources to collaborate in improving the productivity of agricultural enterprises, especially in increasing rice production. Given the strong desire of the members of the Taruko Saiyo farmer group to tackle the issues arising from climate conditions and feeling the need to be accompanied due to a lack of science and technology knowledge regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation, it is appropriate as a partner to support the desires of these farmers and to provide guidance until they can master the science and technology and become an independent farmer group. The purpose of this project is: 1) To help farmers understand climate information and forecasts to support agricultural activities, particularly for planting season decisions and the right technical cultivation strategies as an effort to increase product quantity, 2) To enhance science and technology knowledge and management skills of farmers in managing agricultural waste as support for farming activities, as well as to form an awareness of climate conditions. This community service activity is carried out from June to September 2024. Some of the agendas in this climate field school program include socialization, training, application of science and technology, mentoring, and evaluation. Based on the evaluation results, around 90% of the partner members felt an increase of about ?80% in understanding, management, science and technology implementation, and production quantity. With ongoing support and active participation from various parties, it is hoped that this program can become a model for sustainable agriculture development.

Abstract

Adlay is a minor cereal plant that has various benefits as a healthy food, one of which is due to its antioxidant content. The use and development of adlay with diverse compounds supporting health are crucial to protect against national food crises and malnutrition. The aim of this research is to obtain information on the production and antioxidant activity of several adlay accessions. This research was conducted from April to August 2023 in Limau Manis, Padang City, West Sumatra, at an altitude of 206 meters above sea level. Six adlay accessions used included PTA-1, KKD-3, PH-4, BTA-2, GT-2, and TJR-2. The experimental design used in this study was a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The results of this study revealed differences in growth, yield components, and overall performance among the tested accessions. Adlay with codes TJR-2, PH-4, and KKD-3 exhibited the tallest plant height, while accessions coded PTA-1 and GT-2 showed the shortest plant height. Meanwhile, for observations on the number of tillers, number of panicles, seed weight per plot, and productivity, the accession coded PH-4 demonstrated the best performance.

Abstract

In terms of paddy cultivation systems, the Taruko Saiyo farmer group currently still uses a conventional rice cultivation system, both from the irrigation system and the planting method. So there are several problems encountered in this farmer group, namely in the production-management aspect and the socio-cultural aspect. The objectives of the implementation of the Community Partnership Program Helping Nagari Build (PKM-MUB) are: 1) Application of AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) technology in order to save the use of irrigation water for Taruko Saiyo farmer groups, 2) Providing assistance for the rice cultivation system of the Jajar Legowo 4: 1 to increase rice production effectively, efficiently and sustainably in the Taruko Saiyo farmer group, and 3) Increasing the level of empowerment of partners from the aspects of production-management and socio-cultural aspects, namely ≥ 75%, and making Taruko Saiyo as an independent farmer group. This community service activity was carried out from July to November 2024. The community service program carried out in the form of socialization, training, and application of technology. In general, partners have understood the technical application of AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) technology in order to save the use of rice field irrigation water, as well as the rice cultivation system of the Jajar Legowo 4 method: 1 as an effort to increase rice production effectively, efficiently and sustainably.

Abstract

Sugar palm seed germination does indicate by the appearance of a tissue that extends like a sponge called apokol which is penetrating the hard seed coat and can occur in several positions in germinated sugar palm seeds. No research reports discuss the relationship between this apokol position and the phenology of sugar palm seed germination. This research aims to study the relationship between apokol position and the growth of sugar palm seedlings and their genetic diversity. The research applies Experiment in Completely Random Design with four treatments, each repeated five times. The four treatments are the apokol position, namely A: Apokol in right-center, B: Apokol in left-center, C: Apokol in left-bottom, and D: Apokol in right-bottom. The results showed that the fastest time for the coleoptile emergence was 40 days after transplanting in the right-center apokol position. Morphologically, there was no significant difference in the sugar palm seedling growth with each apokol position. On the other hand, we found that there were genetic diversities among them revealed by Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers. The palm seeds with the right-center apokol position included the first cluster, and the second cluster consisted of left-center apokol, right- bottom apokol, and left-bottom apokol.

Abstract

The germination process is the key to plant phenology, which significantly influences the success of early plant growth. Some seeds have a dormancy, so the germination process is hampered or does not occur. However, dormancy-breaking treatments in plants have been widely reported, such as breaking the dormancy of sugar palm seeds through physical scarification. This research aims to determine the best scarification position to break the dormancy of sugar palm seeds. This research was carried out at the Seed Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Andalas from July to October 2023. The design was completely randomized with scarification in two position variations, the operculum (A1) and dorsal (A2) points, repeated thrice. The results showed that the position of seed scarification affected the emergence time of cotyledon petioles and coleoptiles, germination capacity, and seed moisture content. Scarification at the operculum point requires a dormancy break of 16 DAP (Days After Planting) compared to 29 DAP for the dorsal. Seed viability was good in seeds sacrificed at the operculum point, with a germination percentage of 81.94%. Keywords: dorsal, operculum, cotyledon petiole
