Abstract

Sawahlunto City was a famous Coal Mining City in West Sumatera dates back from the Dutch colonial period. However, the sharp decline of its mining productivity in 2000 posed a threat to the sustainability of city life. To overcome this problem, the Government changed the direction of the development of once a dominant mining city to become a tourism city, as stated in the city’s vision on the Regional Regulation “Sawahlunto Becomes coal Mining heritage Tourism City by 2020 “. To get world recognition of its potential, the city of Sawahlunto is registered to UNESCO’s world heritage city tentative list in 2015 and continued the process for final heritage list. As part of that process, this research is dealing with how to transform the existing landscape area of the Emmahaven Port coal storage facilities as a part of an important heritage area in Sawahlunto, by applying the Outstanding Universal Value (O.U.V) of the area within its landscape design. The OUV in the form of tangible and intangible values are applied to create the place character of the industrial atmosphere by material selection, creating visual integrity and spatial character by using the Silo and the coal transportation catwalk supporting structures as points of interest, as well as providing facilities to promote cultural and social interaction. Keywords: world heritage list, UNESCO, outstanding universal value, Sawahlunto heritage city, sense of place, place character, landscape design form and space, infill design in heritage context

Abstract

Architects have a significant role in the building industry, starting from the initial plan to detailed construction and even adaptive reuse of the building. However, the safety issues related to building under an earthquake is usually going to the effort of making its integrity; thus, it commonly became the matter of engineer works and the construction process. This paper studies how actually architect plays a more significant part to deal with earthquake disaster in the complete cycles of building. The architect roles in building safety are discussed in every step in the building industry. It is clear enough that the architects are the ones mastering in every precaution related to the mitigation, from macro to micro, from start to finish, and from one to other aspects of the building. Neglecting one of those will only leave the occupants in danger. Keywords: Architect role; Building safety; Earthquake disaster mitigation.

Abstract

The aspect of expression is very important in design ideas, amidst the pressure of programming and procedural thoughts nowadays. The expression is a performance that was born from the deepening of a strong identity that makes us further involvement. Freehand drawing is believed to be an important activity that cannot be separated from an architectural design process. Freehand drawing is proven to be an effort that will increase awareness to produce creative thoughts that remain logical. The natural and organic character of a freehand drawing with its flexibility will be able to express the unique value of each design idea. It is very different when compared to the stereotypical technical line of mechanics. This paper aims to discuss the role of freehand drawing in improving the quality of expression during the design process. The discussion was carried out through a qualitative descriptive analysis based on the experience of carrying out freehand drawing courses and several freehand drawing learning and practices. The topic of the role of freehand drawing in the digital age is very strategic because it reminds us of the importance of the role of balance cognition for the design process in general. Keywords: design; expression; freehand drawing; identity.

Abstract

The safety of building users against earthquakes is not directly caused by earthquakes, but rather by the ability of the people and environment to deal with the shake. The failure of the building is the most causing factor for the casualties and property losses. However, the building structural strength is not the single decisive aspect of building safety but also accompanying by others such as building design and the use of architectural elements. This paper explores the various failures after earthquakes and its relationship with architecture designs as the work of architect in the building process. The discussion is conducted based on the type of the failures, the causing factor of the damages, and how the builders should anticipate it. The results of this study show that the main principles relating to the safety of buildings are closely related to architects who play a significant role in building design starting from the decision of the location, choosing the appropriate building type, designing less vulnerable structure, and avoiding the complexity in building design. Architects are expected to increase the safety of building users by their devoted responsibility for avoiding the unnecessary casualties.

Abstract

Abstract

Research on Islamization of mosque at tomb complex (masjid makam) has not been found much. The aim is to examine the new meaning of Islam to differentiate from Hindu-Buddha in mosque architecture in Sunan Drajat’s tomb and masjid makam. This research used a semiotic analysis about the Islamization on architecture aspects. The conclusion is the continuity of Islamization in rituals is more dominated in the tomb of Sunan Drajat than in masjid makam. Barokah well has connotative meanings as a source of blessings and sustenance. Mustaka has the connotative meaning as a symbolization of one god. The seven terraces symbolize the seven tanazul or the creation of humans to a perfect level. The existence of the Sunan Drajat’s tomb and masjid makam had an impact on the settlements growth and creates a city image that Paciran Lamongan is a pondok pesantren city.

Abstract

The 2006 earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.3 and an epicenter in Potrobayan Hamlet, Bantul, Yogyakarta, caused significant damage to building structures in the area. This highlights the importance of structural integrity in earthquake-prone regions of Indonesia, particularly in Bantul. This study aims to analyze the structural strength of the Rumah Sakit Universitas Islam Indonesia (RS UII) against potential earthquakes over the next 50 years. This aligns with the building lifespan guidelines set by the Minister of Public Works Regulation No. 45 of 2007, which states that buildings should be evaluated and possibly repaired after 50 years. In this study, the author utilized RESIST software to assess the structural integrity of RS UII in the face of future seismic events. The results revealed weaknesses in the building's structure, indicating that it may not withstand the displacement caused by seismic loads. Therefore, structural reinforcement is necessary to enhance the building's resistance to larger earthquakes. Based on these findings, this study provides recommendations for structural improvements to ensure the hospital's earthquake resilience for the next 50 years, thus preventing significant structural damage.

Abstract

The architecture and space in traditional Javanese mosques are synchronized with previous religions and cultures. Islamization takes the form of synchronization, acculturation, syncretism, adaptation and adoption by Traditional Javanese Mosques of animistic beliefs, dynamism, Hindu Buddhism, and Javanese culture. This research is unique because it compares traditional Javanese mosques with Hindu Buddhist buildings in the form of temples. This research aims to examine the synchronization of animism, dynamism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Javanese towards the architecture and space of traditional Javanese mosques in three elements. The first element is spatial systems such as land use and vegetation. The second element is the physical system which includes building form and massing, roof, and gate. The last element is the stylistic system, especially for outdoor ornaments. The research method used compares Hindu Buddhist buildings and artifacts in Indonesia and traditional Javanese mosques. The conclusions are there are a synchronization of spatial elements in vegetation, synchronizations of physical elements in roofs and gates, and synchronizations of stylistic elements in the gate ornaments synchronized from Kala to floral motifs. Keywords: islamization; mosque; space; vernacular architecture
