Abstract

Effective evacuation routes are crucial in educational buildings, particularly in earthquake-prone regions, to ensure the safety of occupants during emergencies. One of the most significant issues identified in such contexts is the potential for bottlenecks during evacuation. These bottlenecks often result from confusion caused by unclear signage, poor distribution of exits, and high occupant density during peak academic hours. This study evaluated the effectiveness of evacuation routes in the Faculty of Islamic Studies (FIAI) of the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), Sleman, through an evaluative approach that combines direct field observation and agent-based evacuation simulation using Pathfinder software. Observations were conducted to assess corridor widths, signage placement, and physical obstructions, while the simulation examined pedestrian movement, evacuation times, and congestion points under high-density scenarios. The evaluation was also benchmarked against the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 03-1746-2000) and NFPA 101: Life Safety Code for evacuation planning as part of the methodological framework. The findings indicate that only the building’s structural components comply with the expected standards, while several supporting facilities—such as signage visibility, exit distribution, and circulation flow—require significant improvements. Enhancing these aspects is essential to improve overall evacuation performance and ensure safety in academic environments.

Abstract

Abstract

Communal space is a space intended to accommodate diverse activities while still referring to aspects of safety and comfort. Communal spaces in campus areas often do not meet the needs of their users and do not consider behavioral architecture in the design process. West Java province is one of the provinces with the largest number of students in Indonesia, and most of its students are of Sundanese ethnicity. The purpose of this study is to analyze the appropriate needs of communal space based on Sundanese behavioral architecture. The research method used is a quantitative descriptive method with data collection techniques in the form of questionnaires. The results show that Sundanese cultural values, habits, and behaviors can influence an individual’s perception within communal spaces. The quality of communal space is highly determined by the extent to which the space aligns with the behavioral needs of its users.

Abstract

This research analyzes and explores theories from various references regarding the design of gender spaces in mosques based on Islam's primary schools of thought. The literature review method in this research uses the Publish or Perish and Google Scholar with the keyword "gender in mosque". From the results of reference screening, 16 journals were found with topic classification based on timeline, school of thought and architectural objects. The results based on the timeline have stable graphs each year, while the religious stream and architectural objects are less stable because of their unavailability. Based on gender space architectural objects was found in 6 papers and only in the Syafi'i and Hanafi schools. Meanwhile, no references were found in the Maliki and Hambali schools. The Syafi'i School of Religion pays more attention to women in worship matters. However, not all apply the same principles because local community customs and customs hamper their application. Meanwhile, in the Hanafi School, gender space arrangements are more varied due to the influence of local culture, politics, and religious modernism.

Abstract

Fire safety is a major concern in public buildings, especially in educational institutions with high user density and complex layouts. The Main Library of Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) must be prepared to handle emergencies through well-planned evacuation routes. This study analyzes the existing evacuation system and fire safety conditions in the library. Using Pathfinder simulation software, the research models pedestrian behavior during evacuation to assess time efficiency, congestion points, and overall route effectiveness. Key factors include exit accessibility, user familiarity, crowd density, and pathway dimensions. The simulation reveals issues such as limited stairwell capacity, poorsignage visibility, and inadequate alternative routes. This study recommends improving exit width, repositioning emergency signs, and conducting regular evacuation drills. These interventions aim to enhance evacuation safety and align with national fire safety standards, contributing to a safer and more resilient academic environment.
