Abstract

The conversion of livestock waste into organic fertilizer represents a key strategy for implementing circular economy principles in rural areas by simultaneously mitigating the risk of environmental pollution and promoting the self-reliance of farmers and livestock producers. This community engagement program aimed to enhance the knowledge and technical skills of youth and students in Sandubaya Village, West Lombok Regency, in processing cattle and goat manure into compost. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach consisting of several stages, including focus group discussions (FGDs), outreach and educational activities, and hands-on training in compost production using bioactivators, namely EM4 and molasses. The main materials used consisted of 50 kg of cattle manure, 25 kg of goat manure, 20 kg of rice husks as a carbon-rich material, 1 L of molasses, and 100 mL of EM4 as a microbial bioactivator. The quality of the resulting compost was evaluated based on its physical characteristics. The results showed that the compost achieved complete fermentation within 14 days, as indicated by its dark brown to blackish color, characteristic earthy odor, and crumbly texture. This community engagement program demonstrates that the utilization of locally available livestock waste through an integrated bioactivator-based composting approach is an efficient strategy for supporting the regeneration of young farmer-technopreneurs and enhancing the sustainability of rural agroecosystems in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Indonesia.
