Abstract

The impact of globalization on higher education, understood as the increasing interconnectedness of academic systems, student mobility, and the circulation of knowledge across borders, has shaped students’ experiences of Studying Abroad (henceforth SA) and influenced their identity formation. This study explores the aspirations and challenges of the alumni of the student mobility program held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA) called MORA Overseas Student Mobility Awards (MOSMA), focusing on how they navigate identity in diverse cultural and linguistic settings throughout their SA journeys. Utilizing a narrative inquiry approach with a qualitative orientation, the research draws on Darvin and Norton’s model of language, identity, and investment. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four Indonesian SA students from three Islamic universities in East Java, ensuring representation of diverse perspectives. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify their aspirations, struggles, and identity negotiations. Results indicate that SA supports the acquisition of cultural, social, and linguistic capital but requires negotiation of identities when facing insecurities related to language use and integration into foreign cultures. The interplay between language learning and identity formation is complex, often shaped by unequal power relations in these contexts. Upon return, the students also participated in additional identity negotiations as they reconciled the SA-transformed self with pre-SA roles, synthesizing global experiences not consistently valued in home settings.

Abstract

Publications on gender and spirituality have been prominently featured in many journals indexed by various databases. This article employs bibliometric analysis to investigate publication trends on gender and spiritual issues in literary studies within the Scopus database. This research utilized the VOSviewer application to analyze keyword co-authorship, co-occurrence, and citations. The bibliographic data for this study were downloaded from the Scopus database on January 8, 2024, with a search restriction over the last ten years between 2014 and 2023, and under two fields: 1) social sciences and 2) arts and humanities. The results show that of the 34 eligible publications, there are four main highlights. First, the co-authorship of research publications is relatively low and is only undertaken by a few researchers. Second, the co-occurrence of keywords reveals three main research trends over these ten years: gender-based experiences and practices, gender-based concepts, and religion and spirituality. However, keywords related to literary criticism did not appear. Third, the number of citations for documents is uneven and is dominated only by certain authors, affiliations, and countries. Lastly, network visualization reveals limited interconnectivity between topics, such as gender spirituality and literature. These results conclude that interdisciplinary research in the field of literary criticism remains widely open to address existing research gaps and encourage researchers to collaborate on related topics.

Abstract

Mobile-assisted language learning is a language learning method that includes teaching and practising mobile phones. This study aimed to study students' vocabulary and mastery by using Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Research has been conducted in class VII A at MTs Hidayatush Shibyan Tuban to decide whether mobile-assisted language learning has been successful. A pre-experimental methodology was used by the researcher to analyze the data using the t-test statistical formula. The results of this study are 70,9091 as pre-test and 91,3636 as post-test results. Researchers have found that students who learn to use smartphone supported Language Learning (MALL) help and master vocabulary. It can be concluded that the use of mobile-assisted language learning has extended the vocabulary of students.

Abstract

This study examines research trends on promoting mental health literacy in children’s literature throughbibliometric analysis. With growing recognition of children’s mental health as a critical issue, literature has emerged as a valuable tool to foster emotional resilience and well-being. This study aims to identify emerging themes and shifts in focus, ensuring future studies address the most pressing mental health concerns in children’s literature. Additionally, mapping these trends highlights under-researched areas, guiding targeted investigations to strengthen evidence-based interventions and support for children. This study employed data from Scopus and found seven eligible publications between 2015 and 2024. To comprehensively analyze the collected data, VOSviewer is applied to capture co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrences, and thematic clusters. The results highlight a rise in publications during the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting increased global attention to mental health. The United States leads research output, followed by China and the United Kingdom, though cross-institutional collaborations remain limited. Prominent themes include resilience, emotional intelligence, and the impact of bullying, with emerging topics like digital interventions and bibliotherapy. However, areas such as the experiences of foster children and those facing cyberbullying are underexplored. The study underscores the need for interdisciplinary approaches and international partnerships to address these gaps. Fragmented research themes highlight the importance of broader integration. By promoting emotional literacy and resilience, children’s literature holds significant potential to support mental health initiatives, offering valuable insights for future research and practical applications.

Abstract

Ulama plays various roles in the society, including as a social, economic, or cultural broker. However, when it comes to politics, ulama is sometimes only viewed as a magnet to attract electoral votes. This paper examined the representation of ulama in the media upon the nomination of KH. Ma’ruf Amin as Jokowi’s VP and aimed to shed a light on the extent such a representation could lead to the ulama’s image shift, by taking al-Mawardi’s concept of leadership into account. Considering the nature of the data, this study employed a descriptive-qualitative paradigm which attempts to produce descriptive information. The data; news texts were taken from four online media were collected through intensive reading and note-taking, while for social cognition purpose, the data were taken from student press activists and collected through a semi-structured interview. The results show that all the media under investigation employed a positive presentation upon KH. Ma’ruf Amin’s nomination by using various discursive strategies, such as presenting religious as well as political career background (authority), showing the burdens that imply a negative representation of others, and incorporating the numerical data to intensify the positive image being framed. Therefore, through those discursive vehicles, KH. Ma’ruf Amin’s image of leadership is solely projected in two qualities: religious authority and ability to manage public affairs.
