Abstract

This article presents the result of a pilot project which seeks to examine the pattern of socio-cultural interaction between the Chinese people and other ethnic groups in the multicultural City of Medan, North Sumatra. The purpose of this article is to examine various obstacles in the pattern of socio-cultural interaction among those two groups of people. This article utilizes both field data and the data obtained from bibliographical references. This qualitative research applies the ethnographical approach and is conducted by observing various activities and behaviors that arise from the pattern of socio-cultural interaction between the Chinese people and other ethnic groups in Medan. From this project, we draw a preliminary conclusion that the Medanese Chinese have established domination over numerous areas of life in Medan by engaging in various socio-cultural activities, both conspicuously and inconspicuously. Such hegemonic tendencies have contributed to creating a negative perception of the Medanese Chinese among other members of the plural society in Medan. In addition to that, the difficulty of Medanese Chinese to assimilate themselves with the local populace only increases the social gap between them and other local communities. These factors constitute challenges for the Medanese Chinese to interact with people from other ethnic groups.

Abstract

Fermented Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a processed oil where the manufacturing process uses baker's yeast, is easy to make and has simple equipment. The high content of lauric acid and vitamin E is beneficial for skin health, so it is often used as a raw material for making soap. One way to improve the function of VCO is the fortification process with dragon fruit which contains high antioxidants. This activity aims to increase community entrepreneurial interest by utilizing local potential into health and beauty products so that it can improve the family economy. Coconut and dragon fruit are the main raw materials for VCO and VCO soap which are easy to find in Sabila Village, Mallawa District, Maros Regency. Community service activities (PKM) begin with counseling/lectures on sterilization techniques, packaging methods and online product marketing. Followed by training on how to make VCO by fermentation and VCO soap with fortified dragon fruit extract. The results of the activity showed the enthusiasm of the participants during the discussion and the results of the pre- and post-test evaluation showed an increase in participants' knowledge about VCO and VCO soap by 78.0% after the training.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is coconut oil made without heating or adding any ingredients so that the antioxidant components are not damaged, so it is often called pure oil or virgin oil. VCO contains high lauric acid and in the body will be converted into monolaurin, a monoglyceride compound that can increase the human body's resistance to disease and accelerate the healing process. VCO can be made in various ways and one of them is by fermentation using baker's yeast. This method is easy to make and VCO can also be made into VCO soap. This activity aims to increase knowledge of the efficacy of VCO and VCO soap for health and community entrepreneurial interest so that it can improve the family economy in Pallantikang Village, Maros Baru Subdistrict, Maros Regency. The activity stages were preceded by a location survey and laboratory-scale VCO production. The implementation of activities in the form of counseling / lectures related to the efficacy of VCO for health, how to package products and online product marketing followed by training and practice of making VCO by fermentation and ending with discussion. During the activity the participants showed high enthusiasm in practice and discussion, this was in line with the increase in their knowledge of fermented VCO to 60% and felt that their knowledge of how to make VCO and VCO soap had increased. This activity is expected to increase entrepreneurial interest so that it can improve the family economy by utilizing local potential. Abstract

The carbonoclastic fungi known as a fungi that can produce calcium carbonate crystals (CaCO3) through the urease enzyme produced to hydrolysis of urea contained in the substrate or growth medium. The presence of carbonoclastic fungi is frequently observed in the karst areas cave wall painting, which are a type of ancient artifact. The destruction to the ancient cave artwork is brought on by the fungus. The purpose of this study was to obtain and determine the types of carbonoclastic fungi that cause damage to cave wall paintings in the Maros-Pangkep karst area. Isolation and selection of carbonoclastic fungi were carried out using Christensen Urea Agar medium. The CaCO3 precipitate potential test was carried out by calculating the mass CaCO3 precipitates formed and analysis of ammonia levels and cell biomass produced during the growth period. Fungi identification was performed using the 18S rRNA gene molecular markers. Twenty four fungi isolates obtained from swab samples in Parewe and Bulu Sipong caves, 7 positive isolated belonged to carbonoclastic fungi. The results of CaCO3 precipitates, namely isolate Ps3 producing precipitates of 80,30 mg with ammonia content value of 701,7064 ppm and cell biomass of 333,80 mg. The identification results showed that Ps3 isolate belongs to Aspergillus sp. strain BW1.
