Abstract

The advancement of the digital economy has transformed productivity patterns and created opportunities to support sustainable development, with Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP) serving as a key indicator that incorporates resource efficiency and environmental considerations. This study aims to examine the effect of the digital economy on GTFP. This study used a multi-year panel dataset, where GTFP is measured through the Malmquist–Luenberger Productivity Index with a Slack-Based Measurement Data Envelopment Analysis (SBM-DEA) approach, and the impact of the digital economy is analyzed using a Two-Way Fixed Effect regression model. The findings show that the digital economy has a significant positive effect on GTFP, with stronger impacts in more developed regions. These results indicate that digital economic development can enhance green productivity by improving human capital and supporting environmentally oriented economic activities. Therefore, policies that integrate digital transformation, human development, and environmental regulation are essential to maximize sustainable productivity and strengthen progress toward long-term sustainable development goals.

Abstract

Tourism sector is one of the key sectors in the national economy. This study aims to analyze the impact of amenities and accessibility on domestic tourism demand in Indonesia using the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) with panel data. The results show that the number of hotels and road quality have a positive and significant effect on the number of domestic tourist trips, while airport and port infrastructure do not significantly influence tourism demand. Additionally, per capita income is identified as a major determinant of domestic travel decisions. It implies that the government should increase in the provision of road infrastructure and support the growth of the hotel sector to stimulate domestic tourism. Tourism industry’s stakeholders should also optimize land-based travel promotions and provide more accommodation options suitable for various tourist segments.

Abstract

Based on the relevant theory, it is clear that the effect of government expenditure on local economic growth depends not only on government size but also on its timeliness. Slow and back-loaded expenditure will reduce its impact on the economy. Through the dynamic panel data methods, this study comprehensively measures the effect of local spending behavior in the form of year-end spending spikes on local economic growth in Indonesia. This study uses a new database that covers 462 districts/cities in Indonesia, from 2016 to 2019. According to the estimation findings, an increase in year-end spending spikes by one percentage point would reduce real GRDP growth by 0.0590 percentage points and is statistically significant at 5%.

Abstract

Research Originality: This research introduces a novel empirical estimate of potential customs duty revenue from digitally transmitted imports in Indonesia, addressing a gap in digital trade policy research that has been largely filled by conceptual and legal analyses. Research Objectives: This study aims to operationalize digitally transmitted imports using Harmonized System (HS) codes across five subsectors registered in the Indonesian HS: (1)films/movies, (2)printed matter-books, (3)sound & media, (4)software, and (5)video games. Research Methods: This study constructs a panel dataset covering the period 2018–2023, using data from the Ministry of Finance and Central Bureau of Statistics. The analysis employs a two-way fixed-effects panel econometric regression model to control for unobserved heterogeneity across subsectors and over time. Empirical Results: The results indicate a positive relationship between import volume and state revenue from import duties, suggesting that higher import volumes directly contribute to increased fiscal receipts, strengthening the role of import duties. Implications: These findings highlight the growing fiscal relevance of digitally transmitted trade and suggest that the government should accelerate investment in digital infrastructure and strengthen cyber oversight to support sustainable growth in digital trade. Abstract

Poverty has been a global concern until recently. In Indonesia, the poverty rate will reach 9.57 per cent in 2023 or at least 26 million people below the poverty line. A phenomenon occurs in poor communities in Indonesia where half of the households spend money on cigarettes. Cigarette consumption burdens households through consumption costs as well as health costs and reduced household productivity, which can affect the welfare of smoker households. Conversely, environmental factors, especially in poor communities, also influence cigarette consumption habits. This study aims to examine the relationship between cigarette consumption and poverty. For this reason, the instrumental variable method is used to avoid endogeneity bias due to reverse causality when analysing the relationship between cigarette consumption and poverty. Cigarette price is used as the instrument variable. The data used in the study is pooled cross section data from the National Socio-Economic Survey from 2014 to 2021. The results of the analysis show a significant negative relationship of cigarette prices to household cigarette consumption and cigarette consumption increases the probability of households being poor.

Abstract

The Visa Exemption Policy is a strategic measure aimed at increasing international tourist arrivals and fostering economic growth. This study examines the impact of the visa exemption policy on international tourist arrivals and local craft trade by utilizing panel data from 34 provinces in Indonesia over the period 2013–2023. The analysis employs a fixed effects model initially and an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) approach with year-fixed effects subsequently. The regression results indicate that, on average, granting visa exemptions to an additional country leads to a 0.4% increase in international tourist arrivals. In the second model, a 1% increase in the number of international tourists contributes to a 0.492% rise in the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of the local craft sector. The Sobel test further confirms that international tourist arrivals significantly mediate the relationship between the Visa Exemption Policy and local craft trade, with a z-value of 5.36. These findings suggest that the Visa Exemption Policy has a significant positive impact on local craft trade in Indonesia, albeit indirectly, through the mediation of increased international tourist arrivals.
