Gender discrimination remains a contentious issue in Indonesian society. A misunderstanding of gender equality is one of the main causes. The utilization of local wisdom as an effort to provide understanding and uphold gender equality is one effective option. This research aims to explore gender equality in one of the local wisdoms of the Sikka Krowe ethnic, specifically in the customary marriage rituals. This research is a type of qualitative study utilizing an ethnographic approach. Data collection in this research utilizes interview and documentation techniques. The results of this research show that the traditional marriage rituals of the Sikka Krowe ethnic uphold gender equality in community life. Men and women in their roles as husband and wife in a household have complementary roles. The attitude of mutual respect is also emphasized in the customary expressions within the belis ritual. Thus, the ritual is very worthy of being preserved by the Sikka Krowe ethnic from one generation to the next.

Abstract

Indonesia's local cultural heritage faces significant challenges amidst the accelerating forces of globalization, which increasingly undermine traditional values, particularly among younger generations vulnerable to foreign cultural influences. In an effort to safeguard this heritage, the Indonesian government has introduced policies mandating the use of traditional attire within educational institutions as a strategy for cultural preservation. This study investigates the implementation of such a regulation at Yapenthom 1 Junior High School, focusing on students’ perceptions and its broader impact on the school’s cultural environment. Employing a qualitative research design, data were gathered through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with students, as well as in-depth interviews with teachers and school leadership. The findings indicate that students generally perceive the traditional dress policy as an effort to maintain cultural identity and promote respect for cultural diversity. However, a segment of students expressed concerns over the policy’s perceived constraints on personal expression. The regulation is seen to positively influence character education by instilling values of discipline and responsibility, while also enhancing the effectiveness of the BelaSikka program. This study offers valuable empirical insights for policymakers seeking to design culturally responsive educational strategies that balance heritage preservation with the evolving needs of a diverse student population.

Abstract

Semiotics in traditional architecture is a symbolic language that conveys meaning through specific forms. These symbols are central to communicating meaning, allowing traditional buildings to reflect cultural values beyond their physical appearance. This study explores the semiotic meanings embedded in lepo, the traditional houses of the Hewokloang community. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews with indigenous stakeholders and direct observations at the study site. The findings reveal four main types of lepo in Hewokloang Village: Lepo Kirek, Lepo Hobat, Lepo Tana, and Lepo Musidole. Each lepo contains distinct symbolic elements expressed through its form, structure, and decorative details. These features are not merely aesthetic but are deeply rooted in the community's cultural values. Lepo Musidole features a carved figure of a man on its door leaf, symbolizing the individual who built the house. An umbrella-shaped roof ridge distinguishes Lepo Hobat, symbolizing its role as a place to prepare ceremonial materials. Meanwhile, Lepo Tana, constructed higher than the others, represents strength and authority. This study concludes that the symbolic elements of Hewokloang’s traditional houses are integral to understanding the community’s identity, beliefs, and social structure, demonstrating how architecture can serve as a cultural text that communicates meaning across generations.

Abstract

The problem in this study is that many students are still outside the school environment when the lesson starts; they are busy talking with their classmates, always asking permission to leave the class during the teaching and learning process, which greatly disrupts the continuity of the teaching and learning process. Interest in learning arises from students' willingness, attention, and activeness, which makes them enjoy the learning process and develop in knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Citizenship education aims to form good citizens, namely individuals who understand, care about, and are aware of their rights and responsibilities. This study aims to determine the causes of low student interest in Civics Education class XI at Caritas Maumere Catholic Private High School and the efforts made to overcome it. The research used qualitative methods with observation, interview, and documentation techniques and data analysis through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data sources came from students and teachers. The results showed that low interest in learning was caused by internal factors, such as health problems, lack of motivation, lack of focus, and low motivation.
