Abstract

This research explores the perspective of human adaptation as a cultural response to ecological change. Ecological and economic pressures drive humans to consciously choose and take advantage of opportunities in their ecological environment. The Bahodopi mining area is the context to explain human adaptation to these ecological changes. Nickel mining results in changes in the ecological environment that have an impact on people's lives. The destruction of the ecosystem affects the lives of people in mining areas such as fishermen in Bahodopi. Coastal fishermen in Bahodopi take advantage of the potential of marine resources by catching fish to meet their living needs before the mine. The marine and coastal environment as a habitat for fish is polluted by mining waste such as factory waste, other liquid waste, and mud materials due to the excavation of materials upstream damaging fish habitats. This condition is not favorable for fishermen because they cannot meet the economic needs of their families. Fishermen's economic activities have stopped because their catches have decreased along with the development of mining activities and the destruction of marine ecosystems. The Bahodopi mining area provides job opportunities for residents to become employees, entrepreneurs, service businesses, and the informal sector along with the number of mining workers. Utilization of natural resource potential such as being a stone breaker, wage labor in pepper gardens, and planting vegetables in the yard. Fishing families take advantage of the potential of other resources and economic opportunities as a form of adaptation to ecological changes.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the processes and effects of internalizing paddisengeng values by the Bugis-Bone ethnicity residing in Masamba Village. This research uses an ethnographic analysis. Ethnographic analysis is an approach that begins with field facts, analyzes them based on cultural theories and relevant arguments to explore the cultural situation of the community, and ultimately yields a conclusion. The results show that the process of internalizing paddisengeng values by the Bugis-Bone ethnicity in Masamba Village, which includes the stages of introduction and understanding as well as acceptance and integration, has successfully instilled values such as compassion, honesty, integrity, honor, decorum, hard work, migration, and religious morality. However, the internalization has also presented challenges, particularly regarding the shift in siri’ values that may encourage ostentatious and vanity behavior, potentially reducing social coherence. Therefore, it is recommended that the Department of Education and Culture of Poso Regency, parents, and the Bugis-Bone ethnicity in Masamba Village continue nurturing and developing the practice of internalizing paddisengeng values. The Department of Education and Culture can support this initiative through educational programs that integrate cultural values into the school curriculum and cultural activities that raise awareness of the importance of these values for the younger generation. Parents are advised to continue teaching their children these values in ways relevant to modern life, emphasizing the importance of hard work, honesty, and integrity without losing the true essence of siri’ values. The Bugis-Bone ethnicity needs to maintain constructive intergenerational dialogue to ensure that these values are preserved and creatively adapted to face the challenges of the times. Through this collaborative approach, paddisengeng values are expected to continue serving as a strong foundation for the Bugis-Bone ethnicity in Masamba Village, enriching their cultural heritage while remaining responsive and adaptive to social changes.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the role of the Mappadendang ritual as part of the Bugis ethnicity’s identity in the area of the Kaili indigenous people and the benefits of the Mappadendang ritual for social life in Kasimbar Palapi Village. This research uses an ethnographic analysis. Ethnographic analysis is an approach that begins with field facts, analyzes them based on cultural theories and relevant arguments to explore the cultural situation of the community, and ultimately yields a conclusion. The results show that the Mappadendang ritual is an essential means for the Bugis ethnicity in the area of the Kaili indigenous people to maintain and express their cultural identity. Through elements such as traditional cake, traditional cuisine, and bodo attire, the Bugis ethnicity demonstrates solidarity and pride in their cultural heritage. Moreover, this tradition provides broad social benefits, including strengthening interethnic fellowship, enhancing social relationships, fostering social care, reinforcing cultural identity, and boosting the spirit of rice farming. Therefore, it is recommended that the Department of Education and Culture of Parigi Moutong Regency support the preservation and adaptation of the Mappadendang ritual by providing facilities and platforms for the Bugis ethnicity and other ethnicities to showcase and share their cultural values. The government should also ensure the availability and affordability of fertilizers and streamline the irrigation process for rice farming, which is a crucial element of the Mappadendang ritual. To the traditional leaders of the Bugis ethnicity, Kaili indigenous people, and other ethnic groups, it is recommended that they continue collaborating in organizing the Mappadendang ritual as a platform for interethnic fellowship and to strengthen cultural identity. The community in Kasimbar Palapi Village is encouraged to continue participating in and supporting this activity. With good cooperation among all parties, the Mappadendang ritual can continue to be preserved as a valuable cultural heritage, enriching diversity and strengthening cultural identity in a region rich with multiple identities.
