Abstract

This article focuses on the examination of traditional burial rituals within the Toraja tribe. It compares the execution of funeral rites in the past, which were deemed customary, with those conducted in the late 1990s. By conducting a comparative analysis of the two ceremonies, it is anticipated that we may ascertain whether there has been any alteration in the execution of the ritual. According to Durkheim, the notion of the holy appears to be a genuine aspect of religious beliefs and practices in religious events. Religious individuals, when closely observed, distinguish between two distinct realms: the sacred realm and the profane realm. Sacred entities are consistently seen as superior, possessing great power, prohibited from engaging in regular interactions, and deserving of utmost reverence. Conversely, profane entities are mundane, unremarkable, and pertain to practical routines of everyday existence.

Abstract

This research explores the perspective of human adaptation as a cultural response to ecological change. Ecological and economic pressures drive humans to consciously choose and take advantage of opportunities in their ecological environment. The Bahodopi mining area is the context to explain human adaptation to these ecological changes. Nickel mining results in changes in the ecological environment that have an impact on people's lives. The destruction of the ecosystem affects the lives of people in mining areas such as fishermen in Bahodopi. Coastal fishermen in Bahodopi take advantage of the potential of marine resources by catching fish to meet their living needs before the mine. The marine and coastal environment as a habitat for fish is polluted by mining waste such as factory waste, other liquid waste, and mud materials due to the excavation of materials upstream damaging fish habitats. This condition is not favorable for fishermen because they cannot meet the economic needs of their families. Fishermen's economic activities have stopped because their catches have decreased along with the development of mining activities and the destruction of marine ecosystems. The Bahodopi mining area provides job opportunities for residents to become employees, entrepreneurs, service businesses, and the informal sector along with the number of mining workers. Utilization of natural resource potential such as being a stone breaker, wage labor in pepper gardens, and planting vegetables in the yard. Fishing families take advantage of the potential of other resources and economic opportunities as a form of adaptation to ecological changes.

Abstract

This research examines the resilience of informal education at YATAPS Mission School in Papua after the Covid-19 pandemic. With the pandemic drastically changing the education landscape, informal education is seen as an effective alternative to formal learning. The study aims to understand how informal education adapts and functions in the post-pandemic situation and its impact on student learning. The research utilized anthropological qualitative methods, including interviews, observation, and document analysis. Students, teachers, and parents were purposively selected to gain diverse perspectives. The results indicate that informal education at YATAPS Mission School has successfully adapted to the post-Covid-19 situation, with various learning activities happening outside the classroom using local resources and community strengths. The findings highlight the role of informal education in complementing formal education, building character, strengthening social ties, and increasing parental involvement. Abstract

One model of ownership of access and the management of coastal and marine resources is a communal property widely applied to indigenous peoples who have ”hak ulayat” (customary rights) over coastal and marine areas. This article aims to analyze and deeply describe the traditional knowledge systems and coastal resource management of the Tobati-Enggros coastal fishermen. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using an ethnographic approach. The data collection techniques used were in-depth interviews and field observations. The data analysis is interpretive descriptive. The results showed the traditional maritime knowledge system in Tobati-Enggros fishers includes the nature of the marine coast, fishing gears, types of fishing, and fishing season. Management of Coastal Resources is also regulated in the Customary Authority under the leadership of ”Keondoafian” (tribal chief) by implementing Manjo in managing coastal resources. This shows that the existence of Manjo customary law and subsistence utilization patterns, based on traditional knowledge systems, the Tobati-Enggros fishing community has local wisdom values closely connected with the aim of marine conservation.

Abstract

This study is about the transformation of the Sakai tribe regarding changes in the natural, socio-economic and political environment. The Sakai tribe has blended in with the community, owning companies, and holding political as well as government positions. Sakai now is the ‘new Sakai’ that is different from the ‘old Sakai’ stereotyped as backward, stupid, and introvert. The purpose of this paper is to describe the response of the Sakai tribe towards changes through their identity construction. We used ethnography as a method and the data was obtained by living in five kebatinan. The researcher lived at the research location, observed the situation, conducted in-depth interviews and had continuous discussions with the participant to deepen their understanding of the data. The data obtained was then then analyzed descriptively by discussing Warren's theory of identity construction and adaptation theory. This study found that the Sakai people adapt significantly to changes in the natural, socio-economic and political environment. One of the sources of this adaptability comes from education, that since the reformation, the Sakai people have massively made educational efforts for their younger generation. This study concludes that every community has the ability to adapt to changes in its environment based on the knowledge possessed by that community.
