Abstract

Emergency conditions that result in cardiac arrest and heart rhythm can lead to rapid death. A delay of 4 minutes will cause the brain not to get enough blood supply and brain damage, and if there is a delay of 10 minutes, it can cause tissue death in the brain. Appropriate preparedness in the form of training for the general public in providing basic life support is expected to be faster and more relevant so that it can minimize deaths due to cardiac arrest in the community. This community service aims to increase the ability of the general public to provide basic life support (BHD) to cardiac arrest patients in the community. The BHD training for the general public was held on June 13, 2024, from 14.00-16.00 WIB, attended by 14 participants at the University of Muhammadiyah Klaten Campus. The methods used are lectures, questions and answers, and demonstrations. The material provided was cardiopulmonary resuscitation for lay helpers (Hand only CPR). The results of the pretest showed that the average score of the participants, for the score range of 0-10 was 4.57, while the average score of the posttest was 9.07. The paired t-test results showed a significant difference in score between before and after training (p=0.001). The results of the assessment of the participant's ability to carry out basic life support were 13 participants in the good category (score ≥75), and 1 participant in the fairly good category (score 70-74), with an average score of 77.4 (score range 1-100). Lay BHD training with lecture and demonstration methods can improve the community's ability to provide basic life support to cardiac arrest patients. Similar training needs to be implemented widely so that the number of ordinary people who are able to provide basic life assistance is larger. Keywords: cardiac arrest, basic life support, lay person.

Abstract

Introduction: Preparedness among vulnerable populations living on volcanic slopes faces serious challenges, given the high potential for disasters such as volcanic eruptions. Vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and pregnant women, often have limited mobility and access to information, which makes it more difficult for them to respond quickly in the event of a disaster. The impact on pregnant women and the elderly is more severe compared to other age groups. This is due to the limitations of both the elderly and pregnant women. This requires the preparedness of pregnant women and the elderly in dealing with disasters. Objectives:   research to determine the relationship of family support to the preparedness of pregnant women and the elderly. Methods: The research is quantitative correlation. The population is all pregnant women and the elderly who live in Balerante village, totaling 35 people. The sampling technique is total sampling with Kendall Tau analysis. Results:   The majority of mothers aged 20-35 years were 95%, high school education as many as 10 respondents (67%), multigravida as many as 8 respondents (54%) and had no complications as many as 14 respondents (93%).  The results showed that the family support of pregnant women was mostly good as many as 8 respondents (53%), and the majority in the elderly family support was good as many as 12 respondents (60%). The majority of pregnant women's good preparedness is in the moderately prepared category, namely 9 respondents (60%) and the majority in the elderly with the Ready category, namely a total of 12 respondents (40%). The results of the p value = 0.001 for pregnant women and for the elderly the p value = 0.009. Conclusions: Family support plays an important role in the preparedness of vulnerable groups, as families can provide emotional support, information, and resources needed to prepare for volcanic eruptions.

Abstract

Background: Peppermint oil has a distinctive refreshing aroma as well as analgesic, antispasmodic, and calming effects, making it suitable for use in aromatherapy. This study aims to develop formulations and evaluate the organoleptic properties of peppermint essential oil-based aromatherapy preparations, which are known to have therapeutic benefits in reducing stress, increasing alertness, and providing a relaxing effect. Method: The research method used a laboratory experimental approach with two formulations of different concentrations of peppermint essential oil, menthol, and olive oil. Organoleptic tests involved visual observation of shape, color, aroma, and sensation on the skin, along with pH measurements and preference tests on 40 respondents. Results: The results showed differences in organoleptic properties between the two formulations. The first formula was brown in color with a strong aroma, while the second formula was yellowish brown with a more fragrant and softer aroma, which was preferred by respondents. Both formulations gave a warm sensation on the skin, while pH measurements showed a range between 5 and 6, which is safe for the skin as per the pH standard of topical products (4.5-6.5). In the favorability test, the second formulation received higher preference from respondents, especially in terms of aroma and feel on the skin. Conclusion: this peppermint oil based aromatherapy formulation showed positive results in organoleptic aspects and pH safety, so it has the potential as a natural aromatherapy product that can be well received by consumers. This research opens up opportunities for further development regarding the stability and therapeutic potential of essential oil combinations in aromatherapy.

Abstract

This research was conducted in several family companies based in North Sumatra due to the presence of numerous private radio companies that can only manage their businesses for one to two generations. In this study, the variables of interest and successor readiness were used in the process of leadership succession in the researched private radio companies. The research was carried out descriptively using descriptive analysis, which was conducted through in-depth interviews. The research findings show that the interest of successors significantly influences the readiness of successors to take over leadership in private radio companies. Many private radio companies have not yet begun the succession process due to the interests of prospective successors. In order to improve their preparedness, successors often engage in capacity-building through various means, whether methodical or not. This shows the situation of many private radio companies that can only survive for one to two generations.

Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies vulnerable groups during natural disasters as including children, pregnant women, the elderly, individuals with chronic illnesses or immune disorders, and those suffering from malnutrition. Individuals with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable during disasters due to health condition disruptions and interruptions in routine healthcare access caused by the disaster. Consequently, these groups face an elevated risk of infectious diseases, respiratory problems, skin integrity issues, and even mortality compared to the general population. According to WHO, chronic illnesses include diabetes mellitus, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. The family plays a crucial role in mitigating these challenges through preparedness, which involves providing information to family members, influencing timely and appropriate decision-making, and serving as a source of social support. Therefore, research is necessary to evaluate the role of families in managing health among members with chronic illnesses. This encompasses assessing the family’s knowledge and skills in health management and developing strategies to enhance these competencies to improve health outcomes for chronic illness-affected families.
