Abstract

Background: Communication skills play an important role in clinical practice. Attitudes toward medical communication skills   that are built since a stage of medical student, would affect practice as a doctor later.  Good communication skills based on positive attitude will improve other clinical skills that are needed as a doctor, also will help a doctor to consider the importance of the improvement of the skills quality related to it. A number of studies have explored this context widely using CSAS as an instrument that consists of 2 subscales, a positive (PAS) and a negative (NAS) subscale. This study aimed to determine the difference in attitudes among students in Faculty of Medicine Pattimura University Ambon toward medical communication skills. Method: This was a cross-sectional analytical study that used primary data, obtained using an Indonesian version CSAS questionnaire that is first validated, thus, the scale consists of 24 items within 13 items as PAS and 11 items as NAS. Subjects were 124 active students of the academic year 2014/2015, woh undergo pre-clinical (semesters 2, 4, 6 and 8) and clinical study (Co Ass), obtained through stratified random sampling and complied the restriction criteria. Data were analysed using Mann-Whitney, Kruskall-Wallis, Unpaired t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and Post-Hoc Bonferroni tests with significance level of p<0,05.  Results: There were no difference in attitude toward communication skills between students across most variables; however, there were differences in negative attitudes (NAS) on medical communication skills between each batch of students (p=0.02).Conclusion: The difference in attitude toward communication skills can be seen between students across study batch in Pattimura University Faculty of Medicine.

Abstract

The educational method applied in the Clinical Skill Lab (CSL) is a student-centered, integrated, problem-based, independent, and multi-professional learning approach. There are many limitations obtained in the CSL process that impact students' satisfaction level with the instructor as a guide for students to deepen a skill. This study aims to determine the relationship between the quality of CSL instructor guidance and student satisfaction level at the Faculty of Medicine, Pattimura University. This study uses a quantitative analytical method with a cross-sectional research design. The sample of this study is students of the 2019, 2020, and 2021 batches, totaling 525 respondents. Data collection uses a questionnaire that is shared with students through Google Forms. The results of the univariate analysis showed that the quality of CSL instructor guidance was mainly in the good category (36.2%), and the level of student satisfaction was in the very satisfied category (52.8%). The bivariate analysis results showed a significant relationship between the quality of guidance provided by CSL instructors and the level of student satisfaction at the Faculty of Medicine, Pattimura University of Ambon (p<0.001). It can be concluded that there is a relationship between the level of quality of guidance provided by CSL instructors and the level of student satisfaction at the Faculty of Medicine, Pattimura University of Ambon.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Communication skills are one of the essential soft skills that doctors must have in building effective relationships with patients. Attitude towards communication skills is influenced by various factors, one of which is the individual's personality type. This study aims to determine the relationship between personality type and attitude towards communication skills in Pattimura University Faculty of Medicine students. This study used a cross-sectional analytic design with a sample size of 399 students from semester 2, 4, 6, and 8 selected using total sampling technique. The instruments used included the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to identify personality types and the Indonesian version of the Communication Skills Attitudes Scale (CSAS) to measure attitudes towards communication skills. The results showed variations in the relationship between personality type and attitudes towards communication skills. Furthermore, the results of this study are expected to be a source of information and evaluation material in designing communication skills learning strategies that are more effective and in accordance with the characteristics of students, as well as contributing to the development of medical education.
