Abstract

Research on the criticism of the Qur'an against the excessive sacralization of the monotheistic symbol is motivated by the emergence of a religious purification movement with the sacred symbols of monotheism that seeks to abolish syncretic Islamic culture. This movement claims to be the purest form of Islamic teachings, while customs are considered to be able to eliminate the authenticity of Islamic teachings so that they turn into shirk and heresy. Then this movement often disbelieves in other Muslim groups (takfirism). However, the excessive sacralization of the monotheistic symbol can actually turn the sacred symbol of monotheism into profane, if it is associated with the sacred and profane theory of Emile Durkheim which states that something sacred should not be mixed with the profane, such as the sentence of monotheism which was originally sacred (holy) turned into profane when used only for worldly purposes.

Abstract

For decades, Indonesia’s development has placed more emphasis on physical aspects. Social sciences were abandoned because the government only looked for easy things. Society will surrender when all that is done is physical development, but social science is not developed. Even only given a small portion. In a national context, society needs to have an independent spirit. The government needs to build the soul of citizens by developing and changing the soul of the colonized into an independent soul. Many events that occur in society are caused by humans starting not to understand their true nature. Forgot to fix a pure soul. As a result, humans carry out actions that are not by religious rules or norms. This research is qualitative with a philosophy-praxis-sufism perspective and it can be concluded that Ki Ageng Suryomentaram in his thoughts as outlined in the book “Ilmu Kawruh Jiwa Suryomentaram, History and the Path to Happiness” emphasizes that he invites us as Indonesian people to feel the taste of life, examine every feeling, and reach the true meaning of happiness. True happiness is not out there but within yourself. Free and independent happiness does not depend on time, place, and circumstances. Understanding the soul will make humans understand their nature in life and society. When humans become aware and begin to understand or understand the soul, they will be able to improve themselves, maintain their actions and attitudes, and understand other people.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between Islam and the state from the perspective of Sayyid Qutb, with a focus on his interpretation of political governance in Islam. Sayyid Qutb is renowned for advocating a symbiotic theory, which posits that religion and the state are mutually dependent. In this framework, Islam requires the support of the state to effectively implement its teachings, while the state needs Islam to provide moral and ethical guidance. Qutb’s perspective serves as a middle path between two opposing paradigms: the integralist approach, which fully merges religion and politics, and the secularist approach, which entirely separates them. His ideas have significantly influenced both modernist and neo-modernist movements within Islamic political thought. By analyzing Qutb’s writings and interpretations, this study underscores the continuing relevance of his ideas in contemporary debates on the role of Islam in governance. The findings suggest that his symbiotic model provides a compelling framework for understanding the dynamic interaction between religion and politics in Islamic societies. Practically, this research offers insights for policymakers and scholars regarding the integration of Islamic values into modern governance systems. Future studies could further explore the implications of this paradigm across diverse sociopolitical contexts, particularly in Muslim-majority countries.

Abstract

Abstract Research on the sacredization of the symbol of God needs to be done in the perspective of the Qur'an in order to find out how the view of the Qur'an is precise and correct and does not deviate from the teachings of tawhid to the formulation of sacred symbols of God. The purpose of this study was to analyze the sacredization of the symbol of God in the Qur'an. Research uses qualitative approaches and methods of literature study. From this research, the conclusion is that the Symbol of God's teachings of tawhid in the Qur'an is a model of God's symbol that is transcendent, namely tombodi him with a pure divine nature and not symbolize Him in a form that is material.

Abstract

Contemporary society often experiences stress, anxiety, and depression due to technological advances and rapid social change. In the Qur'an, Surah Al-Baqarah/2: 183, fasting is described as a comprehensive practice that helps individuals cope with stress and improve mental health through reflection and changes in existential awareness. This study aims to explore self-transformation and harmony between humans and nature through fasting, using approaches from the Qur'an and science. The method used is qualitative descriptive analysis, utilizing relevant literature on fasting, mental health, and human interaction with the environment. The research findings indicate that fasting is a spiritual ritual and teaches simplicity and respect for nature, which supports the balance between humans and the environment. The recommendations from this study are to encourage the practice of fasting to achieve better mental and ecological health, and to expand studies on the impact of fasting in the context of mental health and the environment.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the status of women in Islam by analyzing Qur’anic verses through a thematic exegesis (maudhu’i) approach and by comparing the interpretations of the female exegete Zainab al-Ghazali in Nazarāt fī Kitābillāh and the contemporary exegete Wahbah al-Zuhaili in Tafsīr al-Munīr. The main focus of this study is to explore how both exegetes interpret verses related to women’s roles, rights, and positions within socio-religious contexts. This study complements previous research, such as Fitriya’s thesis, which exclusively examined Zainab al-Ghazali’s perspectives on gender equality, and Suparno’s thesis, which investigated the thoughts of Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida in Tafsīr al-Manār. This research offers a new contribution through a comparative approach between a female and a male exegete on Qur’anic verses concerning women, thereby enriching the field of Qur’anic exegesis and gender studies. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach. Primary data are drawn from the two main tafsir works, while secondary data are obtained from books, scholarly articles, and other supporting literature. The analysis involves comparing both exegetes’ interpretations of ten relevant verses regarding the status of women. The findings reveal that both Zainab al-Ghazali and Wahbah al-Zuhaili emphasize the significance of women’s roles in both domestic and public spheres. However, Zainab highlights the internal struggles and resilience of women, whereas Wahbah tends to offer a more normative and textual interpretation. This study concludes that both exegetes’ thoughts remain highly relevant in addressing contemporary issues such as gender equality, social roles, inheritance rights, women’s leadership, and the persistent social stigma attached to Muslim women. These findings underscore the importance of adopting diverse exegetical approaches to understanding the Qur’anic text in a contextual and responsive manner to contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the concept of religious deviance from the Qur’anic perspective and analyze its relevance to Charles Kimball’s ideas on the dangers of religion. The main focus of this study is to explore how the Qur’an views the phenomenon of religious deviation that arises in religious practices, and to what extent this concept aligns or contrasts with Kimball’s five indicators of religious danger, namely absolute truth claims, blind obedience, the pursuit of an ideal age, justification of any means, and calls for holy war. This research employs a qualitative approach using thematic interpretation (tafsir maudhu‘i), content analysis, and a comparative analysis of Kimball’s thought. The primary sources of the study include the Qur’an, both classical and contemporary tafsir particularly Tafsir al-Munir by Wahbah al-Zuhaili and Kimball’s work When Religion Becomes Evil. The findings reveal that the Qur’an firmly condemns all forms of religious deviation characterized by the misuse of religious authority, excessive fanaticism, intolerance, and the manipulation of sacred teachings for worldly or political purposes. The Qur’an emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between faith, reason, and morality as the foundation of true religiosity, warning that distortion in these three aspects may lead to polytheism, hypocrisy, and disbelief. Kimball’s ideas share common ground with the Qur’anic perspective in criticizing fanaticism and violence in the name of religion; however, the Qur’an provides a more comprehensive normative foundation through the principles of tawhid (divine unity) and rahmatan lil ‘alamin (mercy to all creation). Therefore, this study concludes that preventing religious deviance can only be achieved through a holistic understanding of the Qur’an that harmonizes theological, ethical, and social dimensions in religious life.
