Abstract

Aurantiochytrium microalgae is recognized as heterotrophic microalgae enables to produce high economic value of lipids for the use in health care industries. This research presents the production of biomass containing lipids through the bioconversion of fruit waste using Aurantiochytrium microalgae. Aurantiochytrium microalgae isolate was obtained from isolated mangrove leaves in the mangrove forest of Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan. The production process takes place in three stages, namely standing culture (SC), pre-culture (PC), and main culture. The SC and PC stages took place 48 hours respectively, while the MC took place 120 hours. The source of nutrition at the main cultivation stage (MC) used monosodium glutamate (MSG) as a nitrogen source, while the carbon source was from fruit waste. Amount of 250 grams of fruit waste was mixed and blended, added with 250 ml of water and then sonicated. The mass ratio of nitrogen source and carbon source was 1:3. The maximum of observed microalgal cell diameters for each stage were 14.5 μm (SC), 19.2 μm (PC) and 25.5 μm (MC). Produced biomass in this experiment has the characteristics of a yellow emulsion liquid, pH 6.2, fishy smell and total dissolved solids (TDS) of 4,820 ppm and a wet biomass of 68 g/l

Abstract

Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of semiotic signs in Fiersa Besari's novel Garis Waktu using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory to explore the meaning and symbolism in the narrative. Although previous studies have analyzed this novel in terms of language style and morphology, not many have studied the application of Peirce's semiotic theory in depth, especially in the trichotomy relationship between icons, indexes, and symbols. This study aims to fill this gap by applying a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through listening and note-taking techniques from relevant quotations in the novel, then analyzed using a manual coding method based on Peirce's theory. The main findings show that symbolism such as "stranded on the horizon" and "the fury of inner war" effectively depict emotional conflicts and deep philosophical themes. The conclusion of this study is that semiotic analysis provides a more complex understanding of how writers use signs to convey messages and emotions, and opens up space for further research on symbolism in c ontemporary literary texts.

Abstract

The Indonesian religious-themed horror film industry, as exemplified by Kiblat, Siksa Neraka, and Sijjin, leverages religious symbols to evoke fear and tension, presenting a stark contrast between sacredness and horror. However, this approach has sparked public controversy, with many perceiving it as a desecration of religious sanctity, leading to protests and boycotts that underscore the tension between artistic expression and religious values in Indonesian society. Furthermore, the portrayal of women in these films' posters often reinforces patriarchal stereotypes by depicting them as victims or objects of violence, perpetuating narratives of female subordination and hindering progress toward gender equality. Through Stuart Hall's Representation Theory, this study analyzes the visual and ideological construction of religious symbols and female figures in Indonesian horror film posters, exploring their denotative and connotative meanings to understand the genre's role in shaping social discourse on religion and gender within Indonesia's cultural context.

Abstract

Formaldehyde exposure, implicated on the development of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC), remains a significant concern worldwide, with increasing incidence, morbidity, and mortality cases. This study eager to investigate the antioxidant effect on degree of histopathology from formaldehyde exposure, assessing nasopharyngeal dysplasia progression toward malignancy. Rattus norvegicus divided equally into four groups: control, placebo, formaldehyde-induced (40 PPM), and formaldehyde-induced with antioxidant, followed by dysplasia degree examination under light microscope. The result revealed severe dysplasia in the formaldehyde group, indicating non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. Additionally, antioxidant-treated group presented reduced severity, with lower degree of dysplasia. This result is indicating positive improvement of antioxidant effect toward NPC malignancy, supporting previous studies and further confirming genotoxicity and irritability of formaldehyde. Nevertheless, limitations, existed with lack of sample studied and dose-response analysis, were demanding deeper study need to be done.
