Abstract

The millennial generation in Surakarta faces the imperative need to preserve and fortify the essence of Javanese culture amidst the pervasive forces of globalization driven by internet technology. The emergence of Permadani Studio is perceived as a means to aid millennials in understanding and cherishing local culture. However, what is the social structure within the studio and how does it contribute to the preservation of Javanese culture?. This study adopted a qualitative approach, utilizing in-depth interviews and Focus Discussion Groups to explore the role of Permadani Studio in maintaining the richness of Javanese culture among the millennial generation in Surakarta. Data analysis employed descriptive qualitative methods and Anthony Giddens' structuration theory framework to comprehend the interplay between social structure and individual action in the context of cultural preservation. Through the lens of Anthony Giddens' social structuralism approach, the Pambiwara courses at Permadani Studio demonstrate how social structures, such as Javanese cultural norms and values, shape the institutional framework for cultural preservation. Millennials and course instructors are active agents in rejuvenating cultural preservation practices tailored to their era, showcasing the intricate interaction between structure and agency in safeguarding cultural heritage. These findings underscore the significance of collaboration between social structure and individual agents in addressing the challenges posed by globalization to preserve local culture.

Abstract

Currently, the preservation of traditional Javanese clothing faces significant challenges, particularly as children and adolescents are influenced by globalization and modern fashion trends. This influence has also affected traditional attire, which many children wear on formal occasions, shaping their future social status. Through this activity, an effort is made to expose, experiment with, and reflect on one of the most cosmopolitan aspects of cultural heritage—how people dress. This activity is part of a community service program titled Training on the Use of Traditional Javanese Attire for Children, held on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Sanggar Permadani, Sukoharjo, with 40 participants in attendance. The training was organized by the FISIP UNS Research Group, in collaboration with Sanggar Permadani. The method used was participatory and educational, including lectures, discussions, and hands-on practice with the physical items integrated into the fashion training. The training revealed an increase in participants' understanding, interest, and motivation toward preserving traditional Javanese clothing. On a more abstract level, it is recognized that collective awareness of clothing as a form of identity is continuously being built, although without proper motivation, this effort may face greater challenges.

Abstract

This study explores efforts to build elderly independence through a symbolic interactionist approach at Widhi Asih Elderly Home in Surakarta. Elderly residents in the facility face various limitations physical, psychological, social, and spiritual that affect their autonomy. Using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews and observation, the research reveals that the meaning of independence is not solely rooted in individual conditions but constructed through social interactions and positive symbolic exchanges within the institutional setting. Factors such as personal motivation, family support, and the social climate of the home contribute to reestablishing a sense of agency among the elderly. Institutional strategies including regular physical activities, strengthened social relationships, and spiritual engagement facilitate this process. As a result, residents experience an improved quality of life through the reinforcement of social identity and a sense of self-worth as active members of the community.

Abstract

The batik industry, as part of Indonesia’s creative economy and cultural heritage, faces challenges in maintaining competitiveness while preserving traditional values. This study aims to examine the work ethic patterns of batik entrepreneurs in Girilayu Village, Matesih District, Karanganyar Regency, and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in strengthening them. A qualitative approach was employed through in-depth interviews, observations, and Focus Group Discussions with members of the Batik Giriarum association. The findings show that the work ethic of Girilayu batik makers is marked by flexible time management, independence, and economic motivation based on direct needs. The diffusion of productive values occurs through social agents such as group leaders and senior artisans. Supporting factors include collective culture, personal responsibility, and community support, while the absence of structured time management, incentive systems, and training serves as an inhibiting factor. Using Rogers’ innovation diffusion theory, the study concludes that strengthening the community-based work ethic is crucial for sustaining local creative industries.

Abstract

The digitalization of healthcare services has significantly improved access to data and information regarding HIV/AIDS patients, thereby enhancing monitoring and evaluation efforts. However, discrepancies in data across various providers can lead to inefficiencies and hinder the formulation of comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs. Therefore, integrating sustainability into healthcare service digitalization practices is essential. This research aims to explore the reinforcement of HIV/AIDS prevention and control through a sustainable data management system, using Giddens’ structuration theory as the framework. A qualitative research method with an exploratory approach was employed, including data collection through observation, in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with key informants, and document processing. The informants included the person responsible for health promotion at the Health Office of Surakarta City, members of the Regional AIDS Commission (KPAD), staff from hospitals and several public health centers (Puskesmas) in Surakarta, field officers, members of the Peer Support Group (KDS), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in HIV/AIDS prevention and control, as well as HIV/AIDS patients and at-risk individuals. The research findings reveal that both people (as the agency) and institutions responsible for health data collection must collaborate to establish a sustainable data system. This collaboration ensures data accuracy and continuity, which, in turn, strengthens HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs. A sustainable data system also supports medication adherence, timely updates on patient information, and various other aspects of HIV/AIDS prevention and control.

Abstract

This article explores the efforts of Sanggar Permadani in developing, preserving, and sustaining Javanese culture. The primary focus of the Javanese cultural heritage preserved by Sanggar Permadani is pambiwara, individuals responsible for organizing and guiding traditional Javanese ceremonial events. This preservation is crucial as fewer people are performing traditional Javanese wedding ceremonies and employing the services of pambiwara. This qualitative study employs an ethnographic approach, with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that Sanggar Permadani has successfully preserved Javanese culture by training new generations of pambiwara through annual courses or training sessions held over five months. All participants are of Javanese descent and come from diverse educational backgrounds. To date, Sanggar Permadani has graduated 20 cohorts. The findings align with Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital and embodied state, which posits that individuals shape their identity based on cultural capital and educational investment imparted from birth.
