Abstract

Living in a tourist area is frequently viewed as an advantage for students learning English as it provides more opportunities to practice the language. The present study looked at the English performance of students residing in tourist and non-tourist areas and explored how they learned English and the factors affecting their language performance. A comparative study was conducted using a concurrent mixed-method approach. The data were collected through documents, tests, and interviews and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively to examine differences and determine the main themes between the respective groups. The result of the study indicates that the two groups differed statistically in terms of English school grades and speaking test scores with large effect sizes (d = 3.26 and d = 1.28), respectively. Even though the proficiency test did not show a significant difference (p = .72), the non-tourist group outperformed the tourist group in all assessment types. The interviews revealed that regardless of the different attributes and sites where students lived, the two groups were similar in how they learned English. The main factors affecting the English language performance of both groups were (1) strong motivation, (2) exposure to English through songs, games, movies, andsocial media, and (3) family support.

Abstract

Blended learning, integrating traditional face-to-face instruction with online components, has gained momentum in higher education. This study aimed to explore the effect of blended learning on the academic performance of students enrolled in the English Department across multiple universities in Aceh, Indonesia. The research specifically aims to compare the effectiveness of blended and offline learning models in facilitating students' learning achievements. The study population encompasses undergraduate students from seven distinguished universities within the Aceh Province, making the research findings relevant and applicable to a diverse range of educational institutions. Quantitative data, gathered through a survey method, formed the basis of this research, enabling a thorough analysis of students' learning outcomes in both blended and offline learning environments. The results of the study reveal a compelling insight: there is no statistically significant difference in students' learning achievements between blended and offline learning models (P = 0.062 > 0.05). This intriguing finding challenges traditional perceptions and underscores the potential of blended education as a viable and effective alternative to conventional classroom learning within the English Department curriculum. The implications of these results are far-reaching, suggesting that universities and lecturers can leverage blended learning platforms without compromising the quality of education provided to English Department students. This research contributes valuable insights to the ongoing discourse on the evolution of educational methodologies, emphasizing the importance of embracing technology-enhanced learning approaches. As the world continues to advance digitally, this study provides a foundation for future exploration and implementation of blended learning strategies, fostering an inclusive and innovative educational landscape for students in Aceh, Indonesia.

Abstract

Smartphones multi-functionality and practicality features are very promising in helping students to learn English language. Numerous applications related to English enables the students to be exposed to English and learn independently and conveniently outside the classroom. This study explored students own use of android applications to help them in learning English. Specifically, it investigated the types of apps the students use, examined their motives in using the apps, and figured out how the apps were perceived to help in acquiring English. The study was conducted as a qualitative study involving 15 non-English majors students recruited from three different campuses in West Aceh. The data were collected through personal interview and focus group discussion that were transcribed and analyzed by coding and concluding the information into a number of themes. It was found that the students had used a number of android apps, particularly dual language dictionary apps to support their informal English language learning. The apps were considered very helpful as the students could access vocabulary and be exposed to English frequently. Easy access and practical use of apps were perceived as the major advantages benefiting the students in gaining vocabulary and other English learning materials to develop their English language skills.

Abstract

The entrepreneurial spirit within Chinese-Indonesian families has long been recognized as a factor in their economic resilience, yet the educational patterns that transmit this spirit across generations remain underexplored. This study aims to examine how family-based education fosters entrepreneurial character among Chinese youth in Surakarta, focusing on the interplay of cultural values, practical immersion, and adaptive strategies. The central research question asks: How do educational practices within Chinese-Indonesian families contribute to cultivating entrepreneurial spirit in the next generation? This research employs a qualitative approach using thematic analysis to interpret data gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal three major themes: first, practical immersion as pedagogy, where children are engaged in family business tasks from an early age to internalize perseverance, discipline, and interpersonal competence; second, familial trust and solidarity as social capital, where kinship bonds and moral values of honesty, responsibility, and integrity sustain intergenerational continuity; and third, the negotiation of formal education, experiential learning, and technology, where families balance schooling with hands-on practice and cautiously integrate digital tools as both opportunities and risks. The study concludes that entrepreneurial education in Chinese-Indonesian families is not merely an economic strategy, but a cultural and ethical practice embedded in family life. Theoretically, this study shows that entrepreneurial spirit is socially enacted within kinship structures rather than taught solely in schools. Practically, the findings suggest that entrepreneurship programs can be strengthened through family-based approaches that emphasize early immersion, trust, ethics, and guided use of technology.
