Abstract

Abstract

Research into mobile game addiction has increased over the previous two decades. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between on-line mobile gaming and academic performances among adolescent students in Aceh's elementary schools. The study revealed that boys are more of a player compared to girls who often play games and those who play online games are around 11-12 years old have an average playing time 3-5 hours/day. The research population consisted of elementary students from Aceh, with a sample size of 55 pupils. Included in the study was the Game Addiction Scale (Lemmens et al., 2009). Then, using regression analysis, the hypothesis was tested. From the finding, we can conclude that academic performance was found to be negatively associated with online gaming. This is owing to the fact that playing games for long periods of time reduces their ability to focus on academic tasks. This study can serve as a reference to adolescents online gaming habits, which could be a factor affecting their academic achievement.

Abstract

School and family are important factors for student achievement, so they must collaborate with each other. However, the Covid-19 pandemic that has occurred has made students and teachers switch from face-to-face classes to virtual classes. This also changes the pattern of collaboration between schools and parents. Using the 6 types of collaboration by Epstein (1997), this study aims to investigate the patterns of collaboration that occur between teachers and schools during a pandemic. The method in this research is qualitative using purposive sampling technique. Interviews were conducted on principals, teachers and parents of students. The results showed that there were differences in the pattern of cooperation before the pandemic and during the pandemic, where there were a number of types of cooperation that did not occur during the pandemic.

Abstract

Multilingualism is a defining feature of higher education in West Aceh, where students navigate complex linguistic environments across academic and social domains. Understanding how these students manage language choice and code-switching offers insight into the dynamics of communication in multilingual contexts. This study aims to examine the code-switching practices and language preferences of multilingual students in a university setting. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were gathered from five English department students through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in language behavior across different contexts. The analysis revealed that tag switching, particularly the insertion of Bahasa Indonesia phrases into English discourse, was the most frequent code-switching strategy during classroom interactions. Outside the classroom, Acehnese was predominantly used in domestic settings, while Bahasa Indonesia and English were commonly used in peer communication. Participants indicated that lecturers' use of code-switching between English and Bahasa Indonesia facilitated comprehension of complex academic content. These findings underscore the strategic and context-dependent use of multiple languages among students, reflecting the dynamic and adaptive nature of multilingual practices in West Aceh's higher education landscape.

Abstract

Living in a tourist area is frequently viewed as an advantage for students learning English as it provides more opportunities to practice the language. The present study looked at the English performance of students residing in tourist and non-tourist areas and explored how they learned English and the factors affecting their language performance. A comparative study was conducted using a concurrent mixed-method approach. The data were collected through documents, tests, and interviews and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively to examine differences and determine the main themes between the respective groups. The result of the study indicates that the two groups differed statistically in terms of English school grades and speaking test scores with large effect sizes (d = 3.26 and d = 1.28), respectively. Even though the proficiency test did not show a significant difference (p = .72), the non-tourist group outperformed the tourist group in all assessment types. The interviews revealed that regardless of the different attributes and sites where students lived, the two groups were similar in how they learned English. The main factors affecting the English language performance of both groups were (1) strong motivation, (2) exposure to English through songs, games, movies, andsocial media, and (3) family support.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges faced by English teachers in Thailand when teaching students with a Thai accent and explores the strategies they employ to address these difficulties. The phonetic differences between Thai and English often lead to pronunciation difficulties, comprehension issues, and reduced self-confidence among students. Using qualitative methods, this research gathered data from interviews with three English teachers at Tessaban 2 Bansadao School. The findings indicate that limited English exposure, difficulty distinguishing certain phonemes, and the influence of Thai tonal and intonation patterns significantly hinder students’ learning. In response, teachers implemented phonetic drills, multimedia-assisted instruction, and various communication techniques to enhance pronunciation and engagement. Rather than focusing on accent reduction, the study emphasizes the importance of intelligibility in spoken English. By identifying accent-specific teaching strategies, this research contributes to more effective instructional practices for Thai-accented learners of English, ultimately improving their pronunciation and overall language skills.

Abstract

This research examines the growing interest in language attitudes over recent decades. Focusing on Kluet Raya region, this study explores the regional languages used across various sub-districts and the attitudes of residents toward them. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the geographic distribution and attitudes of local community in the Kluet Raya region toward their heritage languages. The researchers also use linguistic maps to reconstruct areas where Acehnese, Aneuk Jamee, and Kluet languages are spoken within the sub-districts in Aceh Selatan district. This study adopts a qualitative approach in an attempt to gain a comprehensive understanding of community attitudes on language diversity in the region. Twelve participants, selected through purposeful sampling to represent diverse backgrounds, participated in in-depth interviews. Findings reveal a strong positive attitude toward heritage languages, with local languages viewed as equally prestigious across the region. There is also a clear preference for bilingual education that includes both Indonesian and local languages for children in Kluet Raya.
