Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the psychological effects that have been drawn by the implementation of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on university students. The approach implemented in carrying out this study was a descriptive qualitative approach. There were 140 students involved as respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire set that was generated from Wiles (2020). Before proceeding with data collection process, the validity of the instrument was checked, and the items were valid. Then, the data were analyzed using Interactive Analysis as suggested by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The result shows that from the seven mental effects raised from increased screen time, the students admit that they most likely feel fatigued (100%), they experience physical pain such as headache, shoulder sore, eyesore, and others (100%), they have bad time management (98.6%), they feel isolation being drawn from their classmates (68.6%), and they experienced uncertainty about the lecturer’s explanation during the online classes. Hence, it is suggested that there is a special unit to care about the students’ mental health during online learning in this pandemic.

Abstract

The Depik Fishermen (Rasbora Tawarensis/Lepsotoma) in Lake Laut Tawar, Central Aceh, mostly still employ traditional systems in the process of selling Depik Fish. Introduction to digital marketing is needed for Depik fishermen to market this endemic fish to the public. The aim of this community service was to increase the income of Depik fishermen in Lake Laut Tawar and to explain various digital marketing strategies suitable for increasing sales of Depik fishermen in Lake Laut Tawar. The community service method used Participatory Action Research (PAR) with interview instruments, observations, seminars, and training to obtain desired results. The results of the community service successfully introduced digital marketing systems to Depik fishermen by creating Instagram accounts, opening shops on Shopee and Online Stores. Additionally, it introduced online Sharia financial platforms besides Banks, such as Investree, Ammana – Online Sharia Loans, Online P2P Lending Loans, BSalam, and others. There were also investment platforms like Amartha.com, specializing in SMEs, Bibit with its flagship product mutual funds, and crowdfunding systems like Tani Fund. However, there were some issues such as decreasing Depik catch results due to the use of floating cages, resorts along the lake, and the presence of Hoe fishermen. As for Depik fish catches, in the first quarter of 2021 it amounted to 12.602 tons, then increased in the second quarter to 18 tons, then decreased in the third quarter to 1.444 tons and significantly decreased again in the sixth quarter to 0.031 tons.

Abstract

Living in a tourist area is frequently viewed as an advantage for students learning English as it provides more opportunities to practice the language. The present study looked at the English performance of students residing in tourist and non-tourist areas and explored how they learned English and the factors affecting their language performance. A comparative study was conducted using a concurrent mixed-method approach. The data were collected through documents, tests, and interviews and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively to examine differences and determine the main themes between the respective groups. The result of the study indicates that the two groups differed statistically in terms of English school grades and speaking test scores with large effect sizes (d = 3.26 and d = 1.28), respectively. Even though the proficiency test did not show a significant difference (p = .72), the non-tourist group outperformed the tourist group in all assessment types. The interviews revealed that regardless of the different attributes and sites where students lived, the two groups were similar in how they learned English. The main factors affecting the English language performance of both groups were (1) strong motivation, (2) exposure to English through songs, games, movies, andsocial media, and (3) family support.

Abstract

Cases of child sexual abuse in West Aceh have been increasing at an alarming rate, necessitating a community-based prevention strategy. This study aims to empower the community in preventing sexual abuse through an education and advocacy model based on local wisdom. The research employs the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, which involves the community in the process of problem identification, solution design, program implementation, evaluation, and monitoring. Activities include an initial survey, the development of educational materials, and training sessions for parents, teachers, and community leaders. The findings indicate an increase in community awareness of sexual abuse from 40% to 85%, as well as an improvement in understanding of reporting procedures from 30% to 80%. These results confirm that a community-based approach grounded in local wisdom is effective in raising public awareness of child protection, making it a sustainable prevention model.

Abstract

The development of language learning mobile application soft-wares (apps) for smart mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computer has risen amazingly in these recent days. These apps were continuously reported to be highly potential to support the students to learn the target language. This study introduced two free English learning apps to the students and investigated how they made use of the apps to support their English learning. More specifically, it examined how their English motivation in learning English is, how they used the apps, and whether their different level of motivation influenced the time they spent in accessing the apps. The study was conducted in a mixed method approach utilizing daily journal and questionnaire as the instruments to collect data. The finding pointed that the students were considerably active in using both of the apps. They could enjoy the practicality and flexibility of learning English by the apps despite some superficial engagement. In addition, although students’ English learning motivation was found to have no influence on the amount of time spent in using the apps, their positive response toward using the apps was a potential indication to foster independent English learning outside the classroom. A further detailed finding was discussed along with important issues in the current trends of mobile language learning.
