Abstract

This research aims at describing language acquisition particularly at the level of phonological competence attained by mentally retarded children. The data in this research are gathered from children, who is mentally retarded, at the Panti Asuhan Yatim Sejahtera Banjarnegara. These data include vocabularies which are primarily nouns, for instance the name of transportations, fruits, and buildings. This is a descriptive-qualitative research of which steps were giving stimuli to the targeted child to pronounce some vocabularies. These pronounced-vocabularies were then employed in this research to further be examined. In order to discover the stages of language acquisition specifically at the level of phonological competence, the data will be analyzed with phonetic syllabus. Based on the result of the analysis, it indicates that the language acquisition of this mentally disabled child phonologically pronounced vocoid [i], [I], [e], [«], [a], [u], [U], [o], [¿], and [\]; and contoid sounds [p], [b], [t], [d], [k], [g], [c], [j], [h], [l], [m], [n], [÷], [w]; while sounds such as [Ö], [s], [r], [z], [q], and [v] were not able to be pronounced. In short, the phonological stage of language acquisition by mentally disabled child was obtained but it was not fully acquired. This research aims at describing language acquisition particularly at the level of phonological competence attained by mentally retarded children. Abstract

This paper investigates depictions of the world in two travel stories by Agustinus Wibowo in Selimut Debu (2010) and Jihan Davincka in Memoar of Jeddah (2013). The dissimilarity of both stories particularly in projecting the view of the world does not only accentuate different nuances but also the propensity of authors’ observations towards the objects they encounter such as places, people, and culture. Therefore, this study focuses on how travel writings own distinct ways in narrating the story of the author’s journey. In accordance with the problem, this study employed theoretical concepts proposed by Thompson specifically about reporting the world; that travel writers have certain tendency in their descriptions of the objects they see and involvement of the ‘self’ during the journey. This study then explores these two works to seek the data indicating the subjectivity to be sequentially selected and analysed. Eventually, it is found that Selimut Debu performs alteration in the involvement of the ‘self’; while Memoar of Jeddah emphasises more on personal involvement.

Abstract

Abstract

Trauma inherited by forbearers from those who had suffered racial injustice can endure so much consequence for later generations. Similarly, what had been affected to intergenerational Jews around the world about the Holocaust was, to an extent, repeated by Japanese Americans who had experienced incarceration during the World War II. This tragedy was recorded and reflected in several art and literary works including photography, short stories, and music. Interestingly, these eerie memories transmitted by the postgeneration or referred as ‘witness’ instead of ‘testifier’ (survivor) can be thoroughly seen present and well understood in such works. One of which is a song written by an American musician, Mike Shinoda, entitled Kenji. Therefore, this paper aims at figuring out on how this traumatic experience inhabited by the person who seemed to own the memories coming from someone else. Later in this study, the problem will be approached with postmemory by Frosh gradually by investigating constructive process in the lyrics of Kenji. In order to enhance discussion on this issue, the details of each line will be further analyzed with the concept of postmemory including memory, transmission and constructive process. As a result, the findings indicate that transmission of the trauma is reimagined through ‘actively’ constructive process by the songwriter as the ‘witness’ of the Japanese American incarceration. Rather than picturing the memory in similar context, the witness employs testimony in his creative reinvention to offer ‘new context’ in working through the trauma.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to (1) improve the quality of the learning process to write paragraphs with a critical thinking stimulus using the mind mapping method and (2) improve the ability to write paragraphs with a critical thinking stimulus using the mind mapping method. The research subjects are students taking Indonesian courses in science and social science majors at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. Data sources include lesson plans, photos, test results, a list of scores, field notes, and notes on interview results. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interviews, tests, and documents. The achievement indicator is 75%. The research procedure includes preparation, initial survey, cycle implementation, observation, and reporting. Mastery of critical thinking skills in writing paragraphs is also reflected through a long continuous process starting from the ability of students to build references and social relationships such as cooperation with other students, communicating with others, tolerance, respecting the opinions of others, and being open to criticism from others. Other aspects observed encompass the ability of students to acquire confidence that is essential to possess the ability and capability to complete learning tasks. Furthermore, students can master the teaching materials that they have studied at least 75% of what should be achieved per the specific instructional objectives intended.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the construction of Kartini figure in two Indonesian films titled R.A. Kartini (1982) and Kartini (2017) and how it represents the idealization of Indonesian woman in both eras. By utilizing textual analysis, the study finds different images of Kartini presented in the films. The 1982 film tends to emphasize on the critical nature of Kartini and her anti-colonial attitude. Moreover, Kartini is also presented as a figure of Javanese woman who is characterized by her feminine gestures and manner. Meanwhile, the 2017 film constructs Kartini figure differently. Instead of focusing on her femininity, the film constructs Kartini as an energetic, and rebellious young woman. The different characterizations of Kartini presented in the films indicate the shifting image of an idealized woman in both eras. As the first film produced in 1982, the ideal woman is represented as a feminine and motherly figure. Meanwhile in the second film, Kartini is imagined as the representation of the female millennial generation, characterized by their productivity, and creativity.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the self-compassion depicted in Paperweight novel to overcome Stevie's bulimia nervosa. Paperweight by Meg Haston is a novel containing psychological issue related to eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, in Stevie as the main character. Stevie, who initially had suicidal thoughts because she felt neglected by her family and friends, eventually realized to recover from bulimia nervosa. Stevie’s realization to recover from bulimia is related with self-compassion because it is a component that reduces negative thoughts in someone with mental illness including bulimia nervosa. Then, in order to solve the problem, self-compassion theory by Neff (self-kindness, common humanity, mindfulness) is employed in this research. This research is qualitative research which was done subsequently by reading and rereading the novel, eliminating, identifying, and grouping, interpreting, describing, and analysing the data. In this research, the researchers found that Stevie possessed self-kindness to do treatment and she started doing fun things. Then, common humanity is found when Stevie realizes in this world every individual has his/her own problems. It is indicated that Stevie possessed mindfulness when she chose to leave an unpleasant memory and remember the pleasant one. As a result, self-compassion helps Stevie to recover from bulimia nervosa.
