Abstract

Abstract

Eid al-Adha is an annual Muslim celebration throughout the world indicated by sacrificing animals such as cattles, goats or sheep. This study aimed to analyse the distribution of slaughtering points, types and the number of animals being slaughtered as well as antemortem and postmortem abnormalities of the carcasses during Eid al-Adha 1440 H in Malang City. Data were collected from the geocode service location and the secondary data were obtained through questionnaire. This study listed a total of 145 slaughtering points located in Blimbing, Kedung Kandang, Klojen, Lowokwaru, and Sukun District with 3102 animals being sacrificed. The slaughtering points were taken place in the office yards, mosque yards, home yards, school yards or other public fields. As many as 75.86% of slaughtering points provided special shelters for the animals before being slaughtered. The antemortem examination resulted that animals from 21.38% of the slaughtering points suffered from conjunctivitis, lesions on the skin, broken horns, and lameness. Proportions of apparent postmortem abnormalities were measured respectively: cattle 64.83%, goat 41.38%, and sheep 4.14%.  Hence, we recommend to further involve the veterinarians to monitor the animal condition during Eid al-Adha and to ensure the slaughtering processes were done properly.

Abstract

Avian influenza virus subtype H9N2 (AIV-H9N2) has been a concern for poultry health in the last 20 years. The virus emerged in domestic poultry in the mid-1990s and has been reported in several Asian countries, including Myanmar. AI subtype H9N2 caused huge economic losses to the poultry industry in the form of respiratory distress and 25% weight loss in broiler chickens. This study discusses the administration of Avian Influenza (AI) H9N2 strain inactivated vaccine to commercial broiler chickens at JAPFA COMFEED Myanmar Pte Ltd. The vaccination process was carried out through subcutaneous injection in the neck and intramuscular injection in the pectoralis musculus in the chest area of chickens at 11 days of age, with a dose of 0.5 ml per chicken. The vaccine used was VAKSIMUNE® AI H9 which uses oil as the emulsion material. Results from the HI serology test showed that 6 cages from Myothar and Wah Net Chaung farms showed protective antibody titers against Avian Influenza H9N2 virus at 30-40 days of age, with normal titer values or ≥24. This indicates that the AI subtype H9N2vaccine used is an effective antigen, capable of stimulating the broiler immune system, and has implications for increasing antibodies every week. This study contributes to the understanding of AI H9N2 vaccination management in commercial broilers at JAPFA COMFEED Myanmar Pte Ltd. With positive results in the serology test, it can be concluded that vaccination using VAKSIMUNE® AI H9 is effective in protecting broilers from Avian Influenza H9N2 infection, providing strong support to the sustainability of production and animal health in a commercial farm environment.

Abstract

The development of yoghurt variations is increasingly diverse nowadays. The addition of black rice bran flour into yoghurt processing can increase the functional value of yoghurt, including increasing taste, antioxidant content, and dietary fiber. This research was to determine the effect of storage time in goat's milk yoghurt with the addition of black rice bran flour at a cold temperature of 4c on acidity and alcohol levels. The research used with 5 treatments, 4 repetitions. The treatment includes storage periods  i.e., 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks. The acidity level will be calculated for each treatment group using the acid-base and alcohol titration method using the pycnometer method. The data obtained were analyzed using the one way ANOVA test followed by the Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results show that storage time has a very significant effect (p˂0.01) on acidity and alcohol levels. The highest acidity level was in week 2 (0.47%), then decreased continuously in weeks 3 and 4 of storage time. The alcohol content increased in line with storage time, reaching 0.0043% in week 4. If  we look at the acidity and alcohol levels, the recommendation for consuming goat's milk yoghurt with the addition of black rice bran flour is no more than 1 weeks of storage time.
