Abstract

Students today is expected to possess 21st-century skills, one of which is Problem Solving Skills (PSS). The importance of mastering this skill needs to be accompanied by the availability of a measuring tool. This research addresses this need by developing and validating the Problem-Solving Skill Scale. The development of this scale is focused on guidance and counseling students. The research and development of this instrument follow the educational design research method according to Plomp and Nieveen. Four hundred students were involved to test the construct validity. Problem-solving skills were measured based on three aspects: (1) Problem-Solving Confidence, (2) Approach-Avoidance Style, (3) Personal Control.  Data were analyzed using the Rasch model by the WinSteps software. The research results describe the instrument's quality, the person-item interaction , the item difficulty level (item measures), fit and misfit items, and the distribution of respondents' abilities and the distribution of item levels on the same scale, and the scale’s ability to measure what it intends to measure. The Rasch analysis results show that the PSS Scale is good, precise, and has item fit with the model.  The PSS Scale is a valid and reliable measuring tool for accurately measuring students' problem-solving skills.  This research discusses implications and recommendations for further research efforts to facilitate the improvement of problem-solving skills in students using this measurement tool.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and describe the essence of collaboration activities conducted by school counselors with parents from the perspective of school counselors. This transcendental phenomenological study consisted of several stages: identifying phenomena, bracketing, data collection, data analysis, and data presentation. It involved six male and female school counselors from various junior high schools as participants. They have different backgrounds and lengths of service, allowing diverse interpretations of collaboration. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, supported by supplementary data. The results and discussions are categorized into four sections: existing collaboration programs in schools, the experiences of collaboration held by the counselors, the personal significance of collaboration, and the enhancement of personal quality acquired through collaboration. Future studies are recommended to explore efforts to enhance collaboration skills in prospective school counselors, the need for developing a digital platform for parent-school counselor collaboration, and the necessity of providing continuous training to school counselors to improve collaboration skills.

Utilising Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and narrative inquiry, data were collected from 18 school counsellors and 6 Principals/Vice Principals across public and private high schools. Thematic analysis, supported by NVivo software, identified ten key themes. Findings reveal that students’ internal motivation and future goals are the most dominant factors, while the role of parents and family environment emerges as the most prominent external influence. Other contributing factors include self-perception, socioeconomic conditions, school environment, teacher roles, aspirations, and educational policies. These results underscore the crucial synergy between school and family environments, highlighting the need for relevant and challenging educational policies that foster a growth mindset. Abstract

This study investigates the factors influencing the growth mindset of high school students in Surakarta through a social-cognitive perspective. Employing a mixed-method approach with an explanatory sequential design, the research examined the linear relationship between parental involvement, teacher engagement, and cultural values with students’ growth mindsets, while also exploring educators’ perspectives and integrating quantitative and qualitative findings. Participants included 395 students and 24 educators (guidance and counseling teachers and principals). The instruments consisted of self-assessment scales measuring growth mindset, cultural values, perceptions of parental involvement and teacher engagement, along with narrative inquiry interviews. Quantitative analysis revealed a significant linear relationship between the three independent variables and students’ growth mindset. Classical assumptions were met, including normality (p = 0.058 > 0.05), absence of multicollinearity (VIF < 10), homoscedasticity, and no autocorrelation (Durbin-Watson = 2.056). Multiple regression analysis confirmed the model’s feasibility (F = 68.045, p < 0.001), with the three predictors jointly explaining 34.3% of variance (R² = 0.343). Individually, cultural values showed the strongest effect (β = 0.400, t = 9.120, p < 0.001), followed by parental involvement (β = 0.203, t = 4.218, p < 0.001) and teacher engagement (β = 0.154, t = 3.236, p = 0.001). Qualitative analysis identified five themes: intrinsic motivation, life goals, cultural and family influences, the role of teachers and schools, and social support. The integrated findings suggest that growth mindset is ecosystemic, shaped by interactions of personal, behavioral, and environmental factors. This study extends understanding of growth mindset within the Indonesian, particularly Javanese, cultural context and provides practical implications for educational interventions.
