Abstract

This research is motivated by the need of textbook used in the process of literature lecturing, especially prose. Critical theories discourse contained in literary work can be an interesting issue when textbooks used in Higher Education have not provided a mandate and a good and strong model to imitate. Given the importance of the role of textbooks in the process of knowledge transfer other than lecturers, it is necessary to develop literary coursebooks that subtly contain critical theories in order to produce better quality resources in changing attitudes and actions of readers. This research used a simplified Research and Development method that only covered three main stages: (1) preliminary study, (2) product formulation and development, and (3) product validation and dissemination. In addition, this study focused on coursebooks containing critical theories for English Education students of 6th Semester on Basic Analysis of Prose course at State University of Singaperbangsa Karawang. The coursebook as the development product for Basic Analysis of Prose in English Language Education Program at State University of Singaperbangsa Karawang has a total average analysis of validation results and small group testing above 80%, so it can be categorized as valid and feasible.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the need of exploring the students’ perception of e-learning implementation of two English language subjects in the time of COVID-19 pandemic. This research is descriptive, and data were collected through online questionnaire. The participants were students of International Business of Padjadjaran University taking English for Business Purposes and Speaking for Business Purposes courses. The result of the analysis shows that 100% of students participated in e-learning, and 96.4% have accessibility in online learning. However, only 56% expressed satisfaction with the implementation of e-learning.As a result, the students’ perceptions of e-learning are somewhat fruitful; further, it can promote flexibility, offer personalisation where learners can choose their learning path and pace. Fair assessment of students’ perception in e-learning may grant a good precedent in the implementation of full online learning due to physical isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which alternatively can be done with the method of blended learning in the New Normal.

Abstract

Abstract This article was written with the impetus to see the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn), Kampus Merdeka (Independent Campus) program launched by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Indonesia), particularly on the policy of students’ right to take up to three semesters outside of their program. This policy aims to give students independence in developing their own knowledge and interests so that they will be better prepared upon graduation. In practice, the application of this curriculum innovation is not as smooth as expected because the study program faces various challenges, both technical and administrative, when facilitating students in pursuing their studies. To date, many researchers have reviewed Merdeka Belajar, Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policies in Higher Education, but there has been yet article specifically discussing the implementation of students’ rights from English Studies program in taking credits outside their study program, so this research attempts to fill this gap. In this qualitative descriptive study, the method used was observation and documentation. Data were collected from learning activities at the English Studies Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, in the 2020/2021 Academic Year. The results of the study show that the main challenge in implementing MBKM curriculum and its policy is administrative issues such as building partnership between study programs and external parties. However, one of the positive aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic is that the online learning turns out to be very supportive for the implementation of this program. It is more likely that the program stays open for opportunities and there is room for improvement by offering more elective courses in the curriculum to give students more freedom.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to describe and explain the students’ perception of English learning through the card game Hearthstone for students in the English Studies program. In COVID-19, there has been an increase in playing time with online games, including Hearthstone. Spending too much time on gaming activities may be problematic, but it can also help students learn English sensibly. Thus, this research focuses on discovering students’ perceptions of learning English using a collectible card game (CCG) online game. The researcher used an online survey due to physical distancing regulations in this qualitative research. Using purposive sampling, the writer chose three students from the English Studies program who played Hearthstone routinely during the pandemic as a source of entertainment and learning activity. The interview result showed that all respondents generally had excellent and positive perceptions about English learning through Hearthstone. They were more interested and more motivated in learning English through Hearthstone because it was fun, enjoyable, and challenging. It also showed that all respondents had their strategies in the learning process, consisting of three steps: planning, monitoring, and evaluation. Despite its attached negative stigma, an online game like Hearthstone turned out to be beneficial in helping students learn English amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract

Social distancing policy in Indonesia is implemented to flatten the COVID-19 curve and regulated under West Java Governor regulation number 30 of 2020 regarding social distancing guidance and Governor Decree number 443/Kep240-Hukham/2020 regarding social distancing implementation in Bandung, Cimahi, Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, and Sumedang Regency. However, the policy implementation has crippled the economy of Bandung, and the tourism industry has been hit hard. Bandung Culture and Tourism Agency (Disparbud) recorded a significant decline in Bandung visitor arrival, falling from 4,8 million to 1,2 million visitors in 2020. In light of this issue, it is crucial to take practical measures to stimulate Bandung tourism industry during the pandemic while following the social distancing protocols. Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) Community Service, integrated with Student Fieldwork (KKN 2020/2021), was conducted to address the issue. Students from various faculties in Unpad and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences lecturers collaborated with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in Bandung to promote digital marketing and communication strategies. The students worked together with MSME practitioners to produce digital content, such as posters and videos, to promote their products and services.
