Abstract

The use of instructional media has become essential in addressing challenges faced by teachers in delivering effective lessons. This research, therefore, focuses on the development of video as an instructional media for teaching English listening skills to seventh-grade students. The research identifies a gap in traditional teaching methods, where English teachers primarily rely on textbooks, resulting in passive student engagement and limited focus on listening skills. The lack of appropriate instructional media makes the problem more complicated, despite available resources like language laboratories, LCD screens, and sound systems. To bridge this gap, the researcher developed video created with AVS Video Editor to stimulate students' interest and improve listening skills. Hence, the research follows the research and development (R&D) approach proposed by Sugiyono (2010). The development procedure from Sugiyono, then is adapted to: 1) analysis, 2) data collection, 3) product creation, 4) validation of the product, and 5) product revision. The findings highlight the effectiveness of the developed video media in capturing students' attention and aligning with curriculum objectives. The validation process leads to constructive feedback, prompting revisions such as adding illustrations, adjusting audio volume, and improving pronunciation. The final product is in the form of videos containing some listening materials under the topic of Introduction, describing people, and giving direction. It also considers feedback from the experts and the teacher in order to give solutions to the teaching problems and provide valuable media for enhancing English listening skills in seventh-grade students in MTs Al Karimi.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between explicit grammar knowledge and English proficiency levels among students. The study involved nine Indonesian teaching students who were divided into three groups, namely seven new teachers who were teaching English for the first time in elementary schools and two teachers who regularly taught English for communication. Data were collected through interviews and grammar assignments to assess their explicit grammar knowledge as well as their level of language proficiency. The results of the study showed that there was a tendency to associate explicit grammar knowledge and English proficiency. However, explicit grammatical knowledge is not the main determinant of proficiency level. In contrast, proficiency is more influenced by a combination of factors, such as individual preferences and study habits. Students who engage in implicit learning activities, such as regular communication and exposure to language in context, show higher levels of fluency than students who rely on explicit grammar instruction. Nonetheless, explicit grammatical knowledge remains important, especially in academic contexts that demand accurate and formal use of language. An approach that consciously integrates explicit grammar instruction is recommended to support skill development, especially in academic writing. In this way, implicit learning can improve fluency, while explicit learning favors accuracy and formal structure. In conclusion, combining explicit and implicit grammar knowledge into a balanced approach can improve overall fluency and accuracy. Teachers are advised to incorporate explicit grammar instruction into a context-based curriculum that supports immersive learning to optimize student language development.

Abstract

Abstract

The advancement of technology has transformed education, providing opportunities for innovative learning methods. This study aims to develop an Android-based mobile application to support the learning of procedure texts for Grade X students at MA Assa’adah, aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum. Current teaching practices still rely on conventional methods, such as textbooks and manual translation using Google Translate. These approaches often limit vocabulary development and hinder students from achieving the expected competency standards (KKM). To address these challenges, the proposed application integrates procedure text materials with multimedia features, including images and audio, to enhance interactivity, engagement, and motivation in learning. The research employs the Research and Development (R&D) approach, following the PLOMP model. Data were gathered through questionnaires administered to students and interviews with the teacher. The findings indicate that the developed mobile application serves as an innovative and accessible tool, improving students’ comprehension of procedure texts and supporting English language learning. Teacher observations confirmed increased student motivation and participation during lessons.

Abstract

Students nowadays are no longer enjoy reading printed books. They mostly read from their mobile phone or computers' screens. Teachers need to encourage students to read and comprehend texts. Teachers should adopt and adapt technology in teaching reading comprehension to students in light of the rapidly changing existence of technology. The purpose of this research is to develop appropriate media for learning reading. This research has employed Research and Development design based on ADDIE model. This model is used for media development by requiring 5 stages, namely: 1) Analysis, 2) Design, 3) Development, 4) Implementation, and 5) Evaluation. The research subjects are the tenth graders and the English teacher. Both the media and language experts validated the developed product. The instruments used in the needs analysis are questionnaires for the students and interviews with the English teacher. The final result is in the form of a mobile application that suits the needs of teachers and students. This media consists of 63 slides. The size of this mobile application is 52 Mb. The developed application consists of three main menus and eleven sub-menus. They are the intro page, loading section, menu page, materials page, core competence page, vocabulary building page, learning summary page, exercise page, glossary page, verb form page, user’s guide page, lesson plan page, description of the product page, and exit page. The result of this research could be seen in the enthusiasm, development, and students’ interest in mobile application media. Therefore, it is recommended for teachers to use mobile applications in teaching reading and for other developers to develop applications for the learning process.
