Abstract

This paper answers the question of how the construction of the meaning of the Peusijuek tradition is available in Aceh culture. Two important things that will support this thesis is how the mind and culture of Islam and Aceh combined into one formulated in a way. Therefore, how the processes, forms and philosophical meanings of the Peusijuek tradition available in Aceh culture will be discussed in this paper. The results of this study indicate that the Peusijuek tradition is one of the relics of Hindu Culture in Aceh. According to historical records, the implementation of the Peusijuek tradition before the sending of Islam still uses certain mantras and prayers. However, since the arrival and development of Islam in Aceh, the Peusijuek tradition has been changed by incorporating Islamic teachings in it, such as prayer, prayer, and other Islamic teachings. That is why the Peusijuek tradition in Aceh can still be up to now. In practice, the Peusijuek tradition is carried out by religious leaders and elders of Aceh, such as ulama, tengku, ustadz and ustadzah. This is done because the Peusijuek tradition is considered a sacred Acehnese procession. The practice of Peusijuek tradition in Aceh is carried out in religious and cultural activities, such as performing pilgrimage, marriage, circumcision, prayer, arena, buying new vehicles, and so forth. The purpose of this Peusijuek tradition is to appeal for the satisfaction, peace, happiness, and glory of the guests.

Abstract

This article examines changes Surakarta face in the early twentieth century. Surakarta was originally an Indis city, since the beginning of the century it progressed toward a colonial city. Based on the Dutch official reports in Surakarta, contemporary newspapers, and secondary sources, the city changes began with increasing number of Dutch female immigrants who came and settled at the city. They established nuclear families via marriage with fellow Dutchmen, so that the Dutch European community at Surakarta became stronger and more established. It was strengthened the government's confidence to intervene financial affairs in Javanese palaces and overhaul traditional structures by government reorganization and agrarian affairs. The government also implemented canonization policy in law, education, and culture. This policy was originally intended to implements European values in the Indies. However, in the policy development turned out to spawned a colonial society that was soon followed by the erosion of the city identity as Indis. The canonization policy also impacted on the changing patterns of intercommunity relations manifested in various discriminatory practices at various domains, that harassed and degraded the Indo community, especially the indigenous community. Both of them then rediscovered their identity order.

Abstract

Benchmarks for ideality for the body that prioritize aspects of physical appearance as well as social demands of the Sasak people who determine women should be able to nyesek or make sesek cloth as a source of value and meaning to the body. This article aims to examine the centrality of the body to explain how the discourse of nyesek is used as a benchmark of female maturity and as a standardization of the ideal wife in the Sasak tribe. This research tries to identify various traditional discourses in the Sasak tribe and study how these discourses function to discipline women. This study also tries to see the views of Sasak women, both the older generation and the younger generation, about the concept of nyesek. This research applies a qualitative descriptive approach. Data obtained through interviews with Sasak women in the range (18-80s). Since most sesek weavers are elderly who can only use the Sasak language, interpreting it into Indonesian requires an interview with a young Sasak tribe. This research seeks to show that the ability of nyesek to be learned by Sasak women not only serves to preserve tradition, but also to encourage women to have an economic role in the family. That is because most of the respondents interviewed were farmers' wives, nyesek was considered as an additional family income, even though its contribution was still small. This research is important because there are still many Sasak women who are not aware of the existence of body control through the discourse contained in the nyesek tradition.
