Abstract

Grebeg Sudiro celebration in Surakarta represents a harmonious coexistence between the Javanese and Chinese communities, born of a post-conflict collective consciousness. This study aims to uncover the symbolic meaning and cultural negotiation process through the Lontong Cap Go Meh culinary dish as a means of fostering intercultural harmony. This study uses a qualitative method with a cultural approach to analyze various cross-disciplinary literature data through the framework of Ernest E. Boesch's Symbolic Action Theory. The results show that Lontong Cap Go Meh is not simply a consumer product, but rather a symbolic act that represents acculturation through the adaptation of local ingredients, cooking techniques, and an inclusive presentation philosophy. This culinary dish functions as a medium of negotiation that dissolves ethnic boundaries and becomes a non-verbal communication language to rebuild the image of the Chinese community in public spaces. The conclusion of the study confirms that Lontong Cap Go Meh serves as a symbol of openness that actively communicates messages of harmony and social integration for a more stable future for a multicultural society in Surakarta.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of TikTok media utilization on high school students’ historical thinking skills in history learning based on the Merdeka Curriculum. Historical thinking skills were measured through three components adapted from Seixas’ model, namely historical significance, continuity and change, and historical perspective. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The participants consisted of 63 tenth-grade students at SMA Batik 1 Surakarta selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using historical thinking skill tests administered before and after the treatment and were analyzed to identify differences between the experimental and control groups. The results indicate that the use of TikTok media has a positive effect on improving students’ historical thinking skills. TikTok encourages student engagement, facilitates the understanding of historical concepts, and promotes critical analysis of past events. Therefore, TikTok can serve as an effective alternative medium for history learning within the Merdeka Curriculum when content is systematically designed and aligned with appropriate pedagogical principles.

Abstract

Infrastructure development during the New Order era served as one of the state’s instruments for driving economic growth and social transformation. One such strategic project was the construction of the Gajah Mungkur Reservoir in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java. This study aims to analyse the background to the construction of the Gajah Mungkur Reservoir and its impact on the socio-economic development of the Wonogiri community from the perspective of state-led development. The research employs a historical method with a qualitative approach through four stages: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. The research sources consist of government archives, development reports, statistical data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), contemporary newspapers, as well as various secondary sources in the form of relevant books and academic articles. The research findings indicate that the construction of the Gajah Mungkur Reservoir was not only driven by the need for water resource management and flood control, but also formed part of the state’s development strategy to address structural issues in Wonogiri, such as low agricultural productivity, limited water resources, poverty, and high labour out-migration. The existence of the reservoir has brought about socio-economic changes, including increased irrigation-based agricultural productivity, the emergence of new economic sectors such as fisheries and tourism, and rising community incomes. On the other hand, it has led to social changes in the form of population relocation and changes to people’s livelihoods. It can therefore be concluded that the construction of the Gajah Mungkur Reservoir has had an impact on the socio-economic sector of the Wonogiri community.

Abstract

This study examines the adaptation strategies adopted by smallholder tobacco farmers in Bojonegoro in response to climate variability and the economic pressures of the 1997–1998 economic crisis during 1996–2000. It addresses the limited historical research on the interaction between climate variability and economic crises in shaping tobacco farming. Using a historical method with a socio-economic approach, the study applied heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were obtained from statistical archives of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), archives of the Indonesian Sweetener and Fiber Crops Research Institute (Balittas), and interviews with tobacco farmers in Bojonegoro. The findings show that the 1997 El Nino, the 1998–2000 La Nina phenomena, and rising production costs during the economic crisis created significant challenges for tobacco farming. Farmers responded by selecting productive land, adjusting cultivated areas, and diversifying crops according to seasonal conditions and economic constraints. These strategies reduced production risks and supported household livelihoods. The study concludes that the sustainability of tobacco farming in Bojonegoro was largely determined by farmers' adaptive capacity in responding to environmental and economic change.

Abstract

Abstract: This study examines the negation of the Laweyan batik community during the Pajang and Mataram periods. It addresses two questions: why the Laweyan batik industry was negated and how such negation was expressed. The research employs the historical method, including source collection, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, and uses Ernst E. Boesch’s symbolic action approach to analyze the intentions, procedures, goals, and situational context of historical actors. The findings show that the negation of the Laweyan batik community was closely related to the inability of Laweyan batik entrepreneurs to maintain harmonious relations with political authorities after the era of Ki Ageng Henis. This negation appeared in two main forms. First, it was expressed in folklore derived from traditional historiography, which portrayed Laweyan as socially improper, unlucky, and morally suspect. Second, it was reflected in rulers’ policies, particularly the tomb politics surrounding Ki Ageng Henis in Kotagede and the promotion of Kauman batik as a palace-centered alternative. These policies symbolically distanced royal authority from the commercial batik tradition associated with Laweyan. This study argues that the negation of Laweyan was not merely cultural prejudice, but also a political and symbolic strategy to preserve aristocratic identity and authority. It contributes to the socio-cultural history of batik by showing how power, memory, and symbolism shaped the historical marginalization of a local craft community.

Abstract

The 1965 Tragedy left survivors facing prolonged discrimination and limited opportunities to voice their experiences, aspirations, and demands. In this context, Palawa Magazine emerged as a community-based publication that sought to advocate for victims and preserve their collective memory. This study aims to analyze the background of the publication of Palawa Magazine by the Surakarta Joint Secretariat '65 (Sekber '65) and to examine its role as a medium of advocacy for the victims of the 1965 Tragedy. This study employs historical method encompassing heuristics, source verification, interpretation, and historiography, to reconstruct and interpret the publication of Palawa Magazine as an advocacy medium for the victims of the 1965 Tragedy. The findings reveal that Palawa Magazine was published in response to the limited space available for victims of the 1965 Tragedy to express their experiences, aspirations, and demands. As an advocacy medium, the magazine functions as a communication platform for survivors and the wider public, an educational resource on history and human rights, a means of shaping collective memory, and a medium advocating for recognition, the restoration of rights, and reconciliation for the victims of the 1965 Tragedy. Through its various sections and news coverage, Palawa Magazine contributes to raising public awareness of the importance of addressing past human rights violations and preserving the collective memory of the 1965 Tragedy. In conclusion, Palawa Magazine functioned not only as a medium for disseminating information but also as an advocacy instrument that amplified survivors' voices, strengthened collective memory, promoted public history, and encouraged a more inclusive dialogue on justice and the resolution of past human rights violations in Indonesia.
