Abstract

Technological advancements, including the development of smartphones, have both positive and negative impacts on human life. Excessive use of smartphones among children, especially elementary school students, can hinder their communication development. This study aims to examine teachers' interpersonal communication strategies in addressing the negative impacts of smartphone use on the communication development of 6th-grade students at SDN 04 Batipuah Baruah, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and documentation. The results show that effective interpersonal communication between teachers and students can mitigate the negative impacts of smartphone use and support students' communication development. The strategies implemented include individual approaches, monitoring smartphone usage, and wise integration of technology into the learning process. Teachers use various techniques to interact directly with students, build closer relationships, and understand their needs and difficulties. Additionally, teachers provide guidance and direction on the appropriate and healthy use of smartphones. Technology integration in learning is carried out carefully so that students can utilize smartphones as learning tools without neglecting the aspects of interpersonal communication. This study provides significant contributions to the field of education by offering practical solutions to overcome the negative impacts of technology on children.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis penerapan strategi komunikasi interpersonal pengasuh dalam membentuk kemandirian anak asuh usia middle childhood di Panti Asuhan Muhammadiyah, Kecamatan Kuranji, Kota Padang. Tantangan utama yang dihadapi pengasuh adalah keterbatasan waktu dan banyaknya anak asuh. Penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif ini menyoroti peran komunikasi interpersonal, terutama aspek keterbukaan, empati, dan dukungan, dalam mendukung pengembangan kemandirian anak. Komunikasi searah efektif dalam memberi arahan, sedangkan komunikasi dua arah membuka ruang dialog dan umpan balik. Komunikasi banyak arah menciptakan lingkungan interaktif antara pengasuh dan anak-anak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan humanistik dalam komunikasi interpersonal memiliki pengaruh signifikan terhadap kemandirian anak. Namun, terdapat kesenjangan antara teori dan praktik, khususnya dalam penerapan keterbukaan yang masih menjadi tantangan dalam membentuk kemandirian anak asuh. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan penguatan strategi komunikasi interpersonal yang lebih intensif dan adaptif, mencakup ketiga bentuk komunikasi tersebut, untuk lebih mendukung perkembangan kemandirian anak asuh di panti asuhan.

Abstract

This final project is based on the author's project during a social campaign titled "Social Campaign to Change the Behavior of Dharma Andalas University Students Towards Plastic Bottle Waste on Instagram." The issue of plastic bottle waste is an urgent environmental concern. Universities, as centers of education, play a vital role in shaping environmentally conscious student behavior. This social campaign aims to raise awareness among Dharma Andalas University students about the negative impacts of plastic bottle waste and encourage behavioral change towards using tumblers as a more environmentally friendly alternative. This campaign utilizes a visual communication approach through the TikTok and Instagram platforms. The author served as the creator of 1-minute advertising videos, encompassing the processes of filming and editing, designing banners and brochures, and actively participating in campaign activities for 60 days, from December 15th to February 15th. The campaign successfully increased student understanding of the plastic bottle waste issue and shifted their attitudes towards single-use plastic bottles, transitioning them to using tumblers. Challenges the author faced during the project included aligning creative ideas with the campaign's objectives and target audience. Production obstacles included limited resources, inadequate equipment, and tight schedules. Additionally, the editing process was time-consuming with repeated revisions. The process of synchronizing the voices of Mutiara and Rani in the conversation at 0:27-0:40 was particularly challenging to ensure accurate lip-sync. Once the video was completed, the next challenge was gaining viewership, especially among Dharma Andalas University students who may not all be connected through social media across different departments. After uploading, the advertisement video had to compete with thousands of other content pieces on the social media platforms.

Abstract

Plastic waste, especially single use plastic beverage bottles, poses a significant challenge in environmental conservation efforts. This study aims to design and implement a social campaign to change the attitudes od Dharma Andalas University students towards the use single use plastic bottles through the circular economy concept. The methods used in this campaign include distributing brochures, installing banners, interpersonal communication, focus discussion group (FGD), and creating educational content on social medi instagram. Tthe evaluation results show that the campaign successfully increased students awareness of the negative environmental impacts of plastic bottle waste. As many as 85,7% of students stated that this campaign had a significant influence on their behavior change in reducing the use of single use plastic bottles and switching to reusable water bottles (tumbler). This social campaign demonstrates that effective communication strategies can drive environmental friendly attitude and behavior changes among university students.

Abstract

In today's increasingly developing digital and social media era, the role of influencers in social media advertising is becoming increasingly important. Many parties, both individuals, companies and other agencies use the services of influencers in their social media ads. This is inseparable from their ability to influence the opinions and even behavior of their followers, including in the context of purchasing decisions and using services. In West Sumatra itself, there are quite a lot of social media ads that use the services of influencers in social media ads. One of the influencer figures that is used quite often is Verio Hasferi or better known as Uda Rio. Uda Rio is one of the Content Creators who has many followers on his various social media accounts. This study explains how the motive for the use of Influencers in social media advertising in West Sumatra by taking a case study on the use of Uda Rio as an Influencer in social media advertising using the concept approach of the communicator condition theory which includes aspects of credibility, attractiveness and strength. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The determination of informants in this study uses a purposive mechanism by setting informant criteria. The data collection techniques used in this study are in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis in this study uses Miles and Huberman analysis techniques, namely data codification, data presentation, and conclusion / verification. The result of this study is that the motive for using Uda Rio as an influencer in social media advertising in West Sumatra is based on credibility and attractiveness factors. The attraction factor is the main and most dominant consideration used as a reason for choosing influencers.

Abstract

The process of creating a short video as a promotional medium requires creativity and a deep understanding of the target audience. Every element in the video, from narration, visuals, music, to message delivery, must be well designed in order to create a deep impression and arouse the interest of prospective students. This project aims to explore and apply a semiotic approach to the creation of a short video, focusing on analyzing the signs and meanings contained in audiovisual content. Semiotics is the basis for understanding how symbols, colors, camera movements, and other visual elements can shape perceptions and improve communication effectiveness in promotional videos. By understanding the semiotic aspects, this video production is expected to be able to convey a deeper and more meaningful message, thus not only attracting attention but also building a strong image for the study program. Cinematography is the art and science of capturing and combining moving images to convey ideas, stories or visual experiences to an audience. The term comes from the Greek kinema, meaning movement, and graphein, meaning to write or record. Thus, cinematography literally means “writing with movement.” The cinematography techniques applied in this video production, such as angle selection, lighting, and camera movement, play an important role in creating interesting and informative visuals. As a cameraman, the main role in this process is to ensure that every visual element displayed can support the delivery of the message optimally. With the proper application of cinematography techniques, such as the selection of appropriate angles, aesthetically pleasing image composition, and mood-supporting lighting, this video successfully presents professional and attractive visuals. In addition, the use of various shooting techniques, such as tracking shots to capture the dynamics of student activities as well as high angles and close-ups to highlight supporting facilities, contributed to enriching the visual appearance. After going through all stages of production, the resulting promotional video is able to represent the identity, values, and advantages of the Dharma Andalas University Communication Studies Program well. This video is not only a promotional tool, but also an effective communication medium in building institutional branding and increasing attractiveness for prospective students. With a combination of a strong visual strategy and the right communication approach, it is hoped that this video can have a positive impact in strengthening the academic image and attracting more students to join this study program.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of interpersonal communication in helping class XI high school students at SMA N 12 Padang to return to socializing after experiencing Toxic Friendship. Toxic Friendship is an unhealthy friendship, which is characterized by manipulation, betrayal, excessive jealousy towards friends, and unhealthy competition. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods and in-depth interviews to understand students' experiences, communication patterns and adaptation strategies in overcoming the psychological and social impacts of facing Toxic Friendship. The research results show that students who have experienced toxic friendships tend to experience emotional obstacles, such as lack of self-confidence, excessive anxiety in friendships and social isolation. However, interpersonal communication skills, such as self- reflection, developing empathy, and openness to felt emotions, as well as building self- confidence, will be able to help the recovery process after experiencing a bad friendship.

Abstract

This final project discusses the optimization of the use of visual effects in the promotional video of the Dharma Andalas University Communication Studies Program to clarify the narrative conveyed. Along with the development of technology and digital media, short videos have become an effective communication tool in conveying information to audiences in a fast and interesting way. Visual effects have an important role in increasing visual appeal, clarifying messages, and strengthening the identity of the study program in an effort to attract prospective students. This final project uses an audiovisual production method that includes three main stages, namely pre-production, production, and post-production. In the pre-production stage, concept planning, script drafting, and storyboarding were carried out. The production stage involves shooting in accordance with the visual needs that have been designed. Meanwhile, in the post-production stage, the editing process is carried out by applying various visual effects techniques, such as transitions, motion graphics, and color grading to improve visual quality and support the delivery of a clearer and more interesting narrative. The final project show that the optimal application of visual effects can increase the audience's understanding of the message conveyed in promotional videos. In addition, the use of appropriate editing techniques also contributes to creating a more interactive and informative video. Thus, this research is expected to be a reference in the development of visual communication strategies, especially in the field of education promotion through digital media.

Abstract

In accordance with the lecturers’ obligations in the Odd Semester of the 2024/2025 academic year as part of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, one of the activities carried out was a Community Service Program entitled: “Self-Awareness: Becoming the Best Version of Yourself Through Self-Discovery” (a seminar held at Aisyiyah Orphanage, Padang). This activity served as both a responsibility in implementing the Tri Dharma and a social contribution from UNIDHA lecturers to the community. One important societal group that requires special attention is children in orphanages who are undergoing identity development. Many of them grow up in pressured environments and lack a proper understanding of themselves and the importance of mental health. Therefore, it is essential to provide early education on self-awareness and emotional regulation. The ability to recognize personal potential, understand emotions, and develop healthy interpersonal communication can help these children grow into more confident and resilient individuals. In this program, the UNIDHA team of lecturers provided training and guidance on self-reflection, mental strength, and empathic communication. Using methods such as lectures, interactive discussions, and simulations, participants were guided to formulate personal growth steps with a positive impact on themselves and their surroundings.Keywords: Self-awareness, Mental Health, Self-Reflection, Empathic Communication, Orphanage

Abstract

This final project is compiled based on the author's experience during the production activities of making a film entitled "Between Coffee and Thesis". During the pre-production and shooting process, the author served as the main actor. The main actor's task is to play a role as a character or figure that matches the expectations of the story of a film. The main actor must be able to understand the character in depth, including the background, motivation, and emotions involved. In addition, the actor must also be able to adapt to different roles and understand the director's direction. This film production activity aims to improve the author's ability to communicate, increase relationships and be able to apply the knowledge learned during college so that they get a picture of the world of work later. During the film production activities, the author has observed and felt for himself how important the process is in playing a role in a film, especially as the main actor who needs maximum results so that it becomes one of the factors for the success of a film. Starting from character development, paying attention to acting skills to understanding what needs are needed so that the character is successfully played from all aspects. So in its application, good communication is needed between the actor and the team so that good cooperation is established. Interpersonal communication theory is the process of sending and receiving messages with the aim of getting feedback and reactions so that the message to be conveyed can influence behavior between two or more people. So that the role of the main actor has a very important essence in the production of a film.
