Abstract

This study reported on an analysis of the transcript of the students? conversation. It highlighted the way in which the transcript was analyzed qualitatively on the issue of clause complexity based on the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). In detail, this study demonstrated the clause complexity of the transcript of the students? conversation which was related to, for example, inter-clausal relations (logico-semantic relation), coordination (parataxis) and subordination (hypotaxis) as mainly outlined by Halliday (1994), Halliday & Matthiessen (2004) and Eggins (2004). The results of the analyses indicated that the students showed a positive trend of developments in the use of semantic relations in their conversation. The students produced clause complexes (37.71%) less than clause simplexes (62.29%), In the syntactic dimension, the students produced hypotaxis (50.65%) more than parataxis (49.35%). In hypotaxis, the students produced expansion (92.31%) more than projection (7.69%). It also occurred in parataxis where students also produced expansion (92.11%) more than projection (7.89%). In the logico-semantic dimension, students produced expansion (92.47%) more than projection (7.53%). In the case of projection, locution (57.14%) was produced more than idea (42.86%). In addition, in the case of expansion, elaboration (40.70%) was the most frequently used by the students rather than both of extension (34.88%) and enhancement (24.42%).

Abstract

To This study aims to reveal the translation strategy used by Tiffany Tsao in rendering of CSIs in the novel “Paper Boats” by Dewi Lestari based on Baker's theory. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The data consist of lingual units, in the form of words or phrases, which contain culture-specific items. The source of data is taken from “Paper Boats” novel by Dewi Lestari that translated by Tiffany Tsao. The data were collected through observation and by taking notes and analyzed using the equivalent and referential methods. The findings show that there are six translation strategies used by Tiffani Tsao in rendering CSIs in Dewi Lestari's paper boats novel. Superordinate (translation by a more general word) becomes the most dominant translation strategies in rendering CSIs in this novel followed by translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation, translation by cultural substitution, translation by paraphrase using related words, translation by paraphrase using unrelated words and translation by omission.

Abstract

Mastering the ability to read the Qur'an is an obligation for every Muslim. However, many Quranic learning models are not able to make students proficient in reading the Qur'an and able to practice it in everyday life. This study aims to provide an overview of the impact of learning the Qur'an using the Tilawati method accompanied by a strategy of reward and punishment, evaluation, and collaboration between students on the independence of learning the Qur'an at a madrasatul Quran in South Kalimantan. This research is based on a qualitative method with a case study type. The data of this study were obtained from student observation and validation through interviews with teaching teachers. The results of the study stated that the use of the Tilawati method plus several combination strategies was able to increase students' independence. Students also become more confident and work well with other students during the learning process. Thus, the Tilawati method has great potential to be applied in every Madrasatul Quran.

Abstract

The context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, teacher’s talk is crucial to control classroom interactions and enhance language learning. This qualitative case study investigated how seventh-grade female students were motivated to learn English as a result of their teacher’s talk. The study used the Flanders Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS) to classify teacher’s talk through classroom observations and interviews. The results revealed that giving instructions, asking questions, and expressing encouragement or praise were the most common ways teachers communicated. Students’ motivation and engagement were greatly enhanced by these verbal techniques. On the other hand, engagement was often hampered by the lack of student-centered discourse, such as accepting students’ opinions or using harsh criticism. A key novelty of this study is the exploration of gender dynamics, specifically how a male teacher communicates with an all-female class in an Islamic educational setting, a context rarely examined in prior research. The study highlights the importance of teacher communication strategies in fostering a supportive and motivating EFL classroom environment.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of STEM-based Nanolearning implementation in improving students' critical thinking skills at SMAIT Al-Fityan Kubu Raya. This study used a one-group pre-test-post-test quasi-experimental research design. The population in this study consisted of 59 people. The sample selection for this study was carried out using purposive sampling, specifically targeting 19 students from class XI Ikhwan at SMA IT Al-Fityan Kubu Raya. The data collection technique used was a critical thinking skills test, which includes four indicators: interpretation, evaluation, analysis, and explanation. The results of the pretest research obtained at 35.53 were categorized as low and the posttest obtained at 82.89. Data analysis was conducted using normality test pretest sig 0.062 and posttest 0.070 normally distributed, hypothesis test obtained sig 0.00 <0.05, H1 accepted, and effectiveness test resulted in N-gain value of 0.75. This shows that Nanolearning has a significant effect on critical thinking skills of class XI Ikhwan SMA IT Al - Fityan Kubu Raya.

Abstract

This study explores how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners experience and make sense of their interactions with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to develop speaking proficiency. Using a narrative inquiry approach, in-depth interviews and reflective journals were collected from 12 learners who regularly used ChatGPT, ELSA Speak, Duolingo, and MySpeaker Rhetorich. Grounded in Sociocultural Theory and Swain’s Output Hypothesis, the analysis examined how AI mediated learners’ cognitive and affective engagement within their Zones of Proximal Development. Findings revealed that AI tools created psychologically safe spaces, reduced speaking anxiety, and provided immediate, precise feedback, fostering greater fluency, accuracy, and learner autonomy. Learners valued AI’s personalization and accessibility but also noted limitations in cultural nuance, humor, and emotional depth, positioning AI as a supplement rather than a substitute for human interaction. This study offers qualitative insights into the affective and social dimensions of AI-mediated speaking practice, highlighting strategies for integrating AI into EFL pedagogy to support both linguistic development and emotional readiness for communication.

Abstract

This study investigates ChatGPT’s capacity to address fossilized grammatical errors in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ academic writing. Through a mixed-methods design, a controlled corpus of 500 hypothetical sentences containing persistent error types, such as verb tenses, articles, prepositions, and non-idiomatic expressions, was submitted to ChatGPT-4. Quantitative analysis evaluated correction accuracy using standard metrics (precision, recall, F-score), while qualitative content analysis assessed the pedagogical appropriateness and consistency of ChatGPT’s feedback. Results showed high accuracy in correcting rule-based structures (e.g., subject-verb agreement), but significantly lower performance for context-sensitive and fossilized errors. While ChatGPT often provided clear corrections, its feedback frequently lacked explanatory depth, contextual sensitivity, and scaffolding necessary for promoting learner noticing and long-term acquisition. These findings suggest that although ChatGPT can effectively support surface-level proofreading, it cannot fully substitute the role of human instructors in addressing deeply ingrained L2 errors. The study emphasizes the importance of explainable AI, AI literacy, and hybrid instructional models that combine technological efficiency with pedagogical intentionality. It offers implications for educators, curriculum developers, and AI tool designers seeking to integrate language models into second language acquisition contexts.
