Abstract

This study examined the utilization of the Quizlet platform for vocabulary instruction and assessed students' impressions of its application in an Indonesian EFL classroom. The research utilized a descriptive qualitative design and was conducted out at SMA Budi Utomo Medan over a duration of four weeks. The participants included 27 EFL students and one English teacher, chosen by purposive sampling. Data were gathered via classroom observations, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicated that Quizlet was methodically utilized as a primary instructional resource. The teacher employed many Quizlet features, such as flashcards, matching activities, spelling drills, and Quizlet Live, to facilitate vocabulary acquisition. Students exhibited significant engagement and conveyed positive perception of the platform. Despite the identification of various hurdles, including initial difficulties and unreliable internet connectivity, these issues lessened over time. Overall, the study concluded that Quizlet served as an excellent tool for vocabulary instruction in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

This study studied how pre-service teachers without English training taught young learners at SD Antasari Medan, Indonesia. The qualitative descriptive study comprised six PGSD pre-service teachers who volunteered to teach English without formal English training. Classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis formed the basis for thematic analysis. The results demonstrated that teachers' general pedagogical skills helped them build pleasant learning spaces by greeting students, asking questions, motivating them, and planning Indonesian-English transitions. Teachers employed repetition, modelling, songs, pictures, gestures, and online resources to engage and instruct children. Due to their first language, pupils had problems reading, spelling, writing, and pronouncing words, and classroom management and evaluation were still poor. Transferable educational abilities helped, but they couldn't replace linguistic expertise. The study highlights the importance of focused professional development, improved instructional tools, and institutional support for primary school English teaching. The results also suggest that teacher education programs should better prepare non-English teachers for English instruction and encourage reflective practice. Comprehensive and longitudinal studies should examine non-specialist teaching's long-term consequences. Abstract

This paper explores students’ and teachers’ perceptions of gamification in English language learning and teaching at SMA Negeri 1 Sunggal, Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected from 72 students and 2 English teachers through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations. Findings showed that both students and teachers perceived gamification positively, recognizing its capacity to increase motivation, engagement, and learning effectiveness, particularly in grammar and vocabulary. Gamified tools such as Quizizz made lessons more interactive, enjoyable, and student-centered. However, challenges such as limited internet connectivity, time constraints, and teachers’ digital competence hindered effective implementation. The study concludes that gamification is most effective when supported by sufficient infrastructure, professional training, and balanced instructional design.
