Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the vocabulary material in 10th grade English books in secondary schools published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. This research was conducted by solving three problems namely; what topics are available in grade 10 English textbooks; how vocabulary topics are presented; and why vocabulary content is important to discuss. The design of this study is descriptive analysis with book instruments as data sources and English teacher interviews. The books analyzed consist of fifteen chapters, and each chapter provides vocabulary content. The results of this study were conducted with the vocabulary analysis criteria suggested by Celce Murcia and showed that the vocabulary contained in the textbook contained more vocabulary that was appropriate to the topic and learning objectives than vocabulary that did not fit the topic. and from the research that has been done, there are results that the inclusivity criteria per syllabus get the highest value, 3.8; accessibility criteria with a value of 3.5; the average value can be in the context of the criteria of suitability, the suitability of the load, and balanced distribution. The interview also showed that vocabulary is very important to discuss because, without vocabulary, students' ability to communicate cannot occur properly and correctly.

Abstract

This article describes the concept of language learning styles in the classroom and the characteristics of students for each of their learning styles in language learning. Where the purpose of this study is to describe their learning styles related to learning styles for language acquisition. There are 3 types of language learning styles described by Tekavcic and Dimovski namely the visual, auditory and touch functions of a person in processing information. The three main types of learning styles are not absolute, of course. Many students learn through various senses. Certain students may be as strong in three perceptual modalities, or in two perceptual modalities from any combination. The method of data collection in this study is observation, the results of this discussion are that we observed grade 9 students of Percut Sei Tuan Middle School very less on how to apply language learning styles they are in front of the class so that it impacts learning difficulties well.

Abstract

The purpose of this journal analysis is to train the effectiveness of English Foreign Language student practice exercises and vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. Two specific factors conditions: (a) vocabulary acquisition and retention of different exercises; (b) reading comprehension performance through different exercises. That the results revealed that the qualitative group received significant and superior practice questions and vocabulary mastery the control group who received vocabulary copying exercises on the performance of increasing students' vocabulary, reading comprehension, as well as short-term and long-term word memory retention. Positive correlation between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension are also considered. Hence, ignore that vocabulary mastery and question exercises are the more effective types of exercises for vocabulary acquisition and reading understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to describe of expressions  that used  by students contained in “When English Rings a Bell” textbook of eighth grade students. The expressions used by the  speakers to express a massage, thoughts, feelings, or opinions to other people. People must use certain expression depend on the situation. This study used qualitative research design because all the data get from words not numbers. The writers used conversation from the book as a source of the data. The result of the study shows that the expressions contained in textbook When English Rings A Bell fits with the situation, what and when they want to speak.  The kinds of expressions can be conveyed through expression in this study is how to ask and give attention.

Abstract

The purpose to be reached in conducting this study is to share information about the use of flash expressions book as instructional media to enrich vocabulary mastery in learning teaching. It is true to say that there are lots of instructional media in such a way that they can be used to deliver the materials and to understand materials. According to certain research findings done by the students of the English Department at the University of Prima Indonesia, it is suggested to use the flash expressions book as instructional media to improve the quality of learning English. Because the flash expressions book has interesting materials and can provide learning motivation for readers, the flash expressions book has 4 main topics and more than 200 expressions that will help us to speak of expressions and can  enrich our vocabulary. Based on the information above, it is clear that the use of flash expressions book can be expected to be the solution to solve the problems that  occurred in attempts to increase vocabulary mastery when learning English. The flash expressions book can be an excellent media to be used because it has many interesting expressions, easy to understand vocabulary, modern and simple

Abstract

This study's objective was for analyzing materials relevance in psychomotor and cognitive-based on 2013 English curriculum of competence in Textbook of the eighth grade of junior high school "English Rings a Bell". The methodology of this study is qualitative. Based on Anderson and Krathwol (2001) theory, The Textbook analysis consists of Simpson's and cognitive domain of taxonomy (1972) which aim to focus more on material's relevance in the textbook. The instruments for data collection used were the analysis of document and checklist observation. The study found that 23 materials consist 74.19% relevance in the cognitive domain, 7 materials consist 22.58% relevance, and 1 material only consists 3.2% relevance. While the psychomotor domain found that 10 materials consist 32.25% relevance and 11 materials consist 35.48% relevance. Therefore, the researcher concluded that in the cognitive domain, the textbook's materials are relevant to the 2013 curriculum. Although its lack of materials is relevant to the psychomotor domain.Keywords: Textbook analysis; When English Rings a Bell; 2013 curriculum; cognitive domain; psychomotor domain.

Abstract

Abstract Textbook is an important media because contains learning materials that employed learners to get knowledge through learning process. To support the learning process, the textbook should be appropriate to the 2013 curriculum. This research used content analysis. The objectives of this research are (1) to explain the topics of writing materials in Bahasa Inggris textbook (2) to explain the writing materials written in Bahasa Inggris textbook (3) to explain the relatedness between writing materials and the K13 curriculum. Here, the result of this research shows that (1) The topic of writing material is appropriate to the 2013 curriculum. (2) The form of writing tasks meet as good criteria because the textbook gave good guideline and explanation exactly in social function, text structure and language feature. (3) The writing material in Bahasa Inggris textbook is related to the English 2013 curriculum because the writing material in the textbook have implemented based on the content of the syllabus of the 2013 curriculum. This textbook is good to use because it is suitable for students in Senior High School for the twelfth grade to increase their writing skills. Abstract

A number of studies on code-mixing have been extensively researched in educational communication; but few studies have explored the practice of code-switching in preaching, which is the domain of religious communication. The study aims to describe the practice of code-mixing in delivering sermons by pastors who use traditional language (Simalungun) as a medium of delivery. The study used a descriptive qualitative research approach with a survey research design using the google form platform as a research instrument, involving sixty priests as the study participants, using the Simalungun language as a medium for delivering sermons. The results of this study reveal that the motivation to use code-mixing is very important to clarify and facilitate the delivery and understanding of the content of the sermon. The results of this study also reveal the reasons, the dominant preaching genre using code-mixing, the language used in code-mixing, the problems faced in practicing code-mixing, as well as the congregation's perception of the practice of code-mixing carried out by pastors. The results of this study provide a complete description of the practice and perception of code-mixing in sermons using the Simalungun language. Further researches on the content of preaching in Sunday sermons using different methods of analysis are suggested by the study.
