Abstract

This study examines the adaptation of Arabic language and culture in the lives of Indonesian Muslims through a qualitative anthropolinguistic approach. Arabic functions not only as a means of religious communication but also as a representation of cultural values, morals, and social identity. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews with two informants (Mr. Arjali, 48, and Mrs. Arinovita, 47), and documentation of socio-religious activities. The results show that Arabic terms such as assalamu'alaikum (peace be upon you), alhamdulillah (praise be to God), and insyaallah (God willing) have become integrated into everyday conversation as expressions of politeness, religiosity, and togetherness. Meanwhile, the adaptation of Arabic culture is evident in clothing, greetings, and religious traditions that are adapted to the local context, creating a hybrid form of Indonesian Islamic culture. This study confirms that the synergy between Arabic language and culture forms a distinctive pattern of religious communication that strengthens the polite, moderate, and contextual Islamic identity of Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the patterns and functions of Arabic–English code-mixing in Bayou’s song “Call Her Right Now” and to examine its social meanings using Michael Silverstein’s framework of indexical order. The research employs a qualitative approach, drawing on a literature review and textual analysis of the lyrics. The primary data consist of a lyric transcript verified against the audio recording, annotated for types of switching (e.g., insertion, alternation), and analyzed descriptively and interpretively based on principles of indexicality. The results show that the verses are mostly in English, which gives them a cosmopolitan style and serves narrative purposes. The chorus and post-chorus, on the other hand, are mostly in Arabic, which gives them emotional power and shows that they are authentic to the area. The inserted English phrase “call her right now” functions as a cohesive bridge and a marker of prestige. This study contributes by linking micro-linguistic findings on code-mixing in Arabic popular music to indexical order theory, thereby clarifying how linguistic elements construct hybrid identities. Further research is recommended using multimodal and ethnographic approaches (e.g., listener interviews, music video analysis, or corpus-based studies) to empirically test social reception and language-ideological dynamics

Abstract

This study aims to describe the preservation strategies and the designation process of the Niat Lima Laras Palace as a cultural heritage object at the regency level in Batu Bara Regency, North Sumatra. The palace is a historical legacy of the Kedatukan Lima Laras, built by Datuk Muhammad Yuda Sri Diraja in the early 20th century. It holds significant value as a center of Malay traditional governance and as a symbol of resistance against colonialism. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study method. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, participatory observation, documentation, and literature study, analyzed using R.M. Sedyawati’s (2007) theory of cultural preservation, which emphasizes physical, social, and functional preservation. The findings reveal that the Niat Lima Laras Palace meets three key dimensions of cultural preservation: (1) historical value, due to its connection with significant local historical events; (2) socio-cultural value, as it is still used in traditional community rituals; and (3) architectural value, as it reflects a fusion of Malay, Chinese, and European architectural styles. The designation process was carried out through the inventory of Potential Cultural Heritage Objects (ODCB), field verification by the Cultural Heritage Expert Team (TACB), and formal recognition via the Batu Bara Regent's Decree No. 406/DISPORABUDPAR/2024. This study concludes that value-based preservation strategies, community participation, and inter-institutional collaboration are key to the successful safeguarding of local cultural heritage. It recommends strengthening cultural revitalization programs, promoting local historical education, and applying adaptive preservation to ensure the sustainability of this cultural site.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Arabic as an indicator of cultural identity in the context of Islamic schools through an anthropolinguistic perspective. Starting from the phenomenon of the use of Arabic in daily interactions between teachers and students such as greetings, commands, and religious expressions this study examines how these linguistic practices reflect the values, ideologies, and social order in Islamic education. Data were obtained through observations of classroom interactions and informal communication within the school environment, then analyzed by emphasizing forms of speech such as commands, polite greetings, and student responses that are imbued with cultural meaning. The findings indicate that Arabic is not merely a means of educational communication, but also an institutional symbol that shapes religious customs, discipline, and hierarchies of power in Islamic schools. The practice of using Arabic serves as a means of reproducing Islamic values and an effort to strengthen the cultural identity of institutions in the era of educational modernization. These results contribute theoretically to the development of anthropolinguistic studies in Islamic education and provide empirical evidence of language as a cultural constructor and identity marker in the educational field.

Abstract

This study examines the framing of BRICS-related news by CNN Arabic during the 2023–2024 period amid the bloc’s increasing role in global economic and geopolitical dynamics. This research is significant because the media play a strategic role in shaping public perception in the Arab region regarding shifts in international power. The study aims to identify the representation of BRICS in CNN Arabic’s news discourse using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model, which includes macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method through library research by analyzing CNN Arabic news texts related to global economic issues, political statements, and the expansion of BRICS membership. The findings indicate that CNN Arabic represents BRICS as an alternative global actor capable of balancing Western economic dominance, as reflected through lexical choices and discourse structures that emphasize cooperation, stability, and strategic influence. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on the representation of BRICS in Arab media, which remains relatively underexplored. These findings imply the importance of more critical and balanced media policies in presenting global geopolitical issues.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of Balāghah styles, specifically tauriyah and husnu al-ta‘līl, in Surah Al-Wāqi‘ah. These two rhetorical devices are part of classical Arabic linguistic aesthetics that function to enhance meaning, deepen the message, and provide an artistic effect in the expression of Qur’anic verses. The research employs a qualitative-descriptive method through library research by examining classical Balāghah texts, tafsīr works, and relevant linguistic sources. The results indicate that Surah Al-Wāqi‘ah contains several instances of tauriyah, in which a word carries both a near (literal) and far (intended) meaning, enriching the interpretive depth of the verses. Additionally, forms of husnu al-ta‘līl are also identified, serving to beautify the reasoning or explanation within the context of the descriptions of the Day of Judgment and the conditions of humankind thereafter. The analysis concludes that the use of these two Balāghah devices not only enhances the literary beauty of the surah but also strengthens its theological and spiritual messages.
