Abstract

Dalam pembelajaran, guru memiliki tugas untuk merancang pembelajaran pembelajaran, melaksanakan pembelajaran, dan mengevaluasi pembelajaran yang telah dilaksanakannya. Untuk dapat melakukan tugas tersebut guru harus memiliki kompetensi yang berkaitan hal-hal tersebut. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini  bertujuan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan guru Bahasa Inggris SMP dalam menulis butir soal yang berbasis teks Inggris dari segi bahasa dan meningkatkan kemampuan guru Bahasa Inggris SMP dalam menulis butir soal yang berbasis teks Inggris yang memenuhi construct validity. Metode yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan pengabdian yang berupa pelatihan penulisan soal Bahasa Inggris berbasis teks ini meliputi: (1) ceramah yang diikuti dengan diskusi antara instruktur dengan peserta, dan peserta dengan peserta; (2) pemberian contoh dan analisis; (3) praktik membuat soal tes berbasis teks secara kelompok; (4) pemberian umpan balik dan diskusi  hasil praktik membuat soal tes berbasis teks; dan (5) pemberian tugas membuat soal tes berbasis teks secara individu. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan ini telah mencapai sasaran yaitu dapat memberi pengetahuan dan wawasan kepada para guru peserta pelatihan tentang assessment planning, assessment of reading, assessment of listening, assessment of speaking, dan assessment of writing yang dapat dilihat dari hasil pre-test dan post-test. Para peserta pelatihan antusias dalam mengikuti setiap pemaparan materi yang diberikan oleh narasumber. Berdasarkan hasil interview dengan para peserta pelatihan terlihat bahwa pemahaman mereka tentang materi pelatihan juga meningkat. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa para guru peserta pelatihan ini merasakan manfaat yang besar setelah mengikuti pelatihan ini. Kata kunci: butir soal, teks, guru Bahasa Inggris, assessmentIn teaching learning process, it is a must for teachers to design, implement, and evaluate the process. To be able to perform the responsibility, they are required to have a competence related to the matters. This community service was aimed at improving the ability of English teachers of junior high school in writing text-based question items correctly and appropriately in terms of linguistics and construct validity. It was conducted through (1) lecture and discussion; (2) example of analysis; (3) practice of making text-based test questions; (4) feedback; (5) task of constructing text-based test questions. It could be concluded that the aims of this activity were successfully achieved in terms of insight and knowledge transfers to the participants on assessment planning, assessment of reading, assessment of listening, assessment of speaking, and assessment of writing which could be seen from the results of their pre-test and post-test. The participants were enthusiastic in following each part of this activity. Based on the interviews with the participants, they stated that their understanding also increased. Thus, it can be concluded that the teacher participants obtained great benefits after attending this activity. Keywords: question items, text, English teachers, assessment

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to elucidate a comprehensive perspective on translanguaging practices in EFL classrooms in Indonesia by reviewing empirical literature published in scientific journals and/or proceedings focusing on four primary areas, which include: (1) research methodology, (2) advantages and disadvantages of translanguaging, (3) languages used when translanguaging, and (4) perceptions and attitudes toward translanguaging. The findings indicate all of the studies under review were conducted through a qualitative approach with the instruments of observations, interviews, and questionnaire. Teachers and students have the benefit of translanguaging practices in EFL classrooms, yet it should be taken into account that L1 should be adopted judiciously. They translanguage using English, Indonesian, and local languages and even foreign languages other than English. They have voiced their agreement to the implementation of translanguaging as pedagogy since it positively impacts EFL teaching and learning. However, few teachers have contrasting views about this voice. Suggestions for future research on translanguaging are also discussed.

Abstract

Abstract. This community service was carried out through a training entitled TOEFL-Like Test Training for High School Students of SMAN 4 Bandar Lampung. This activity was aimed at training the students to comprehend TOEFL Listening section through the implementation of discussion and question-answer methods with practices, and at providing insight to them about tips and strategies to deal with listening section of TOEFL test to increase their TOEFL score. There were 26 participants participating in the training. The procedures for dealing with the activity included a pretest, discussion on theories, practices, and a posttest as an instrument which was used to evaluate the result of the community service. The results showed that there was a difference in the students’ understanding on TOEFL-like listening section before and after the training. The pretest result showed that the maximum score for the TOEFL-like for listening section was 480, the average score was 378.5, and the minimum was 310, meanwhile the posttest result showed that the maximum score for the TOEFL-like test for listening section was 510, the average score was 433.2, and the minimum was 370. Thus, it can be said that this community service on the training of TOEFL-like Test for Listening Section conducted in SMAN 4 Bandar Lampung was successful which can be seen from the increase of the TOEFL-like for listening section scores before and after the training was held. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan melalui sebuah kegiatan yang berjudul Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris TOEFL-Like Test Siswa SMAN 4 Bandar Lampung. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk melatih keterampilan listening (mendengar dan menyimak) yang ada pada Listening Section tes TOEFL dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan metode diskusi, tanya jawab, dan praktik. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga untuk memberikan wawasan kepada para siswa mengenai cara mudah serta kiat dan tips saat menghadapi soal listening dalam TOEFL dengan tujuan dapat meningkatkan nilai TOEFL siswa. Peserta yang menjadi sasaran pelatihan ini terdiri dari 26 siswa. Prosedur kegiatan ini meliputi pemberian pre-test bagi peserta, diskusi teori dan praktik, dan pemberian post-test sebagai instrumen yang akan digunakan untuk mengevaluasi hasil kegiatan pengabdian ini. Hasil dari pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan hasil pemahaman siswa peserta pelatihan sebelum dan setelah diberikan pelatihan. Hasil pre-test menunjukkan bahwa skor maksimal untuk TOEFL-Like Listening Section siswa peserta adalah 480, skor rerata 378.5, dan skor minimal 310. Sedangkan, hasil post-test menunjukkan bahwa skor maksimal untuk TOEFL-Like Listening Section siswa peserta adalah 510, skor rerata 433.2, dan skor minimal 370. Dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan bahwa pelatihan TOEFL-Like Test Listening Section yang dilakukan di SMA Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung berhasil. Abstract

Teluk Kiluan located in Pekon (Village) Kiluan Negeri, Kelumbayan District, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung Province, has the potential to become an international class tourist destination since foreign tourists have started visiting this area. To make the interaction between foreign tourists with the local people and tourism practitioners run well, the local human resources (local people and tourism practitioners) are required to inevitably communicate in English. Therefore, the purpose of the community service was to help the local government, local people and tourism practitioners to communicate and convey information correctly to foreign tourists visiting Teluk Kiluan through a program called communicative English for tourism training. The participants of this event were the local people and tourism practitioners in Teluk Kiluan. To solve the problem faced by the local people and tourism practitioners due to lack of English for tourism mastery, some training methods were used including: (1) presentations on the importance of English as a lingua franca in the field of tourism, and (2) a workshop on communicative English for tourism through simulations, dialogues, and role playing, as well as discussions. Based on the score of each participant in the pre-test and post-test, there was an increase in the results before and after the training was carried out. They had the confidence to properly communicate and interact with foreign tourists. Besides, according to semi-structured interviews, the participants were satisfied with the event. Thus, it can be said that they derive much benefit from their participation in the training.
