Abstract

Gender differences become big problem which are still discussed by many intellectual circles. These differences exist in many life aspects such as culture, economic area, language, and art. Indonesian culture believes that woman and man have different role. Woman has lower position than man. It is shown from many songs which contain the ideology of woman’s inferiority in the society. To establish the relation between song lyrics and ideology of gender differences, critical discourse analysis is applied to identify song writer’s ideology about woman. As the result, there are four ideologies which humiliate woman’s position. It identifies woman as second part in every life aspect which means woman has lower position than man.

Abstract

Epistemology is a systemic science as a branch of philosophy about the origin of the science, the means, the method or the way to get it, the validity, and the truth of the science. When we say a word, there is an understanding between speaker and hearer that  can be analyzed by ratio, sense, and experience. Both speaker and listener respond one to each other by those means in communication. Speech act analysis as a branch of pragmatics deals with the textual meaning. Before the speaker says speech act, he/she must concern the ratio, sense, and experience to produce a speech that must be understood by his/her partner. On the other hand, the listener also uses all those means to interpret the speech. By using those means both interlocutors share the same knowledge and method to get the understanding, so the communication may run well.  Key words : epistemology, pragmatics, performative speech act

Abstract

Mispronunciation is a critical issue encountered by most young English learners in a second language learning that causes low spoken English proficiency, which plays important roles today. The objectives of this study were to identify the segmental changes resulted in the articulation of English mispronounced words produced by most young learners, to describe the different elements between Indonesian and English sound systems, and to explain the phonological interference of mother tongue in English mispronunciation. This study uses descriptive qualitative research design performed on ten primary school students selected by using purposive sampling in Semarang. Data were collected by using simak method and analyzed by using padan fonetik artikulatoris method. The data suggest that the majority of the participants had difficulty in articulating the words with absent phonemic segments /ɪ, æ, əː, ɔ, ʌ, eɪ, ʊə, ɪə, aɪə, ʃ, θ, ð, ʒ, voiced v/, silent letters <b, d, e, t, w, gh, and r in some cases>, spelling patterns <th, ow, ph, ie, ueue, ough>, and tricky words including several English borrowings that have inconsistent spelling pronunciation. The results showed that the interference of L1 sounds and pronunciation rules occurred through substitution of closest native sounds for absent phonemes, insertion of native sounds, and negative transfer of L1 spelling pronunciation. It can be concluded that most of the young learners mispronounced on words with absent phonemic segments, silent letters, spelling patterns of many letters combination, and several English borrowings.

Abstract

Final-year students should have the ability and competence to write, including in writing their thesis abstracts. Although short, abstract writing must pay attention to several things. One indicator of good writing is marked by using logical, consistent words that are easy to understand. This study aims to identify the types of cohesion (grammatical and lexical) and coherence in writing abstracts for final students of AKI University and whether they have fulfilled cohesive and coherent writing. This study analyzes 16 undergraduate thesis abstracts for the English Literature study program for the 2019-2022 and 2020-2021 academic years. This study uses qualitative and quantitative research methods to achieve this goal. The result shows that the students use lexical cohesion devices much more than grammatical ones. Unfortunately, neither substitution nor ellipsis devices were found. Even so, the students have pretty good competence in making cohesive abstracts. On the other hand, the results of the coherence analysis show that all students have a good understanding of using all aspects of coherence. But even though they use all aspects, not all students succeed in creating coherent writing wholly.
