Abstract

A lyrical analysis of Justin Bieber’s album reveals how emotional interpretation and literal meaning are intricately intertwined. Words such as ’I miss you more than life’ in particular convey a deep emotional bond that can be connoted with feelings that go beyond words, relating to memories and loss that are relevant to the listener’s experience. With an emphasis on the use of denotative and connotative meanings and the use of qualitative methods, this research examines how connotations and denotations are used in the lyrics of Justin Bieber’s song. After analyzing the data collected from the song lyrics, this study identified three positive, two neutral, and one negative connotation types. Additionally, emotional power in song lyrics conveys difficult concepts such as love, regret, and self-determination that can be found in the lyrics. This method makes music an effective medium to convey emotional experiences.

Abstract

The identity and nationalism of mixed-race individuals are frequently questioned. Therefore, this study aims to synthesize the national identity of Bryan Domani, Cinta Laura, and Aurelie Moeremans as mixed-race public figures using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. A descriptive qualitative method was used to interpret this data, wherein the researcher analyzed podcast interviews and examined Instagram posts. This study’s synthesis is divided into the background context of adapting their language skills, evaluating their cultural acceptance, and analyzing their preference for Indonesia. As a result, they experience difficulties with Indonesian proficiency due to their foreign-sounding accent. Additionally, they also demonstrate their national identity through their contribution to Indonesia.

Abstract

By revealing speakers’ meanings through ideology, this project aims to provide the gaps in critical discourse analysis abilities through critical literacy practice. Because of the power of legislators, political figures, and other text creators, language preferences can be used to oppress the broader population. Readers should be open to critically evaluating all texts to prevent the media from controlling what they read. The community may experience social chaos as a result of students’ inability to comprehend and analyse news and mass media. The ruling party’s ideology, which seeks to uphold and defend its dominance, can be examined using critical discourse analysis to identify the power of language. The research uses a case study method that gathers data through artefacts and observation. Getting an explanation of students’ responses to questions, and the artefacts they have produced that show their engagement with critical literacy as Freire’s concept are all part of the data analysis process. The conceptual framework for teaching ideology fulfils the absence of emphasising critical literacy pedagogy, such as familiarising teaching methods, picking authentic materials, observing critical discourse analysis, applying multimodality, and asking critical questions. These conceptual frameworks can be used to teach students how to read and evaluate texts so they can learn about identity, diversity, and power. Students seem to benefit from critical literacy practice as a tool for developing critical language awareness, so they are not easily provoked by the text and obverse deeper the words they read before taking action that provides possibilities for social conflict. Therefore, the objective of this research is to develop language learning tools based on critical discourse analysis, with ideology as the core of revealing the meaning of speakers that provide critical literacy awareness. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, critical literacy, ideology

Abstract

The increasing number of controversial government policies in Indonesia has sparked reactions from the public, especially on social media platforms such as X. Interestingly, high ranking officials, including the president, use taboo words in public. This study aims to identify the types of taboo words used by netizens in their criticism of the government and seek the reasons behind their use, as well as how the public views the use of taboo words in political criticism. Using a qualitative approach, this study analyzed several tweets containing taboo words. The findings show that all six categories of taboo words proposed by Wardhaugh were found in the data, along with additional types, such as insults to intelligence. The use of taboo words is often motivated by strong emotions such as anger and disappointment, and in some cases, by the belief that certain officials deserve harsh criticism. Society's response was divided: some people saw it as a legitimate form of emotional expression and resistance, while others found it inappropriate, although many normalized it. Overall, this study concludes that taboo words serve as a powerful tool for expressing disappointment and anger and suggests that future research could examine similar expressions on other platforms or in different contexts.
