Abstract

Understanding kinematic concepts is essential for students to develop a strong foundation in physics and to appreciate the basic principles of nature. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of concept cartoons in enhancing the conceptual understanding of kinematic concepts among students. This research is an experimental study using a pretest-posttest control group design with two class VII of junior high schools as samples. In both classes, learning was carried out on the topic of kinematics, where the experimental group was given treatment in the form of implementing concept cartoons embedded in worksheets and the control group only used structured worksheets with the same learning model. Based on the results of the pretest and posttest using a reasoned multiple choice objective test instrument, a normalized average gain value was obtained which shows the effectiveness of increasing students' conceptual understanding in both classes after being given treatment, with the experimental group achieving a 0.45 (medium category) normalized gain, higher than the 0.13 (low category) gain in the control group. The statistical test results of the t-test showed that there was a statistically significant difference in enhancement of students' conceptual understanding about kinematic concepts between the experimental group and control group. In addition, during the learning process, students in the experimental group appeared to be more active in discussions. By using concept cartoons, teachers can identify misconceptions experienced by studentsKeywords: Concept cartoons, conceptual understanding, kinematic concepts, misconception, worksheetsDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpf.v12.n1.202405

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between self-awareness and self-esteem with students' physics learning outcomes. Employing a quantitative correlational approach, the research was conducted at MAN 3 Bantul, Yogyakarta, during the 2023/2024 academic year, involving 93 students from class XI MIPA through a saturated sampling technique. Data collection utilized self-awareness and self-esteem scales, documentation, and interviews. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation tests, preceded by normality testing. The findings indicate a significant positive correlation between self-awareness and physics learning outcomes (r = 0.387, p = 0.000), suggesting that students with higher self-awareness tend to achieve better results, although the correlation strength is categorized as low. Similarly, self-esteem also shows a significant positive relationship with physics learning outcomes (r = 0.396, p = 0.000), indicating that increased self-esteem is associated with improved academic performance in physics. Despite the relatively low correlation values, both psychological variables contribute meaningfully to students' achievement. The study concludes that fostering self-awareness and self-esteem in the learning process is essential for enhancing students' academic success, particularly in physics education.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the critical and creative thinking skills of students as future teachers in designing integrated science learning using the Robin Fogarty model. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. This research was conducted at UIN Sunan Kalijaga from October to November 2024. The subjects of the study were lecturers and students. Data were collected from two main sources, namely primary data and secondary data. The data for this study were obtained in three ways, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis through data collection, data presentation, data conclusion/verification, and condensation process. The data that has been analyzed will be tested for validity using data triangulation. This study shows that students already have quite good critical thinking skills, but their creative thinking skills still need to be improved. Although students can analyze information, draw conclusions, and present logical arguments, they still have difficulty producing original and diverse ideas. Some of the obstacles students face include difficulty in determining the theme of integrated learning, lack of in-depth understanding of concepts, and lack of experience in designing learning. The results of this study highlight the importance of providing more intensive training to students in developing creative thinking skills and integrated learning design skills.
