Abstract

Big changes have occurred in the 21st century due to technological advances and rapid developments in various fields. The key to success in facing the challenges of the 21st century is scientific literacy, namely the ability to understand, communicate and apply scientific concepts in real life. However, in reality, practicing 21st-century skills is still rarely done because learning is teacher-centered. This research aims to improve students' scientific literacy skills through a problem-based learning model. The research was conducted in class X MS 4 with 28 students. The research was carried out in two cycles, each consisting of 4 stages: planning, implementation, observation for evaluation, and reflection. From the comparative analysis of scientific literacy abilities in cycles 1 and cycle 2, it was found that scientific literacy abilities in cycle 1 with an average score of 67 in the middle category experienced an increase in cycle 2 with an average score of 77 in the high categories. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that applying the problem-based learning model can improve students' scientific literacy abilities in physics materials.

Abstract

Local wisdom-based learning is one of the innovative approaches in science education that enhances the relevance of scientific knowledge to everyday life. One form of local wisdom that can be studied from an ethnoscientific perspective is the production of durian tempoyak in Indragiri Hilir, Riau. The fermentation process of durian tempoyak involves scientific concepts in biology and chemistry, such as microorganism activity, fermentation reactions, and changes in food's physical and chemical properties. However, research on integrating local wisdom into science education remains very limited. This study aims to analyze local wisdom in the production of durian tempoyak from a scientific perspective. Data were collected through interviews with informants selected using the snowball sampling method. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman qualitative approach. The research findings indicate that the Malay community continues to preserve the tradition of making durian tempoyak. The production process includes preparing materials and tools, fermentation stages, and its benefits in science learning. In conclusion, exploring ethnoscience in durian tempoyak production provides an opportunity to link science with local culture, particularly in biotechnology. Integrating local wisdom into science education will enhance students’ appreciation of culture and develop 21st-century skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' perceptions of the implementation of science laboratory practicums at public middle school 020 Pekanbaru and public middle school 7 Pangkalan Kuras, Riau Province. Using a quantitative survey method, this study involved 75 student respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of 26 statements, analyzed descriptively. The results show that students' perceptions of the preparation, implementation, and conclusion stages of the practicum fall into the "good" category, with urban schools having a higher percentage. In conclusion, the implementation of practicums in urban schools is better than in rural schools, bringing attention to the need for quality improvements in rural school practicums.
