Abstract

Social media is an effective communication tool for facilitating political campaign activities. However, social media promotes the enormous politicization of religion, such as the controversy surrounding the mixing of politics and religion in Indonesia's 2017 and 2019 general elections. This study aims at responding to the causes of social media supporting the consistency of the politicization of religion in the Pre-Presidential General Election 2024 by employing the politicization of religion in the past as a reflection of the current phenomenon. The research was conducted using a qualitative strategy and multimodal discourse analysis as an instrument for data analysis. Data was collected from the Twitter account @aniesbaswedan from October to December 2022 and previous studies. The research results indicate that the nuances can demonstrate indicators of the consistency of the politicization of religion through multimodal content, such as text, images, video, audio, and animation. The multimodal aspect can frame politics with an intriguing blend of religious attributes to obtain responses from netizens. Media convergence also stimulates interactive communication between netizens with others. In conclusion, politicians implement religious symbols to increase netizens' response in its campaign.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between piety, social pressure, and riya’ among urban Muslim youth in Yogyakarta who use social media to express religiousity, and the way the youth negotiate to deal with the contradiction between displayed piousness and religious norms. Employing a phenomenological approach this article explore the negotiation of ambiguity among urban Muslim youth, in particular the urban students actively involved in lecture series branded "Ngaji Filsafat" conducted by Dr. Fahruddin Faiz. This article argue that not only digital media provide space for youth to express their piety, it also offer bigger social pressure to gain social validation for their (digital) existence, in the form of likes and followers, for instance. The social pressure increases ethical ambiguity, where expressions of online piety can be considered as violating a moral principle of religiosity, namely riya’. Finally, this article contributes to debates on the intersection of religion and media, especially on the aspect of individual negotiation space in responding to biases and dilemmas arising from the hybridity of the two.

Abstract

The decline of the Muslim community in India during the 18th and 19th centuries was attributed to both internal and external factors. Internally, it was driven by the collapse of the Mughal dynasty, particularly after the death of Emperor Aurangzeb. This internal decline was also exacerbated by stagnation within the Indian Muslim community. Externally, the influence of modern Western knowledge introduced by the British played a significant role. These two factors prompted theological movements initiated by Syaikh Waliyullah ad-Dahlawi and Seyyed Ahmad Khan, both of whom aspired to uplift the Indian Muslim community from its backwardness. The efforts of these two scholars were focused on reconstructing the theological framework that had long been established among Indian Muslims. Syaikh Waliyullah ad-Dahlawi aimed to free the Muslim community from religious orthodoxy. Meanwhile, Seyyed Ahmad Khan, in addition to advancing ad-Dahlawi’s efforts, introduced fresh ideas regarding Islamic education. Seyyed Ahmad Khan successfully integrated Islam as a religion with modern education, culminating in the establishment of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College (M.O.A.C.), later known as Aligarh Muslim University. At the time, this institution became one of the largest centers of Islamic learning in Asia.

In the era of the new normal of the Covid-19 pandemic, clean and healthy living behaviors must continue to be applied to prevent the transmission of various diseases that cause illness and death. The main purpose of PHBS counseling is to create school communities who are health conscious and have the knowledge and awareness to live a life that maintains cleanliness and meets health standards. Counseling was carried out to 22 students of class VII MTs Riyadlatul Ulum who are also students of Islamic boarding schools. The counseling program started with an opening and remarks from representatives from the school, pre-test, counseling session, post-test, and the last closing and photo session. Overall, there is an increase of the average score from pre test and post test with  the rise 0.14. Abstract

Over the past decade, popular Islamic websites in Indonesia have functioned not only as platforms for da'wah but also as arenas for articulating and contesting legal and ideological discourses concerning Islam and the Constitution. This qualitative descriptive study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine digital texts from four high-traffic Islamic websites: NU Online, Islami.co, Eramuslim.com, and Voa-Islam.com, identified using Alexa (2017–2019) and SimilarWeb (2020) data. The analysis reveals two dominant discursive formations. Legal-formalist platforms such as Eramuslim.com and Voa Islam.com, influenced by the DDII network, advocate for the constitutional integration of sharia, echoing the thought of Abu A‘la al-Maududi. In contrast, substantive contextual platforms such as NU Online and Islami.co emphasize ethical compatibility between Islamic values, democracy, and Pancasila, reflecting Abdullah Saeed’s humanistic interpretation of Islamic law. The findings demonstrate that digital media are not neutral conduits but sites of ideological negotiation where Islamic authority is reconfigured through communicative performance and platform logics that reward dialogical, verifiable, and inclusive narratives. The study contributes theoretically by extending Fairclough’s CDA into the digital ecology, linking textual analysis with metrics of visibility and communicative legitimacy.
