Abstract

The research aimed to find out if the students of MTsN 2 Banda Aceh who were taught vocabulary using experiential learning got a higher score than those who were taught without experiential learning. This research was conducted using pre-experiment with one class; pre-test and post-test design. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students. The total population of this study was 114 students composed of five classes; VIII-1, VIII-2, VIII-3, and VIII-4. Every class consists of about 28 students. The sample of this research was class VIII-1 of the eighth grade because the students’ ability of this class was better than the other classes. The data were taken through the test. Then, the obtained data were analyzed by using the gain score (GS). The result of this research showed that the GS was 0.32. Meaning that there was a difference between the students’ ability in mastering vocabulary before and after teaching using experiential learning and the difference was 0.32 points or 32%. Therefore, the student’s ability in mastering vocabulary increased 32% with experiential learning. Keywords: Teaching, Learning process, Experiential learning, Vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate Indonesian students’ self-confidence in learning as one solution for the government to improve Indonesian students’ learning outcomes. The research focused on Math because the evaluation result from Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) showed that Indonesia was in the 39th position in the world in 2007 for Math Excellence, indicating that more effort needs to be made to improve it. The government has approached this issue by improving the education quality and infrastructure; however, it is also necessary to view it from the psychological perspective, particularly from the students’ self-confidence in learning. This research was qualitative research. It used TIMSS data analyzed with Latent Class Analysis. The research sample was 4403 students of grade eight from 149 Indonesian schools. The findings showed that there are three categories of students’ self-confidence: 1) strong self-confidence (25%), 2) moderate self-confidence (55%), and 3) low self-confidence (20%). Due to a high number of students with a moderate and low level of self-confidence, it is thus advised that the government adopts the psychological approach in education, improve the competencies of teachers and supervisors, and improve teaching and learning methodologies in addition to improving infrastructure so that students’ self-confidence in learning can be increased, and the desired learning outcomes can be achieved. Despite focusing on Math, the findings of this study are also applicable to other subjects. Keywords:  Self-confidence, Self-efficacy, Latent Class Analysis.

Abstract

The aim of the research are assessment tasks to have an impact on student learning, it is critical that students have a clear perspective of the primary purpose of each task and how their responses will be interpreted and rewarded. This research method using the current terms diagnostic, formative and summative to describe many of the traditional aspects associated with current assessment prac-tice and introduces the term integrative assessment to specifically describe tasks whose primary purpose is to influence students approaches to future learning by providing activities that define and track strategies that students use to assess their own learning abilities and problem-solving capabilities, the quality and standards of student responses and how students might adapt their learning to future scenarios. The Results of the research study show integrated and integrative assessment have been used previously in the literature to describe a range of activities, including an appropriate balance between assessment for learning and assessment of learning; for various aspects of coherence and alignment between learning objectives and their associated assessment tasks; and for monitoring the efficacy of assessments in enhancing different types of learning.

Abstract

The use of video as learning media in the digital age has been prevalent. A large body of literature has shown its effectiveness in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms as it includes audio-visuals that makes the learning appealing. However, there is very limited research devoted to developing a video animation based on a local wisdom. Hence, this study aims to develop a video animation that includes local wisdom for teaching English to secondary school students. This research employed a Research and Development method which include: (1) problem analysis, (2) data collection, (3) product design, (4) validation, (5) revision, (6) product trial (7) final product revision. The data collection instruments used are validation sheets, questionnaire and observation sheet. The research subjects were 25 students at Grade VIII of SMPN 7 and SMPN 8 in Sabang City. The observation results showed a lack of multimedia used in the English learning. The validation results by media and material experts indicated that the animated video is very appropriate in terms of the design, material, and language with validation scores of 96.66%, 97.77%, and 96.36%. Meanwhile, the questionnaire results also uncovered that the animated video is favored by the students.
